Feelings and Faith by Dr. Brian Borgman |

This is a wonderful book holding the Human Emotions to the Light of God's Word. Our God is a feeling God and he has called upon us to show and feel real emotions. Many today are of the mindset that emotions should take a back seat to our Christianity and yet God calls us to be joyful and... Be Angry, but those emotions we feel are to be in proportion to scripture and need to be God-Honoring. This book is in essence, a road map to "Cultivating Godly Emotions" as the subtitle so aptly portrays. It is a must read for every Christian. Dr. Borgman is a relatively unknown author yet I believe this book is sorely needed in our culture today. It is easy to read and so much grounded in biblical truth, it will do your soul good. This book is what i would call a sleeper that is just waiting explode. Feeling are such a hot topic and need to be addressed in a biblical way. We as Christians need to know that our emotions are OK we just need to know how to deal with them Christ-Like....

Book review: The (Church) Fathers 2008 |
 |
 |
Posted by:
eschator83 (Posted: 06/06/2009 12:17pm)
The Fathers is a very enjoyable and highly readable summary of the lives and contributions of the first 10 saints designated Doctors of the Church, plus sixteen other important early Church fathers, including saints, bishops, priests and laymen. It is a useful quick reference and is fascinating in revealing views of our current Pope Benedict XVI regarding the actions and opinions of these leaders of the Church.
Beginning with Pope St Clement I dc 97, the fourth Pope, who's Letter to the Corinthians seems most likely attributable to him, although various other writings survive which also have been attributed to him, Pope Benedict's interest and sensitivity to the concerns and trials of the early Christians is apparent.
The Fathers are discussed chronologically, proceeding to St Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch dc 109, St Justin, philosopher and martyr dc 165, St Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons dc 203 and more, concluding with St Paulinus, Bishop of Nola dc430 and St Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, dc 430.
Although the book can be very quickly read, many sections are worth rereading, especially for those interested in the efforts to enunciate and reconcile the variety of views and practices which arose in different parts of the...

I am so excited about our new venture and look forward to the comments and insights that we will share with one another. Let us remember to stay prayerful at every opportunity. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and sharing mines. I recently shared my personal testimony of how God spoke to me on some of the recent struggles I encountered. As a result he led me back to a book that I have had for many years in dealing with the heart. Pastor has been speaking on the battlefield of the mind, and truly there is a connection between the heart and mind. With many messages in the New Testament that tell us that even the very elect of God can be deceived. This lets me know that it is vital that we work out our soul salvation with (reverential) fear and trembling. Let's read and discover what God has to say to us about the heart. I Love you!! CoPG...

Quilts from heaven. Parables from the patchwork of life.
By Lucinda Secrest Mc Dowell
ISBN: 0-8054-4435-1
ISBN-13:978-0-8054-4435-3
BHPublishingGroup.com
This is a delightful yet inspiring little book. As a quilt lover I have always wanted to write my own book about the patchwork of life as related to scripture and the Christian life. This author has done a wonderful job.
Grandmother's flower garden, Sunbonnet Sue, Sunshine and shadows, life is like a quilting pattern. Many older quilts are even named after verses or characters in the Bible, like Job's tears, Star of Bethlehem, and Eye of God. Some are named after the things of life like broken dishes, windmill, and log cabin.
This book is like sharing a hot cup of tea with a good friend. Beth Moore
The author intertwines the quilt blocks with stories of faith, encouragement and Bible verses. There is a little quilt history mixed with the parables.
There are 16 chapters.
Introduction, A life in pieces, Psalms 18:20
Sampler, Isaiah 61:10
Grandmother's flower garden, Jeremiah 17:7-8
Friendship quilt, John 15:14
Sunshine and shadow, Ephesians 5:8
Mariner's compass, Psalms 25:4-5
Windmill, Matthew 24:31
Log cabin, Romans 5:1-2
Eye of God, Psalms 33:13-15
Sunbonnet Sue, Luke 6:45

Let me clarify about Living in Defiance |

OK, I had a lot of questions about this book, so here's the skinny. "Living in Defiance" is currently listed at a site called bookhabit. My friend who is a librarian and book reviewer said sometimes publishers give her a sneak peak at books before they come out; they do this by putting the books on this site. They're looking for feedback and comments. You can go to bookhabit and read the first 50 pages for free or download the whole book for $2.50.
The author of the book is Heather Frey Blanton. I went to her website and read the story behind the story. One of her characters is inspired by her sister who got pregnant at the age of 15. It made me cry. The book itself is awesome and reminds me of Pride and Prejudice, and another book I read along time ago called "The Mirror."
I'm going to ask for permission to include the story in a blog....

I don't know if anyone on this site has read Christ vs. Religion by Witness Lee but I am reading it for the first time with some sisters and I can say that this is a wonderful book. Its basically a book that explains to us that difference between our dear Lord Jesus Christ and religion, that we as Christians can know all the scriptures and correct doctrines but not know the Lord at all. It gives many examples from matthew and Luke from how the pharisses were so zealous for their religious law that they missed God Himself, whom was standing right in front of their very eyes the entire time. Believe thats something that I guilty of and alot of christians as well. I am not quite done with the book yet but I can say with full assurance that its a great read because I have read other books by this same author and the revelation is awesome, and everything is backed up with the word of God so you know its not a gimic. Saints I just ask you all to open your hearts and give this book a try....

Who Broke the Baby?--Language and Manipulation |

Who Broke the Baby? -- by Jean Staker Garton
This is without a doubt the best book I have ever read about abortion. But, surprisingly, that is not the main reason it had such a powerful impact on me. Rather, it is because this book goes beyond a specific moral issue to the larger issue that lies behind every moral issue: the matter of truth.
While this book is keenly perceptive in tearing away the deceptions abortion proponents must use to ease their conscience, it is even more perceptive in its recognition of how truth itself is twisted and language misused and manipulated in an attempt to justify evil. Therefore, this book actually touches on the much larger issue of how evil deceives people and draws them away from the truth. It is for this reason that I recommend it to every person who loves the truth (Jesus), so that they will know how the enemy of truth (Satan) operates and not be deceived but rather cling ever tighter to truth.
Garton begins by stating the truth that abortion involves a semantic deception that, while effective and persuasive, lacks integrity. "The inaccurate ideas fostered by abortion rhetoric escape the notice...

Reality-by Arthur Katz:Jesus' Words Save a Soul |
 |
 |
Posted by:
wisdomsfriend (Posted: 03/20/2009 5:48am)
There was a man who felt the Spirit of God reveal the depths of his heart simply by reading a story in the Bible. I was so struck by this man's story that I want to share it with you. It shows the power of God to reach the lost across time, simply by having them read His record of what His Son did long ago.
The man's name is Arthur Katz. Some of you may be familiar with him. He tells some of his story in his book "Reality: The Hope of Glory." Katz became an atheist and hardened cynic of life. Such cynicism leads naturally to despair. In the depths of his own such crisis, Katz found himself on a Greek ship, where a little book came into his possession that previously he would have scorned to read. But the deep crisis that then consumed his soul made him desperate enough to read that little book. It was a New Testament.
As he began to read it, in his own words, "things of unspeakable profundity began to break upon my heart; what shattering exclamations came at me from the mouth of Jesus."
But, even though the Spirit of...

