God bless America?
Posted by:  ginfwmy   (Posted: 07/04/2009 8:39am)
God bless America. These are words we all heard a lot after September 11, 2001. Everyone was saying this and it was written on signs all over the country. As truck drivers we got to see it and probably many of us had signs like this on our trucks. One day after 9/11 I was driving through Las Vegas and on one of the casino signs that usually feature some entertainment were the words God BLESS AMERICA. Frankly as a disciple of Jesus I was a little offended. But it got me to thinking about the phrase, “God Bless.” And I thought that in the Bible that phrase does not appear. But we as Christians often use this greeting or blessing. So what is the big deal? Maybe nothing but I sometimes tend to be a detail nerd, so stick with me a minute ‘cause I am going somewhere that may be worthwhile. In my life changing experience article I mentioned Proverbs 9:1, and how that got me praying about the seven pillars of wisdom. I don’t remember exactly how it came to me because there seems to have been several things pointing to this but it occurred to me...

A conversation with myself
Posted by:  ginfwmy   (Posted: 07/04/2009 8:05am)
For a long time I have thought that self talk was not very helpful, as I imagine many of us do. I continued to do it. The other day I was driving down the road discussing something with myself when I realized what I was doing. That is the way it usually goes and I became a little frustrated with myself, as usual. All of a sudden it dawned on me that I could use that same energy to speak with my heavenly Father. I could talk about the same things, or not. But I realized that he would be pleased if I spent more time talking with him. And it would be much better for me. So I put this simple plan into action. Whenever I begin talking to myself, I include my Father in the conversation. Now I cannot claim to have done this for a long time but in the short time I have done it I have noticed that it seems easy to remember to do, and is very beneficial to me. I was telling my son about this, and he replied that when we have conversations with ourselves, we usually come out looking pretty good....

Getting Over A Very Sad Day
Posted by:  happytoberestored   (Posted: 07/04/2009 7:34am)
May 21, 2009, dawned a day that I had not looked forward to seeing. Carley was going back to her mom on that day. How do you let go of a precious child for whom you have cared and grown to love over the prior seven months and not have your heart ripped out? I've cried more since that day than I remember crying in a long time. I know that God has a plan, but I certainly am confused by what He's doing. Of course, His Ways are not mine, this I know, oh this I know. As I type this right now, tears are streaming down my face. My heart hurts for her, for me, for Madison who grew to love "her sissy" in the time Carley was a blessing in our family. God please, Father, take away this pain. Let my heart begin to heal. Let me move past this experience of pain, please. I have a daughter to raise as she should be raised, in the way she should go. I cannot do that without You, Father. Please don't let the root of bitterness grow up in my heart. Please, Father. I've been gone from CB...

Jesus Loves Me
Posted by:  poodlelady   (Posted: 07/04/2009 3:08am)
Though my hair is white and my body racked with pain My Lord loves me just the same! "Senior version of Jesus Loves Me" Here is a new version just for us who have white hair or no hair at all. For us over middle age (or even those almost there) and all you others, check out this newest version of Jesus Loves Me. JESUS LOVES ME Jesus loves me, this I know, Though my hair is white as snow Though my sight is growing dim, Still He bids me trust in Him. (CHORUS) YES, JESUS LOVES ME.. YES, JESUS LOVES ME.. YES, JESUS LOVES ME, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO. Though my steps are oh, so slow, With my hand in His I'll go On through life, let come what may, He'll be there to lead the way. (CHORUS) When the nights are dark and long, In my heart He puts a song.. Telling me in words so clear, "Have no fear, for I am near." (CHORUS) When my work on earth is done, And life's victories have been won. He will take me home above, Then I'll understand His love. (CHORUS) I love Jesus, does He know?...

Whew! who would have thought this whole forgiveness thing would be so hard
Posted by:  throughfaith   (Posted: 07/04/2009 1:10am)
Recently I have come to the understanding that I have some forgiving to do in respect to a certain person in my life ... in my families life. At first I thought, ok, I'll let this person know what they did and see if we can talk about it and whatever happens, I'll forgive him anyway. So through a kind of long and complicated process, I ceased to communicate with this person in any extraneous matter and addressed what I saw as "the problem". I tried to be as honest as I could and stay focused on the issue and listen when he spoke. And I prayed. As I said, I had decided that I was going to forgive him no matter what he said or did in relation to "the problem". So I wrote out a big long email to him and he came to the house and he and my husband and I sat in the living room and talked. He addressed a couple of things I mentioned and apologized without ever admitting he did anything wrong. Several of the issues he commented that "it isn't the right time to discuss that yet". And a few things, even...

