Habits of the Heart

God, I do not understand that you said that David was a man after Your heart. When I look at him I say he was disobedient, a murderer, an idolater, a wife stealer, a man who didn t correct his children, and a polygamist. Yet You say he was a man after your heart?

His personal foibles would be fodder for newsprint today. I m pretty certain he could not have been electable for any office in this day and age. In fact he was run out of Office two times - no less than by two of his own children.

The scandals in his own family would certainly have seen him out of office. His son raped his sister. His other son killed the one who raped her. My, my, tsk tsk he would have been gone in a heartbeat. Every time his name was mentioned it would have been tinted with shame.

How then the contradiction? David certainly didn t appear to live a holy life. He certainly fell short of God s standards. Didn t he? But God said that he was a man after His own Heart.

Even more of a contradiction is the fact that many of David s heart cries are recorded in the Bible. Also his prayers and praises are among the most comforting phrases we read. Who has not been touched by the Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want. Who hasn t cried out with David Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will not fear for thou art with me. Who?

David confirms in my heart that man s opinions and estimates of others are not ones on which we can rely. We don t know who is or isn t great in God s eyes. In fact God tells us that all our righteousness is as filthy rags. The only perfect one is Jesus Christ.

It appears the more we are desperadoes, acknowledging our helplessness, the better off we are in the kingdom. When we rear up to present ourselves as worthy ones, righteous in some degree, we are more likely to be scorned by the very essence of Righteousness, God.

So does that mean I get to live any kind of a messy life I choose? No! The Apostle Paul makes it clear. Should I sin that Grace should abound? No there is a resounding no. If we look at David s life and family, because he refused to follow God s directions his home life was disturbing and he had no peace there.

No I really don t understand, but I think the picture is coming into view. God is to be the judge, not me. Only he can see the condition of my heart.

Yes, God sees our hearts and the hearts of others too. He knows who are those who yearn for Him deeply and hunger after Him inspite of their physical appearance and behaviours. God sees those who are after His hearts as those who will obey Him and will follow Him in the midst of all odds.

Thanks for sharing, Sister Trician

Blessings always