Weird Christians I Have Met by Philip Baker |

"Weird Christians I Have Met" by Philip Baker
I couldn't resist picking up this book to see how many weird Christians I've met. What I got was a humorous journey of self-reflection. Not only did I discover I've been quite a few of those weird Christians myself but there are probably still many shades of weirdness in me!
Written by Philip Baker who pastors the Riverview church in Perth, Australia, "Weird Christians I Have Met" is an entertaining book that can easily be consumed in one sitting. It is one of those you'd want to share with friends. I did - and we soon found ourselves pointing out traits of weirdness in each other. We "manifested"! We'd go, "Hey, that's so ‘Pamela'!" or "C'mon ‘Dave'..." or "you're being a real ‘Jill'...".
Pamela, Dave and Jill are names given to a few of the characters we meet in the book. Each character is really a caricature of a specific personality trait and Baker acquaints us with 10 of them. As we get to know each, we realise they really are quite familiar to us. They inhabit the pews in our local church. We all know: End Times Ed; Pentecostal Pamela; Theological...

While I was listening to Swindoll, he recommended a book called, "Disciplines of a Godly Man" by R. Kent Hughes. I got it and I have to say it is a very good book. It covers fatherhood, prayer life, private thoughts, work, church attendance, ect. One of the things he addresses is how we live a double life, one that is seen by people and one which only the Lord sees. As a man thinks, so he is. One of the things I have been guilty of is watching too much television. As you guys know, most of the content on TV is worldly and even wicked. So he challenges us to do without TV and to spend more time in the Word and with people developing relationships. I realize that some of his ideas will not appeal to everyone, but in this world the battle is on for our minds. We must get tough with the fleshly temptations we face and be disciplined in our walk with Jesus Christ. Satan never lets up and he knows our weakness's. If any of you have read this book I would love to discuss it with you. Grace and Peace! Stan...

Has anyone read the book "When God Writes Your Love Story?" It truly is a great book and a must read for all single Christians. Especially the middle school to high school age crowd! If you are single and looking for answers and a way to approch the dating world this is a great resource!!! It was so helpful to me that I can't express it. Do yourself a favor and read this book. It changed my life and the way that I look at relationships.
Here is a little description about the book...
"When God Writes Your Love Story challenges singles to take a fresh approach to relationships in a culture where love has been replaced by cheap and diluted sensual passion. This book shows that God's way to true love is not some dull and lifeless formula, but brings fulfillment and romance in its purest, richest, and most satisfying form."...

Too Busy Not To Pray |

danagirl (Posted: 01/07/2009 8:38am)
I have a new book recommendation for you. It's entitled "Too Busy Not to Pray" by Bill Hybels. As I've mentioned before, I don't like a lot of books that deal with prayer because I feel that they over-complicate something that should be simple. When a book tells me exactly what words I should or should not use when praying or what time of the day I should pray, I get aggravated.
All that being said, Bill Hybels book is different. He does not give a formula for prayer. Instead, he enlightens on many different aspects of prayer. For example, he deals with things that may be preventing your prayers from being answered, how to know if a prompting is your own desire or the Holy Spirit, how to keep a better focus during your prayer time, and many other lessons that I've found very helpful and informative. The main drive of the book is to help us to make prayer a priority in our lives (something I feel we all need to be reminded of once in a while).
That's all I have for today. I pray you each have a blessed day!...

It's getting very close to Christmas, and I'm sure many of you have already begun your shopping. No doubt, though, we all have someone on our list for whom we have no idea what to buy. Am I right? If so, may I suggest the newest addition to my favorite books? The title is "Welcome to the Funny Farm: The All-True Misadventures of a Woman on the Edge."
This book, written by Karen Scalf Linamen, is hilarious. She has a very unique sense of humor that will have you laughing so hard you'll cry. The book contains 50 chapters, each of which are very short, and divided in four sections which correspond with the seasons. Each chapter contains a comical story along with some great spiritual wisdom.
So, if you're looking for a good gift or if you just need some laughs to get you through this stressful season, I highly recommend this book and any of her other books. They're all great!
Happy shopping!...

The book that helped my prayer life |

I am currently on a kick where I've read more Carson books that non-Carson books over the last few months. However, A Call to Spiritual Reformation is my favorite.
Probably not because it is the best, but because before I read the book I sucked at prayer. I struggled with man's accountability in prayer and let my understanding of God's Sovereignty trump my prayer life. I blatantly disobeyed 1 Thes 5:17, because I was unable to see the point. Carson walked me through about 10 prayers by Paul and showed me what a prayer life should look like. He then rocked my world with talking through Man's Accountability and God's Sovereignty. I haven't had a single book (and the exegesis of Scripture within) make such a daily impact on my life. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants improvement in their pray life. I'm currently working on a 3 part blog of what I've learned from this book. I hope to finish it sometime before I finish my next book....

Rocky McElveen - Wild Men, Wild Alaska |

As most of you know (at least those of you who know me... which if you are reading this, you probably are, as most people do not know about this website) I have a huge passion for reading.
It started when I was 13 years old and something just "clicked" in my brain and reading went from being the dread of the world (next to cleaning my room and doing the dishes) to something that now consumes a huge part of my life.
An average month for me is 5,000 - 8,000 pages of reading. A slow month is 3,000 - 5,000 and a good month involves me reading 8,000 and 10,000 pages each month. Simply put, I enjoy reading!
Awhile back and on a whim (a whim because I rarely buy or read religious books) I picked up a book entitled 'Wild Men, Wild Alaska' written by Rocky McElveen, who owns owners of Alaskan-Adventures.
Rocky, the son of an Alaskan missionary and a seminary graduate, was raised in Alaska and knows Alaska's charm and challenges better than anyone. For over twenty years he has been a professional guide in Alaska and has guided folks like President George Bush, Sr.;...

Farley Made Me Think About... |

Posted by:
kellso (Posted: 11/11/2008 10:12pm)
I know this isn't a review about a christian book, but I highly recommend this book, because it taught me more about man than most "christian" books. Seriously. Read on, it'll show you what I mean.
I read The Chris Farley Show with a slight expectation that I would learn some application of Romans 6:1-23, but I had no idea the extent of the lessons. The book is split into 3 "Acts". Each of these acts led me to sections of Scripture and taught me...basically, where you can easily make mistakes if you live without God. I want to break that down and hope that it will lead you to Scripture and to a better understanding of your battle with sin.
Lessons from Farley in 3 Acts:
1. Sin can never be ignored
2. Solving sin with the world is scary
3. We are all Slaves
Act 1: Sin Can Never Be Ignored
Chris Farley was raised in an Irish Catholic home that had lots of money & lots of alcohol. Chris Farley's early years were wrapped up with stories about how he got out of trouble with humor or how he was enabled in his drinking, because "the whole...

100 Portraits of Christ, by Henry Gariepy
The Alpha and the Omega, First and Last, beginning and end.
100 Portraits of Christ, by Henry Gariepy, ISBN: 0-89693-340-7, published by Victor Books.
This is a book a devotional study on the many names of Christ.
It was my intent to write about these names once a week or once a month will I read through the book.
This first portrait I found to be a surprise when I found that the words Alpha and Omega were used only three times in the book of Revelation, according to the author. I found in the American Standard, it is three times. The NIV was also three times in Revelation.
The words Alpha and Omega are Greek and are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet; no they would not be in the Old Testament.
In the KJV and NKJV, it is used four times:
Revelation 1:8
Revelation 1:11
Revelation 21:6
Revelation 22:13
So I looked up the phrase first and last. In the KJV and NKJV, that wording is used in:
Isaiah 41:4
Isaiah 44:6
Isaiah 48:12
The Lord God Jehovah, the beginning and the end, the first and the last,...