Back from camp..
Posted by:  wmlder89   (Posted: 07/03/2009 6:34pm)
Having such a long, amazing, tiring week 2 states away, it feels weird being back home (frustrating also). While leaving for camp this past Sunday, it got more excited about camp. I didn't know what to expect when I went there this year. Feeling like my heart wasn't prepared for camp wasn't a good feeling.. I didn't want to miss out all week because of my own stuff I'm going through, and I didn't miss out on anything. The kids made it a great camp.. and the leaders/pastors that were there, were such amazing, Godly people. It turned out to be an amazing group of leaders and pastors that came together for this camp. And from my impression, it'll be 10 times better next year. The camp was held in Pigeonforge TN, when we first got there, I didn't the area where we had service to turn out very good.. but it turned out GREAT. We barely had enough time to set everything up, but we spent all of Monday in the building setting up. So much was talked about on the drive back home. My buddy, and a great friend of ours that we drove down there with, had...

"the woodpecker on the "titanic" had a"migraine headache"

Two weeks ago, I ate so much food, my wife will either buy me some "male maternity pants' before I do a "Incredible Hulk impersonation".. lol.I digress..My cousin from NYC came down for a family function. When they had settled down that afternoon in their hotel,I met up with with my oldest cousin and his wife. We went out to dinner and then ice cream. To be specific Italian water ice with vanilla custard on top.(They don't have this in NYC.)Next, it was off to the bus station to pickup my youngest cousin and her daughter. After that, it was a trip to "Wally World'(ie walmart lol)Then ,we called it a day.The next day was Saturday and in the afternoon, me and my wife picked up my cousins from their hotel and proceeded to the other hotel the family function was going to be held at.When we arrived, I seen people who I haven't seen in almost 20 years.By the way, this function was for us seeing a older sister of mine who moved to Florida years ago with her family. This was the first time we seen them in 14 years. It was especially hard being that due to a medical error, she...

What are you supposed to do?
Posted by:  lineman   (Posted: 07/02/2009 8:34pm)
The question was asked in another blog,What are you supposed to do when you know what the Word of God says about a situation yet if you stay faithful to what you know, the result will be anger, wrath and malice of all kinds? As I read the beginning of this blog I began to think of a totally different subject that has bothered me for some time now. I work at a hospital and daily see people that are so young, but sick and feeble. I often think when I see them that I would LOVE to tell them about the things I know from experience, from education, from health professionals, and from books about how to live a healthy life, yet how many of them would just think I was totally off my rocker? "What does he know?" might be a common question, yet these people who come in to get well spend lots and lots of money and all the while I see them eating things that are partly the cause of why they are there in the first place. Diet has a GREAT deal to do with how happy and healthy we are (duh!) but why...

Grace Gives Us The Keys To The Kingdom of Heaven
Posted by:  savedbyegrace   (Posted: 07/02/2009 8:14pm)
Our small church decided many years ago to save money on janitorial services, and so the leadership has divided the card-carrying church members into cleaning teams to clean the Lord's House on a weekly basis. Each team consists of roughly five families on it, and so it works out to be about once every six week our rotation comes up. I really don't mind cleaning the Lord's House at all, but it sure seems like our week always falls at the worst possible time. But we've been church members for many years and I have the keys to the church, and so I can go anytime between Thursday morning and Sunday morning to do our part without having to coordinate with the rest of the team. Generally a list is put out for us to choose an undone item or items and check off what we've done. This week was okay, though I really didn't have time to go and clean, it just so happened that I was going to the ladies' Bible study at church tonight and decided that I would just stay after Bible study and do the cleaning. My job this week was to clean the kitchen...

A Note From God to You ...
Posted by:  lineman   (Posted: 07/02/2009 7:54pm)
To : YOU Date : TODAY From : GOD Subject : YOUR LIFE Hi my friend, Today I will be handling all of your problems for you and will not need your help. Have a really great day, and remember that I love you. Blessings to you, God P.S. Remember... If life happens to deliver a situation to you that you cannot handle, do not attempt to resolve it yourself! Kindly put it in the SFGTD (Something For God To Do) box. I will get to it in My time. All situations will be resolved, but in My time, not yours. And once the matter is placed into the box, do not hold onto it by worrying about it. Just let me do what I do best, and in the mean time you should focus on all the wonderful things that are present in your life right now. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .. What would it be like to get a real note, or letter from God, kind of like the one above? Would this be something that God Himself would actually do for just one individual?...

On Living and not merely surviving
Posted by:  aidzz   (Posted: 07/02/2009 7:14pm)
Living and surviving mean different things. Living means making the most of our life. Simply put this means that doing things that we like and that what makes us happy. In this manner of existence, we appreciate the experience we encounter everyday as we live our life. Some of these experiences may not always turn out the way we expect them- but we treasure every lesson we learned from them and we had no regrets. This manner of existence makes us responsible for our actions. Living help us to nurture our relationship with God and our fellowmen. How wonderful is each day for us. We are full of anticipation. We live life in our own terms. We are not force into it because of necessity. But as we are responsible for all our actions and decisions, we live according to the Christian norms of life- where we are sensitive of other people who wants to live life too. We do not compromise the happiness of others by our insensitivity. How about surviving? Well if I may- surviving means an existence where we do things we are compelled to do in order to survive. For example we work not because we...