I just ran across the book, Be Still by Pamela Young, on Amazon last week and ordered it. At last there's a book out that tells people that God is indeed watching us and that there are consequences for our behavior. Great read, in fact read it in one night. Wasn't sure at first if I liked the idea of God getting angry instead of being an all loving God, but in the end, it all made sense. This book has given me more hope than I've had in years. Especially love the cover. It's haunting. It's like God looking at the people of the earth from way out in space. Characters in the book are interesting. It's a very contemporary read for the times we live in. Actually, I'm in the middle of The Shack right now, and I just can't seem to get into it. Don't know why. i suppose it reminds me too much of the Celestine Prophecy....

The "Secret" is no secret to God |
 |

Posted by:
creemos (Posted: 10/25/2008 4:54pm)
The latest occult scam to capture the imagination of the West is called The Secret. The book by that name, a top New York Times bestseller, has quickly sold more than 6 million copies and the DVD over 2 million copies. Both contain numerous errors, misrepresentations, false premises, and false promises. Who cares? You should. With the following information, you could rescue someone from hell.
The numerous misrepresentations begin with the title itself. The Secret is not a secret at all, but recycled Hinduism, shamanism, and New Age folly. One of many huge lies is its claim:
"You create your own reality with your mind." This was the serpent's false promise to Eve-the promise of godhood (Gen 3:5).
Embracing that delusion cost Eve and her descendants Eden's paradise-and would have barred mankind from heaven had not Christ died for the sins of the world. In the 6,000 years since Eden, the serpent's promise has not been fulfilled in even one person's life.
Misinformation and false claims follow one another in a dizzying parade of absurdities. Sprinkled throughout the book and DVD is the claim that the Secret is scientifically proved to be true. For example, "It has been scientifically proven...

Evangelicals on the Canterbury Trail: Why Evangelicals Are Attracted to the Liturgical Church |
 |
 |
Posted by:
windhamnola (Posted: 10/18/2008 12:04pm)
I would recommend this book for anyone who seeks a greater understanding of the beginnings of the Convergence Movement, a move among some churches that blends charismatic worship with liturgies from Anglican or other liturgical traditions. For that purpose, I would consider this book a classic. Robert Webber, a former evangelical and one of the major forces behind the Convergence Movement, chronicles his journey from a tradition whose services are "man-centered" to one - that in practice - upholds "God-centered" worship. What Webber meant, I think, is that worship services in his former tradition focused mainly on the delivery of the sermon, and hence a focus on the preacher. On the other hand, worship in the "liturgical church" focuses entirely on Jesus - His life, death, and resurrection (or so Webber suggests). Webber is upfront about his bias (my words) and concedes that his own journey to a liturgical church is not one that is right for everyone. Regardless, I do think that this book can give valuable insight into the background, thoughts, and ideas that contributed to the development of a significant religious movement....

Becoming the Woman God Wants Me to Be |

I am currently going through Donna Partow's book "Becoming the Woman God Wants Me to Be: The 90-day Guide to Living the Proverbs 31 Life." It has been a real blessing and inspiration to me. Through her concise devotions, the author shows women of today how we can become the Proverbs 31 woman. The book covers the following topics: faith foundations, Godly habits, healthy eating, strengthening your body, management tools, financial planning, personal appearance, home enterprises, household management, family relationships, the ministry of the home, retirement planning, and finishing strong. Each day's devotion is complete with Scripture memorization, Scripture reading, a short but informational devotional, a prayer, and practical ways to apply the day's lesson. With the many topics included in this book, it's like having several books in one. I am only on Day 26, but I've already learned so much. I've laughed and cried as I've read through the lessons, trying to pattern my life after the virtuous woman. If you've ever wondered how the Proverbs 31 woman was able to get so much done, this book's for you. I've resolved to follow this journey through to the end, though I must admit that some of the lessons...

So this is my first blog, and im glad it is!!! Few months ago I read a book called 90 Minutes In Heaven byDon Piper!!!! I was so excited when I started to read this. I didnt know what it really it was about, but i heard it had a very good rating. If you havent read this book. I really recommend you reading it was only $13 dollars at Barnes & Noble. It will show you how heaven is going to be when we leave this world. It also shows that when we leave this place that God is going to be near us. I personally didnt think there was a Heaven, but when i read the whole book. I realize that Heaven is a whole new world. He mention that the streets are filled with gold, there is no violence, and we live in a perfect world where everyone loves each other. When I die I want to leave this world as he mention it is. I cant wait till the day when I meet Jesus that will be a dream come true!!!!...

I've read C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity" a number of years ago, but I recently reread the book, cover-to-cover. The words seemed as fresh and relevant to me now, as it did back then. The book is written in a conversational style as its topics were originally broadcast as "talks" over radio to a war-torn England during WWII. Lewis' words provided comfort, and strengthened the faith of those whose lives were uncertain in the midst of calamity. Among other things, Lewis was a 20th century Christian apologist - one who uses reason to argue in defense of the Christian faith. Topics covered in "Mere Christianity" include: The Cardinal virtues, Theological virtues, Christian marriage, sexual morality, and the doctrine of the Trinity. Another section of his book entitled "Time and Beyond Time" attempts to explain the timelessness of God, and that our notion of time as a sequence of passing moments does not apply to Him. Lewis himself admits that some topics covered in his book may not be helpful to all readers. For those that are not helpful Lewis humbly suggests that readers simply skip that section and move on to another topic in the book. I do think, however, that...

hi!! it me!! (even though you won't necessarilly know who 'me' is. . . ) ah well.
i am writing in a review of ted dekker's works in general. i've read quite a few of his books (actually i'm working on one of them right now) and i was wondering whether any of you thought his works are biblical or non-biblical or whatever.
personnally, i know that for me i really like some of his work (the ones i have read) and while others i didn't really enjoy as much. the circle triology, black, red, and white, i absulutely loved. its about a guy named thomas who hits his head and wakes up in an alternate reality. related to that are the books skin (in which the bad guy was utterly gruesome but in the end gave a good message) and House (which is vey creepy, but also just as good, and i advise you not to read it at night) lol
adam was his scariest novel to date. its about demon possession and a psychotic killer and i'd advise to read during the day. (to bad i can't follow my own advise)
project showdown series was good. starting with...

Positive Thinking |

I just read Jon Gordon's book, "The Energy Bus: 10 Rules to Fuel your Life, Work, and Team with Positive Energy," and it was just fantastic. He uses a lot of Biblical principles in his books to illustrate a message. Jon's biggest rule is to: love your passengers. Love them and show your compassion to them so the team can move in the right direction. Jon was inspired by a Denver bus driver who said, "I love life, I love you, and I love God." I've heard the book is being read all over the world by moms, dads, business people, pastors, everyone! I heard him speak, and he says it came from Jesus Christ. He wrote the book with God's help in less than a month, and it became an international best seller. Jon is a very spiritual man and loves Jesus dearly. I think he just came out with a new book called, "The No Complaining Rule"- might be work checking out. Many blessings....

7 Strategies to "Total Forgiveness" |
 |
 |
Posted by:
fully4given (Posted: 07/03/2008 5:38am)
I have never to been one to ask for forgiveness, I usually just say "sorry". It wasn't until about a year ago God put me to the test! I thank God daily for the time of tribulation in my life, because of that I can walk closer to him. Let me share with you a book that I have been reading and the key elements from that book. It is a book by R. T. Kendall and it taught me a lot about what forgiveness is and what it isn't.
7 Strategies to Total Forgiveness:
1. Don't tell anyone what the person that needs forgiveness did, control your tongue (Don't Gossip)! How hard is this, very. We sometimes want a "pity party" and we want others to sympathise with us. Only for therapeutic reasons should you disclose any information.
2. Don't allow them to feel intimidated by you. You don't want to dangle what ever the issue is over their head, they probably feel bad enough as it is.
3. Don't allow them to feel guilty. Remember Total Forgiveness is about letting it go, don't hover on the issue and throw it up in their face at every opportune time....

I've been reading the Left Behind book series and I find it very interesting... Its about the end of times and explains what will happen in a real life story! I think it would be a good read to anyone who is curious. It also helps answer alot of questions about the book of revoluation. I know these books have been out a while and maybe old news but i just thought that i would inform people just in case someone doesnt know about them. There is 12 books in the series, I've read 1-9 but stopped for a while, but i recently started over and I can not pull myself away from these books. They also have a book series for children. If you are interested and don't already know about this the arthurs names are Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. Hope you enjoy reading. They are kinda expensive..well to me they are but the price usually is around 12-15 dollars...

Why God is crying |

This blog is not about a Christian book, but there was no secular book category so here we go...
I heard a few minutes of an interview with Deepak Chopra concerning his book Why God is Laughing: The Path to Joy and Spiritual Optimism.
I am not going to pretend to have read the book, but Deepak did give a synopsis of what conclusion the book is meant to bring the reader to and I feel it is worthy of mention.
Essentially, Deepak stated that all of life consists of opposites. Truth only exists because of lies, good only exists because of bad, right because of wrong, etc... Deepak feels that when a person realizes that their existence is completely dependent upon that of their "enemies" or opposites, they will be able to be less judgmental of others and live a life of peace.
I see a great irony in this, especially because Deepak mentions God in the title of His book. In the kind of world that Deepak mentions what kind of role would God play? Although it is a valid observation to conclude that life consists of many opposites, this is not universal. Truth and good are not...

Golf Book |

I read a golf novel a year ago with my husband and son (both golfers) called Golf's Sacred Journey by Dr. David Cook. It's an amazing story about a golfer who "loses it" at a qualifying tournament and ends up in Utopia, Texas where his life is transformed. It's a really quick read and has so many lessons for life (nuggets) that we've re-read it several times. Its a book that inspires the "older and wiser" generation to take time to share their wisdom with the younger crowd and a book about being willing to learn. It's twelve chapters, with the story building to the end. I won't steal the ending, but you come up surprised. My husband and son love it and I loved the story--even though I'm not really a golfer. I'd highly recommend it for all who have come close to a dream, only to come up short. It provides wisdom for golf AND life and leads you to directly to THE Book!...

The Thirteenth Apostle by April D. DeConick - Gospel of Judas |

The Thirteenth Apostle
{note: not a Christian book but still a review of a book}
When I first heard National Geographic had a show airing about the Gospel of Judas I have followed this story. So much activity started up a few days after this airing it made me hold off writing anything about it. Two reasons, one: it is Gnostic, something we do not discuss here, hardly, at all and two: translation controversy from Prof. DeConick arose almost immediately.
The book The Thirteenth Apostle is a critical writing of the translation presented by National Geographic and the three people hired that did the translation.
Whose names are:
Marvin Meyer - a professor of religious studies at Chapman University,
Gregor Wurst, a professor of ecclesiastical history and patristics at the University of Augsburg, in Germany,
Bart Ehrman, a professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The author of The Thirteenth Apostle is April D. DeConick a professor of biblical studies at Rice University. She also wrote - Original Gospel of Thomas in Translation.
The TV show, CD and book describe Judas as a hero; below I show Dr. DeConicks problems with some of the...

Two Christian Martyrs and the Facade |

papillionkiller (Posted: 06/01/2008 8:38pm)
In preparing to share a book, I came across an article in the May/June 2008 Archaeology Magazine written by Samir S. Patel of an interesting find in 2001.
In Romania on the Danube River archaeologist have been unearthing old Roman forts and on the western most fort along the river Mihail Zahariade found a late - Roman Basilica; inside a partial fresco still surviving with some writing and a name on it, Astion, along with two skeletons without the skulls.
The importance of this in Christendom is, during the Renaissance a text was discovered describing the trial of Astion and Epictetus. The commander declared them traitors for preaching and healings. They were tortured and beheaded on July 8 290 a.d. Because these two names do not appear in any other text the religious scholars dismissed this text of two Christian martyrs.
Now Zahariade has a site, everyone agrees, with proof of these two early Christians and their story. The skeletons have signs of torture and one has cut marks on the cervical vertebrae.
The text of their trial is part of the Acts of Saints and recognized by scholars today.
I failed to fine the story on Archaeology.org but I...

Eastern and Western Christianity |

windhamnola (Posted: 05/26/2008 12:09pm)
In his book "The Orthodox Church," Timothy Ware (Bishop Kallistos) presents a good concise history of Eastern Orthodoxy, as well as a balanced view of the the Great Schism. Timothy's sentiments go beyond a mere intellectual appeal for Christian unity and suggest that we have both, East and West, been "grievously impoverished" by our separation. As he states (p.61),"The Greek east and the Latin west still need one another. For both parties the Great Schism has proved to be a great tragedy." Bishop Kallistos further explains that the Protestant reformation emanated from the Western church, chiefly Rome, and did not affect the East (Constantinople). I would recommend this book for anyone who seeks a greater understanding of historic Christianity, and to gain an appreciation for the role of tradition in transmitting sacred truths. One example is the role of the early ecumenical councils in clarifying the doctrine of the trinity, as well as shedding light on the Orthodox view of apostolic collegiality....

Lauren Holbrook Series |

I just read an amazing trilogy call the Lauren Holbrook Series. Miss Match, ReMatch, and Match Point are written by Erynn Mangum and have an FANTASTIC point of view in first person. Lauren Holbrook is bored with her life; the repetition/predictability of her daily routine is driving her to insanity! To add some unpredictability, she starts matchmaking. In Miss Match, her victims...errr... couples to match are Lexi and Nate and Nick and Ruby. ReMatch includes the cast of Shawn and Hallie and Hannah and Brandon. In Match Point, the final installment, the tables are turned and her friends are matching HER!! Will Cupid's arrow find it's mark? I genuinely enjoyed Erynn's series because I am a wee bit of a matchmaker of sorts as well. But even if you don't enjoy giving someone an extra shove... I mean nudge in the right direction to find their significant other, I guarantee you will LOVE these books. Filled with witty dialogue, unpredictability, and an ever-present salvation message, this book is a must read!...

I just read Current Events, Conservative Outcomes; Predictions for America's Future by GA Freiman. The book was a breath of fresh air. For those of you who are looking for understanding in how God interacts in our daily lives, I think this book is the best I have seen. Freiman approaches all the current events that are politically incorrect to discuss from a perspective that is very Christian. I must warn you Freiman is a little more than the typical writer. He writes on each topic only after doing a meditation on each topic that seems to be like a Edgar Cayce psychic viewing. I was fascinated by how Freiman tells his readers what he sees in his vision and how he became much closer to God by writing on these topics. Freiman finds his visions always take him back to Biblical teachings and he has a rock solid Christian faith due to his ability to touch the other side. Freiman even recomends courses of action after he explains the topic at hand and always from the perspective that he feels will help America be more successful and conservative. I bought this book looking precictions for America and got much...