Hanging Out With The Pigs Or Hanging Out At The Castle?
Posted by:  kreynolds   (Posted: 07/02/2009 1:10pm)
The father's heart broke in two. He could not believe what his son had just said to him. His precious son, whom he loved so much, wished that he were dead... To a father living in Palestine during the time of Christ, that's what it meant when your son came to you demanding his inheritance while you were still breathing. You were simply a barrier between them and your fortune. Many men would have killed their son for saying such a thing. Such disrespect! Such a lack of love for their own father! It would not be tolerated. That's not what this father did though. With a heavy heart, this father divides up the inheritance and gives his younger son his share. That in itself was also highly unusual. It just wasn't done that way. To make matters even worse, shortly after receiving his inheritance, the younger son packs up and leaves. He doesn't go buy the house down the road. The Bible tells us he goes to a distant country (Luke 15:13). More pain! Although the Bible does not tell us, I have a feeling the father knew what was going to happen. The son's personality is clearly revealed...

Making Progress In Self-denial.
Posted by:  bimonics   (Posted: 07/02/2009 8:33am)
Soul training. Learn from Evagrius (my soul) that the self-denying struggle to keep the commandments of Jesus in spirit, truth, and thought is progressive: First you must force yourself to make an honest effort to choose the right in all circumstances in line with the Word of God regardless of the cost. Along with an endeavor to establish good and godly habits from the inside out. This will start the process of bringing your ill-passions from your passionate parts (the starting place of your negative emotions) to a normal functioning according to God's original design. Next, the door will be opened for you to make progress in your hidden man of the heart milieu of awareness. Here you will be able to establish good and godly habits in accord with that corresponding domain, but needless to say not without the working of and uncreated energy of the Spirit of God. This will bring your mind of the heart to a normal operation according to your original nature or the common nature of the Model set before you. You were designed primarily for the apprehension of Truth and the contemplative knowing of God.[1]. Use the self-denying intuitive word on the soul...

A Picture of the Perfect Bride
Posted by:  oneofhisown   (Posted: 07/01/2009 11:24am)
**I apologize for the title. . . I was going to write something else, changed my mind and thought I could change the title during editing! Should be: I am a Submissive Wife and This is Why. ** I thought I would take a moment and explain something that I believe has been misunderstood and twisted in today's culture. It's something that has bothered me for a few years now. It is actually something that I mentioned in my testimony, and someone commented, actually calling me "Submissive Sara". I didn't know how to respond, as I get heated when in the moment. So here is my heart, being poured out to show you where I stand on the subject of submission. I believe in wifely submission. I know that some of you are thinking "Sara, I hope you are not being mistreated! Be careful that you are not taken advantage of!" among other thoughts. I am not, nor have I ever been mistreated in any way by my hubby or any other important male figure in my life. Yes, I know those marriages exist where the wife is literally a possession, is mistreated or even abused. That is not how...

A kind hand to lift me up from the nether gloom...!
Posted by:  tohimbeglory   (Posted: 06/30/2009 6:46pm)
It's been a while since we take our mind to the open sea and go to fish in deep waters. A freind sent me a kind comment of encouragement, I needed one. As I turned to this site, I remember what it says, Trust in the Lord with all you heart, Lean not on your own understanding, In all ways acknowledge him, And he will make you paths straight... How I needed to remember those words. My gloom was thick and nether. I just got off the phone with my daughter in someplace and she had some problem, the same what I have, or had. I told her not to loose hope and keep the faith. But I needed to hear those words. The giver needed to be given, the dispenser needed some dispensing...And now I now that I can trust in God. The deep water cannot stem the peace of God. I know I will survive, sound like the song. But I was so blessed today. God returned me the gift to go into deep water and set my sails to the open sea. With Jesus at my side to calm the storms, the stars he sets in heaven...

Living the Life of Christ in Troubled Times
Posted by:  joeyleone   (Posted: 06/30/2009 9:41am)
I don't know if it's just me... but all I see around me are lives being destroyed. Lives that once had joy, now sadness. Once patience, now anger. The more as days go by, the more I see dissatisfaction in the lives of people. This is not just those outside the church, but the one's inside also. Personally, I struggle with anger and dissatisfaction and most times, I know that it is usually when I am not in the Word or in fellowship with God, that these problems occur. Now add in the factors of poor work relationships, children, the economy, caring for others, and the stress can become overwhelming. Now that I feel stressed, the thoughts that always come to mind is that Christ is in this. How do we deal with stressful relationships? Christ! How do we deal with the economy? Christ! How do we care for others? Christ! And the only way we can do this is if we are in the Word consistently. However, I find myself not being motivated most days to pick up the Word or to have devotions with my family due to the stresses of this life. How can this be accomplished?...