Stories behind women of extraordinary faith, a personal review.
Let their walk with Christ inspire yours.
When I bought this book, I thought it was related to the Bible study I have been doing on extraordinary women of the Bible. It is not. It is about women who followed Christ in our times. Some are names I have heard before, but many are just women like me.
Each time I would read about one woman I would think she is my favorite. Then I would read the next and again think she's the great. There are twenty (20) short renderings about women who lived their life following Christ.
These are just short biographical snippets about their lives, a very short overview type. It is very well written and easy to read. Some will be familiar names, like Frances Jane Crosby, hymn writer, Harriet Tubman, freedom fighter and Mother Teresa. Many of the others were new to me like Anne Hutchinson a pioneer, Daisy Low, founder of the girl scouts and Dr. Ann Brooks.
The other women covered in this book are, Catherine Booth, Catherine Hicks, Margaret Smith, Laurie Prange, Helen Cornelius, Sarah Clarke, Reba Smith, Lottie Moon, Kay Yow, Sophie...

9 Marks of a Healthy Church |

joyvenning (Posted: 05/07/2008 5:30pm)
Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone has read Mark Dever's 'Nine Marks of a Healthy Church'.
If you have, what did you think of it? Did you like it? What was edifying about it? Did you think it was lacking? In what ways? Would you reccommend this book for others to read? Why?
Did it conflict with your previous beliefs? Did it challenge you? Did it make you reconsider the way your Church was focussing its energy?
I thought Mark's book was really beneficial. I was genuinely surprised by some of the marks he included, but he was correct in pointing out that the one's he chose have often been neglected in Churches today. I liked his preaching-like style, and I thought that made the book simple and engaging to the reader.
But enough about me! I want to know what you thought of it!
Please share your thoughts!
Thank you and God bless
Joy...

12th: Left Behind |

One time when our youth service was cancelled, my brother suggested that we go to a bookstore just a floor away from our church. As I browsed the shelves for some interesting read, I crossed ways with this pocketbook titled Left Behind: The Kids 4 - Facing the Future.
I knew sometime before that Left Behind was a series telling about the Rapture and the stuff you see in the book of Revelation. Since I had this interest with everything regarding the end times, I never hesitated to buy the book. And yes, it never failed to capture my heart.
It was about four teens left behind after the Rapture of the Church. They were under care of a pastor who explained to them all that had happened and everything that would take place - Jesus Christ had come back to "snatch away" His Church, the Antichrist has already come and seven years of Tribulation was about to follow. They were on a quest of knowing who the Antichrist is, while having an opportunity to tell others - who were also left behind but didn't accept Christ yet - about Jesus and His salvation. Later on, a journalist tells of...

Kindle Review: Bible, New American Standard Bible |

christiankindler (Posted: 04/13/2008 4:55am)
(For those of you unfamiliar with the Amazon Kindle please check it out at this page)
Introduction:
I figured the best place to start my reviews of the Amazon Kindle Christian related content would be with the Bible itself.
It is probably going to be easy to write most of the future reviews on Christian Books, but writing reviews for different Bibles is always hard - and with some many different translations, it becomes even harder.
For that reason I am going to not focus so much on "translations" as I will the usablity of some of the different available Bibles presently available at Amazon.Com, when placed on the Kindle.
Most Popular Translations:
At the time of this writing there are most of the major translations available.
The top five that are of worth quality are:
New American Standard Bible (NASB) -- This is presently the most popular Bible available, and for justifiable reasons that I'll share later. Presently priced at $6.99
King James Version (KJV) -- The second most popular Bible available, with a lot of reviews, but it does have it's flaws as many reviewers note. Presently priced at $2.39
New International Version (NIV) -- The third most...

review of the Anne Rice book, Christ the Lord |

mkmills (Posted: 04/11/2008 8:50am)
Hello Everyone,
I am an avid reader. You'll hardly ever find me not reading something. Much of what I read is Christian literature, generally non-fiction including stories about true life experiences of missionaries, such as, End of the Spear, by Steve Saint. Currently I'm re-reading C.S. Lewis', The Problem of Pain, which is an incredible essay on how we as Christians should view the purpose of pain in our lives. That having been said, I dearly love a good fiction tale that touches my heart. Such stories often encourage us to seek to know our Lord more fully.
It saddens me, therefore, to say that I find many books in the Christian fiction genre disappointing. This appears to happen, in part, because the authors seem more focused on sharing the Good News of Christ or making a theological point rather than the story itself. Now there's certainly nothing wrong about wanting to share Spiritual Truth. But a story needs to be crafted and conveyed in such a way as to draw the reader in, encouraging them to actually care about the characters of the story.
In my opinion the Left Behind series is an example of Christian story-telling that lacked...

ALMOST MISSED
by Peter Skinner
By way of contrast, successful missionary work without public support or fame drives, Walking Man: A Modern Missions Experience in Latin America, by Narciso Zamora (The Quilldriver, 192 pages, softcover, $12.95, 978-0-9791639-0-6). Born into a desperately poor rural family, Zamora fled to a life of casual labor, minor larceny, and the hope of salvation. Rescued by a Christian family, he found Christ and then a seminary. He graduated and began work for a small evangelical group. Dismissed for a disciplinary offense, he became a solo missionary and medico in remote areas of Peru, Ecuador and Chile, preaching to all and founding small churches. His work meant endless horrific journeys - usually on foot. The story transcends the telling: Zamora's true gift is instilling hope, conferring dignity, and building communities among the downtrodden, the neglected, and the unserved - work in which his beloved wife, fighting a debilitating kidney disease, is a dedicated partner. Zamora confirms that true faith can lead to heroic adventure, and an unheralded mission can be a life-enhancing force....

Vanity-meaningless, now I'm confused! A Bible study. |

kraftykatz (Posted: 03/07/2008 11:28am)
Vanity, meaningless now I am confused!
In a study I am working on by myself, these two words came up. The first week study is on Eve.
The book is,
Women of the Bible, a one-year devotional study of women in scripture, by Ann Spangler & Jean E. Syswerda.
The question from the book:
Eve now has two sons. Cain's name is Hebrew for ‘brought forth," while Abel's name means "breath" or "temporary" or "meaningless." It is the same Hebrew word that is used in Ecclesiastes 1:2. Certainly Abel's life was not meaningless, but it was short, and his name suggests what was to come. Compare Abel's name here and the verse in Ecclesiastes. What connection can you see between the two?
Ecclesiastes 1:2, NKJV
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
Where is the word meaningless? I was using my NKJV Bible.
Ecclesiastes 1:2, NIV
"Meaningless! Meaningless!" Says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless."
Webster's collegiate thesaurus;
Vanity: amour proper, conceitedness, narcissism, self-conceit, self-esteem, self-love, vainglory, vainness.
Meaningless: senseless, insignificant, pointless, purportless, unmeaning: feckless, fustian, good-for-nothing, purposeless, unpurposed, useless, worthless.
Breath: dash, shade, soupcon, streak, suggestion, suspicion, touch, trace, whiff.
Temporary: lasting, continuing,...

WHAT IS PROMISED TO ME WHEN I READ THE BIBLE. |

Posted by:
paprika89 (Posted: 03/06/2008 3:56pm)
For many years I have met Christians that seem pretty strong in faith, but don't read the Bible. They think they are better off without it. But I've seen that when the enemy attacks them; they fall flat on their face. Here are 7 ways and reasons why we should read the Bible. Very simple and the best book review I have given yet. I didn't put the scriptures in full because some of us like different Bible versions, which is okay. Be blessed and don't forget to read the Bible
1) Sustains us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
It balances us. It brings us satisfaction in life, and lasting
joy.
Check out Jeremiah 15:16
2) Reading the bible tells us how to be set free from sin.
Check out John 8:32
3) Reading the Bible helps us keep a right attitude towards God
and others.
Check out Deuteronomy 17:19-20
4) Reading the Bible helps us know how to keep pure.
Check out Psalm 119:9--24
and Proverbs 6:22
5) Reading the Bible guides us in daily living,
giving us the best counsel for our problems.
Check out Psalm 119:19, 119:105 as well.
6) Reading the Bible gives us hope for...

The New Pilgrim's Progress |

The New Pilgrim's Progress
John Bunyon's classic revised for today with notes by Warren W. Wiersbe, published by Discovery House Publishers, 1989, ISBN 0-929239-13-X.
John Bunyon wrote the original in 1678 and over 20,000 million copies are said to be in print.
The title is somewhat misleading, as the main story has not been changed. I have read many new versions where the story was changed from the original. This book tells the story of Christian's journey to the celestial city. It does not continue on with the second part of the book, Christina follows Christian, which is the story about her journey with the children. I first read this back in 1999. The story is always worth reading a second time.
I never understood the archaic language, symbols, and allusions in the original story. It is written in the old King James English. It is also good to have a KJV Bible available, as there are many references to verses that one should look up. With the study notes and references provided by Wiersbe, I understood and enjoyed this wonderful classic. I then found a copy of The Pilgrim's Progress by Bunyon and read it. I actually understood and...

Book Review of "Revolution" by George Barna |
 |
 |
Posted by:
john49 (Posted: 01/20/2008 8:45pm)
George Barna is one of today's most influential Christian leaders. His book "Revolution" is a report of over twenty years of data collection and analysis on the status of Christian churches and followers of Jesus Christ. The book unveils what Barna describes as a "paradigm shift in the way a person views and interacts with his or her world." The treatment is uplifting in its characterization of the "Revolutionary" although it is sure to precipitate anger on the part of many clergy within the walls of the "local church."
The book begins with David and Michael, two fictional characters having a conversation during a round of golf. The duo grew disenchanted with their churches and left, meeting in what they call "Church on the Green." Barna's fictional characters portray "born-again believers" who have left the local church for other pursuits that satisfy what is missing in the Sunday worship experience. David, the "Revolutionary," leads a life that "reflects the very ideals and principles that characterized the life and purpose of Jesus Christ." Whereas Michael represents a category popularly called "backsliding Christians" - "believers who (are) losing touch with God, the Bible, the community of faith, and (their) spiritual responsibilities." Both...

Knitting fashions of the 1940s
Category: Fashion, Style, Shopping
This book is great!!! it gives a bit of history on fashion in the 1940s + life, along with a couple of knitting patterns one can try out there are also photographs of the knit your self items and colored modern photos of the same items, too.
I have been looking all over for a knitted snood pattern I could not find the right free pattern anywhere ones I did manage to find call them snoods when all it really is is a bun cover who wants that not I, so I will let you kow how to knit your very own true to the letter 1940s hair snood, so get out those knitting needles...the pattern calls for ribbon yarn yet the original snoods were made with ch-neil yarn in white, yellow, and black. You will need 5mm needles cast on 30sts and knit 3 rows. 4th row: knit, but pull out each stich to about 2.5cm (1in) in length. Rep these 4 rows 12 more times, then Knit 2 rows. Cast off tightly but do not cut yarn. Now pick up and knit 26sts down side( one in end of...

23 Minutes in Hell-One man's story about what he saw, heard, and felt in that place of torment |

23 MINUTES
I would like to share with you a book I am reading. It is called '23 Minutes in hell' by Bill Wiese, published by Charisma House. One man's story about what he saw, heard, and felt in that place of torment.
ISBN-13:978-1-59185-882-9
I saw a video interview with the author on the 700 Club, September 6. I also found the information on a web search. I purchased the book this weekend at my local store. I do not know or understand how to add the link to the video or CBN.com. CBN has a video library and you can find the interview there, just put in the title of the book in video search. It can also be found by searching the web as I did.
The author did not have a near death experience. He says it was a vision; an out of body experience, that God took him to hell. I was hoping others would read this book as I am, and share their thoughts.
At the end of the interview, Pat Robertson makes the observation that preachers now preach a feel good God, a loving, forgiving God. We do have a loving and forgiving God....

More on Where We Got the Bible |

catholicchristian (Posted: 08/30/2007 10:13am)
Ok, so I'm in the process of reading the book: WHERE WE GOT THE BIBLE by Rev. Henry G. Graham and I find the entire book online! http://www.geocities.com/militantis/biblecontents.html#introduction
I already knew some of the history surrounding the Church who finalized the canon of the Bible, but this book goes into more detail about the Church at that time. It also dispells some myths and addresses the beliefs of the Church during the councils that led up to the final canon.
For those Christian history buffs like myself, this is a quick read and one that will educate you on some of the historical aspects that surround the Church.
Christians venerate the Bible as sacred Scripture, but many do not know where it came from, how it came to be, has it been tampered with, if so, in what way? I felt a while ago I needed to know the roots of my faith. One way was learning about the Church that brought me my Bible. There are other ways, but I thought I'd share this one with the bloggers as a way of sharing information with those who are also looking for the same information.
In Christ...

Just walk with me... |

heartlanddoulos (Posted: 08/29/2007 5:26am)
I have been a pastor off and on for several years. I am not pastoring currently, but I do serve in a large church in Suburban Kansas City. In this church I teach a small group of those who serve in the Worship Arts ministry of our church. This past summer, I lead them through one of the newest books written by Willow Creek Community Church pastor, Bill Hybles. "Just a Walk Across the Room: Simple Steps Pointing People to Faith" is a book that should be mandatory reading for everyone who professes to be a follower of Jesus Christ.
In this book, Hybels calls all of us to move outside our comfort zones, outside of our cloistered halls of our churches and the relatively "safe" relationships of our Christian friends and "Just a Walk Across the Room" to engage with someone who is far from God. Certainly a commission-obeying endeavor for anyone who claims to be a follower of Jesus....

IF you want make a difference... |

heartlanddoulos (Posted: 08/26/2007 5:03pm)
One of my favorite authors is Bill Hybels. I have read several of his books and I am beginning "Holy Discontent: Fueling the Fire That Ignites Personal Vision". Bill Hybels is one of my true Christian Heroes. He has a burden to equip leaders and since I have had a variety of leadership responsibilities in the local church his rich insights are especially appreciated. Below is a review for his book: "Courageous Leadership"
IF you want make a difference... then read this book!
Bill Hybels is a mentor of mentors. He has and is paying his dues. The thousands of lives who have been eternally changed because of his commitment to the Body of Christ is reason enough to give him your undivided attention. But Hybels has also written other books to recommend his expertise in building into the lives of others.
Hybels does not sugar coat anything. If you are looking for an easy job as a leader, especially as a church leader then Courageous Leadership might not be what you are looking for in a book on leadership. If on the other hand you are willing to think outside of the box, gladly give of yourself, not care...

Earthquake in Peru Unites the Americas |

I've been in Peru since June and I go back to Chile September 15th. Currently I'm working in this area laying the foundation for the work my wife and I will start next year with the opening of the new Inter-American Missiology and Theology Ministerial Bible School.
There aren't any ministers who belong to the Church of God in this area and there are numerous towns and communities that don't have churches. There's a need to start working in these places.
I want to ask for your prayers and let everyone know about the natural disaster that occurred in the south of Peru. In January of this year, my wife and I visited the cities of Ica, Pisco and Chincha to plan for future churches in the area. These are impoverished places and we need your prayers for the victims.
The earthquake happened last Wednesday night. It was pretty strong, 7.8 on the Richter scale. All Peru cried when they witnessed the disaster; two streets in Pisco were left full of dead bodies. It was a terrible wake up call that God sent to Peru in order for people to repent. A Catholic church was celebrating mass when the earthquake...

maranantha (Posted: 08/16/2007 2:55pm)
If you have struggled with the question should a Christian seek to obtain riches, this book is for you. It will answer your questions from a Biblical perspective. It will lead you to understand the Kingdom and why and how to seek it. What you should do with what God blesses you with. It will cause you to re-think what is usually taught, that it is wrong for a Christian to have or seek riches.
There are many needs in the world. The poor can not help the poor financially or materially. John Wesley said that a Christian should work hard, earn all he can then give it away. What are you doing to meet the needs of others? Do you have a concern for those that are less fortunate than you? God's Word tells us we should consider the poor.
Check it out and see if you are challenged to have a different outlook on money and its use....

C.S. Lewis on Disputed Matters |

masterchief (Posted: 08/16/2007 3:12am)
I am currently reading "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis and want to comment on some of the things he says. I had never read C.S. Lewis before but have found him to be an incredible writer gifted with the ability to "turn a phrase" and in the manner of Rick Warren, to impart great truths so that even (and especially) a layman may grasp what is important. I decided to take notes and make comments as I read and have managed eight pages of notes and comments on the Preface alone.
The whole purpose of the Preface is to set the stage for what Lewis hopes to accomplish with this book. He avoids denominational tags even though he is a member of the Church of England. His entire purpose as he puts it is "to explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times." A fairly tall order if you ask me. On page IX of the Preface Lewis writes about his silence on disputed matters as he has received criticism from readers who think he is glossing over or avoiding important matters. His opinion (and that of Rick Warren decades later) is...

Withstanding the Storm |

allforhim (Posted: 07/11/2007 9:28am)
Okay, I just wanted to share this little gem of a book with y'all. It is written by CB member Goodnews. This book is a very easy read but really goes straight to the heart of matters that affect our spiritual walk. It helps you move past being an ineffective Christian by building your foundation on the Rock. Storms do come, plenty of them as we walk the narrow path, some storms are stronger than others and his suggestions in this book help you to build your faith so that even the greatest of storms won't knock you down. I truly believe that we, Christians, in America will soon be facing tough times, times of real persecution. Will we be able to look someone in the face and say "Yes, I am a Christian." even when it means, jail, torture, or death? We all wonder what we will do and this book helps to give you that firm foundation and the walls you need to build to protect you. So that you can stand before the Lord and hear the words, we all so long to hear,"Well done, good and faithful servant." If you are looking for something to help...

BOOKS AND BOOKS |

ily101 (Posted: 05/31/2007 1:49pm)
I'm reading Nabokov's "Lolita" now...a little disturbing after the other books I wrote about, but it's a book club selection (actually, it was "Reading Lolita in Tehran" and we branched into the actual "Lolita" book).
RLIT is about Iranian women who feel they've become irrelevant in their culture...except when they get together in a small apt. to read forbidden Western literature, beginning with Nabokov. "Pride & Prejudice" is my next read...also from RLIT...if I can make it through "Lolita" in one piece. It's difficult to read a book like that and then the Bible. Madness and peace. They have nothing in common!
Does anybody have any good book suggestions, not necessarily Christian but maybe classics that they could recommend? I'm up for classics or anything that would be good for discussion.
By the way if anyone is interested in reading a Christian book for discussion on this site, please let me know. I could suggest one...if if anyone else has any ideas. Share....

Where did sin come from? |

Posted by:
kennethwhicker (Posted: 05/24/2007 8:42pm)
I was reading a book entitled "Spirit Warriors" that make a statement that "Satan was the originator of sin." I am not sure this is correct. The authors text to back this up was 1st John 3:8. This just simply says that Satan has been sinning since the beginning of time. Also that if you sin then you are serving Satan. Not that he is the originator. So who is it? Did God create evil or Satan? Was evil always there? Why there be good if evil didn't exsist? I know there is evil and I know what I believe but I am interesting in finding out others thoughts on this issue? This is just a interesting question that I was pondering? I hope to get many responses. Please expound show references for your responses. I will try to reply to your comments in my next blog. Thanks so much....

TRAINING YOUR EMOTIONS - Helping Women of Faith Overcome Emotional Strongholds
Do your kids get you so tied up in knots you are ready to cry? Maybe your micromanaging boss antagonizes you to the boiling point of utter enragement. Perhaps you have had a day of hurry-up-and-wait scenarios sending you into a whirlwind of anxiety the rest of the day. You want to display better emotional responses, but you just can't seem to change your behavior.
Why aren't we able to simply say, "I'm a Christian" and be able to easily discontinue unhealthy emotional responses like anger, depression, and impatience? The Bible tells us these behaviors are wrong, yet we exercise these habits on a daily basis. Like an amateur bodybuilder who works the wrong muscle groups, we over-exercise our negative emotions. It's time to start a new training program designed by the Ultimate Personal Trainer of All Time - Jesus Christ.
You already know an expert body builder does not get strong overnight. Gaining strength and endurance takes time, repetition, and perseverance. The mind is similar to the body: the thought processes and behaviors can also adapt with the right exposure, stress, and repetition. By utilizing the strength of...

Book Review: Highways And Hedges |

I recently came across this book, Highways And Hedges, that I heard about from a friend of a friend. I must admit, I'm not a fan of poetry. When I was in school, we had to study poems, and a lot of them were boring and hard to understand. Highways And Hedges is an exception. When I started reading, I knew I had found something worth my time. A lot of the poems read like songs: they're not too complex to understand. Most of them are very down-to-earth, but all are strong in imagery. The author created all of the art himself and included it in the book. Very talented. I'm not sure if he drew them himself or made them on the computer. Regardless, I liked them. I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. The author's website is also very interesting, very artsy like. Check it out. http://www.adamherringpoetry.com...

The Seven Storey Mountain |
 |
 |
Posted by:
clayonmyeyes (Posted: 02/07/2007 9:39am)
Thomas Merton is one of the best known and influential Christian/Catholic authors of the twentieth-century. The Seven Storey Mountain is his autobiography. The book relays the story of the author's religious conversion and eventual entrance into a Trappist monastery in Kentucky. Along the way there are enlightening reflections about society, history and faith. The work has rightly earned its place as a classic. A particular scene struck me most profoundly. (WARNING: book detail spoiler ahead!)
After entering the monastery, Merton's brother simultaneously begins service in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. One day Merton is called to the Abbot's office and he knows intuitively that it is news about his brother. He passes a pieta (statue of Mary holding the dead body of Jesus) and amongst all his anxiety he states, " buried my will and my natural affections and all the rest in the wounded side of the dead Christ." He then receives the news that his brother was killed in action.
That image blew me away - so graphic and intense. How many times do I need to bury my will and natural affections in the wound of Christ? How many times do I need to bury...

The Imitation of Christ |

popparick (Posted: 01/27/2007 9:53am)
I would like to recommend the book titled "The Imitation of Christ". This book is probably as close to the bible as you can get but it is written in a way that is much easier to read and understand. Please do not think I am an expert on the bible or religion. I am only a simple man who craves christian knowledge and I have read many, many books over the years. This book, among many, stands out. The passages, prayers, and text brings the reader to a place of solitude with Christ. It allows the reader to meditate on what he/she has read. I recommend you read small sections, maybe a page at a time, before you turn the light off to go to sleep. Then meditate as you lay in bed. You will fall asleep inspired with the words of Christ. The book is broken up into four parts or four books. Book One is "Advice Useful for a Spiritual Life, Book Two is Advice about Internal Things, Book Three is Internal Consolation, and Book Four is Exhortation to Receive Holy Communion. I did not enjoy book four maybe because it appears to be directed more to...

Book Review: Your Pal, Steve |
 |
 |
Posted by:
dmckenna (Posted: 01/23/2007 9:38pm)
Your Pal, Steve, written by Steve Peifer, published in 2006, is a compilation of e-mails that spans a five year period of time, telling the story of Steve and his family's journey from Texas to Kijabe, Kenya. They begin working at a school for children of missionaries, but as time goes on they develop a food program and computer program for the children of Kenya. The e-mails chronicle their new life in Kenya, the wonderful friendships, the sad realities of daily life for the poor people of Kenya, the need for food, education. Steve's e-mails are at once educational regarding life in Kenya, humorous as he tells of his travels, struggles with language, encounters with the wildlife of Kenya, and then very emotional as he shares his encounters with the poorest of the poor children in the schools and churches of Kenya, tells of the cost of feeding children one school at a time, or how the computer program is slowly but surely growing. You will be blessed for reading the book. It is a very moving, very readable book. Steve's words are very down to earth, written to his friends, his church members, fellow Christians -- sharing his love...

My All Star Team |

Get a mentor. If you can't get a mentor, read a book.
--John C. Maxwell
I wish to start this thought with a totally artificial situation. Let us pretend that a person has just become a Christian. Recognizing that, in reality, a large portion of how we grow in faith comes through a)interaction with other believers (fellowship), b) the guidance of the Holy Spirit in one's spirit, which we sometimes learn by our response, and sometimes learn by our ignoring and learning the hard way, c)through worship, and d) through personal Bible study and hearing the preaching of the Word via believers who communicate not just by words but by their lives, let me take the idea that, if spiritual growth could be communicated by reading books that teach Biblical principles (which it can, in part, when our spirit is ready to accept it), what would be a short list of written resources which would communicate the maximum amount of such teaching. This would be what I might term "the All-Star Team" of Christian literature.
Having said that, I might say that, being an imperfect person, and a person who hasn't read everything (just like you, too), this list is...

Book review: The Abandoned Generation: Rethinking Higher Education |

Posted by:
tevyebird (Posted: 01/22/2007 6:31pm)
The Abandoned Generation: Rethinking Higher Education by William H Willmon and Thomas H Naylor (Eerdmans, 1995)
This book defines the problems of the secular (public and private) liberal arts colleges and universities, and, at the end, proposes solutions. This book is something of a think tank report on the subject. Albeit produced by Eerdmans, it reflects a Christian world view between the lines, as it is aimed at academics. Basicly, if you are not an educational administrator, you probably wouldn't read this book, and the authors weren't expecting you
to. For the non-acedemic, the synopsis below is the most important ideas to extract from this work. There are a few obscenities in the form of quotes from students reflecting points of view about the problems discussed.
How is this book applicable to the average Christian? I have heard a phrase, to be a Christian is to pursue what it is to be truly human. The secular university campus is one of the weaker links in the church's mission to be salt and light in a lost and dying world, in that, to a degree greater than in much of this culture, the campus is geared towards facing questions head-on, at...

book review: Neither Poverty Nor Riches by Craig Blomberg |
 |
 |
Posted by:
tevyebird (Posted: 01/22/2007 6:08pm)
Neither Poverty Nor Riches, by Craig Blomberg (IVP, 1999). My first familiarity with Craig Blomberg was an appearance he made on Stu Epperson's talk show. There he was speaking, in regard to the tithe, the Old Testament had three, two of which were yearly, and one every third year, which equals 23 1/3% per year. This caught my attention, as I have been a believer for nearly thirty years, and had never heard of such a thing. Now, of course, there are wackos saying all kinds of things, but ther aren't any getting their books published under the IVP imprint, so I had to lay my hands on the book to read it through.
What Blomberg has researched out is a lot more than the above statement, although that may be the least heard and, therefore, the most attention getting. He deals with virtually every verse in the Bible that speaks in
some way about money, and comments on it. The title comes from Proverbs 30:8, and is a one phrase overview of everything God has to say about the subject. This, in turn, is challanging for almost anyone in the English speaking world in that, by historical standards, we...

Every sincere Christian desires to know and do the will of God. But do you ever have difficulty discerning God's will or direction for your life? I know that I have. Some months ago I was compelled by the Holy Spirit to begin writing a study on this topic. As soon as I was obedient to this prodding, I felt the power and presence of God in my heart and mind in a new and exciting way.
The Compass provides four weeks of daily devotional studies aimed at helping you discover and follow God's will. The book is intensely practical and personal. At the start of the book, you the reader will determine the context for the entire study. As such, the book will benefit anyone from new to mature believers. Outlines for weekly group meetings, including discussion questions, are included.
The Compass will strenghten you relationship with God, grow your faith, and help you to seek, find, and follow God's direction. The Compass is available at www.pleasantwordbooks.com, www.amazon.com, and other on-line bookstores.
Initial response from readers and small groups has been amazing. God is using this study to change lives, fulfilling the purpose for which He sent it. I...

THE PENDERWICKS is a very very very good book I'm on chapter thirteen out of eighteen!! This is what the back says: Meet the Penderwicks, four different sisters with one special bond. There's responsible, practical Rosalind; stubborn, feisty Skye (I'm the most like her lol); dreamy, artistic Jane; and shy little sister Batty, who won't go anywhere without her butterfly wings. When the girls and their doting father head off for a summer holiday, they are in for a surprise. That's not all but I have thing's to do....

My husband and I have fallen in love with this book!
It's a definate suggested read if you want to go deeper into the subject of our true home.
I've been blessed so much by this book and find myself reading certain paragraphs over and over again.
It's worth every penny and I'd be interested to hear comments and thoughts by anyone who has read it.

I bought Don Piper's book "90 Minutes in Heaven" for my mom for Christmas. While I was home for the couple days, I read the whole book. I just couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book. It offers hope and inspiration as a man died, went to heaven, and returned to tell his experience....

Well, here is another awsome excerpt from a page in the book " The Glory of Christmas" that I thought fit ChristianBlog.com perfectly.
Written by Charles Swindoll, It reads :
"Nobody is a whole chain. Each one is a link. But take away one and the chain is broken.
Nobody is a whole team. Each one is a player. But take away one player and the game is forfeited.
Nobody is a whole orchestra. Each one is a musician. But take away one musician and the symphony is incomplete...
You guessed it. We need each other. You need someone and someone needs you. Isolated islands we're not.
To make this thing called life work, we gotta lean and support. And relate and respond. And give and take. And confess and forgive. And reach out and embrace. And release and rely...
Since none of us is a whole, independent, self-sufficient, superb-capable, all-powerful hotshot, lets quit acting like we are.
Life's lonely enough without our playing that silly role.
The game's over. Let's link up."
This site is awsome. And it gives christians a perfect opportunity to do just what Swindoll says. Thanks a bunch Jesus.
By the way Charles Swindoll is...

What Folks Are Saying... |
 |
 |
“I wanted and needed a Christian community to be a part of. I needed to hear your stories, see your heart as my stories and heart were feeling so lost. This place has been a life line for me, and a part of my healing. How amazing is that? Quite amazing I think. I know I've said it before, but please let me say it again, maybe a few more times. Thank you all for just being in Him, and sharing the love and life that you have in you.” - beautifullife555 (Texas. United States)