We DO live in Babylon
Posted by:  jules19osu   (Posted: 06/29/2009 8:02pm)
I am currently doing a bible study on the book of Daniel by Beth Moore. The way she parallels this book to our lives today is astounding. She talks about how Babylon is a mentality, and not just a physical city. It is our culture, it is the way we live and think. (Well hopefully, it's NOT the way we live and think). It is the mindset of "I AM, and there is none besides me". How amazingly true this is. It describes our culture perfectly. There are so many people out there (myself included) who think this world is all about them. The world revolves around me. I am entitled to everything just because I am. God, please deliver me from this mindset. I want so badly to be selfLESS not selfish. Her words every week really resonate with me. The study is about living a life of integrity in this world and just how hard it is. I feel desperate to live this way, but somehow, day after day I fall victim to Babylon. The book of Daniel is one I've read a few times, but it has never SUNK in just how amazing this book really is....

... Have Not Fellowship With Devils ...
Posted by:  bimonics   (Posted: 06/29/2009 9:58am)
A TRUE WORD ON DEMONS. Notice (my soul) that many pagan religions, cults, and occults do not flinch with regard to the reality of demons. The problem with them is that they traffic with them either openly or without a realization of their activities. Most occults and secret societies reserve the revealing of their demon-god(s) for the highest level of their order or religion, waiting until the vested interest of the participant is great, insuring against a large drop-out rate from their religious order. A true and intuitive word on demons (demonology) is that they are always agents of evil (Acts 10:38). In true Christian thinking and one of the main reasons for self-denial is based on the existence of demons and their evil designs. You must have a on-going and personally consistent response in accord with true Christian tradition.[1]. What is the right reason and true Christian response to the belief that not only do demons exist, but that they provide thought-images as temptation? A consistent strategy and program for rejecting them and their activity, as well as denying one's self of the temporary pleasures they offer, regardless of rather or not those pleasures (temporary benefits) are real or...

In the Valley
Posted by:  philruby   (Posted: 06/29/2009 2:58am)
At this time I am walking in the valley. For the first time in my life I feel that I truly understand what the psalmist meant when he said, "Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death." It is an ominous, black, heavy place to be. Unfortunately, I cannot say, "I fear no evil." My soul is dark and my mind is confused. I feel alone and friendless, and used by many. It is as though the Lord has turned His back on me. Yet I know that this is not so. I recently read a comment by a friend on another web site that said, "When it seems your path is blocked, it may be that you are simply being redirected to a better path." I hope that better path presents itself soon. When I was in the sunlight, on the mountain, it was easy for me to say that I understood the plights of those who were in the valley. It was easy for me to pray for them and feel that God was in control...I felt very positive that all would be well in the end for them. It is a quite different...

America Needs the Prayers of the People of God
Posted by:  retiredrev   (Posted: 06/28/2009 8:20pm)
2009, July 4, marks the 233rd birthday of the nation of America. The document which was signed by fifty-six men, which declared independence from earthly powers, is concluded with these powerful words: “With a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor”. Twenty-nine of these men suffered deep loss as nine of them died as a result of war. America has been held to the highest place of respect through these past years. Looking around the landscape of other nations, one can find resources which should be a boon to each of these countries. When America’s vast vaults of natural blessings are looked upon, one can see the hand of God at work in molding those blessings into a respected and successful nation. People by the thousands, through the years, have sought refuge in the nation. Lives have been started over and developed into fantastic success stories. The mission of Jesus Christ has found safe haven within the borders of America for the sharing of the Good News of the gospel around the world. Churches have been free to preach the love of God and salvation...

Do you believe, or just believe?
Posted by:  lineman   (Posted: 06/28/2009 4:33pm)
It seems to me that part of our problem as Christians is understanding the word "belief". When a person accepts the gift of eternal life he accepts it in faith and many Christians say that this person then has "accepted the Lord", or is "saved", but what seems to be misunderstood is the difference between "believing" and "believing". Did you know that the Bible tells us that the Devils "believe"? Check it out: Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. James 2:19 The "belief" that Jesus is wanting from us is not an acknowledgment of the fact that He is real, or that He died. It is an acknowledgment that Jesus came and died so that we can actually live, yes, but it does not stop there. It's a realization of how "hopeless" our situation is because of sin. It's a trusting of Him to do in us what we wish we could do for ourselves, but can't. If we really believe that Jesus loves us, then we will also trust Him to do whatever HE wants with us. To really "believe" we must come to the place were we are...

Not knowing where you are right now
Posted by:  wmlder89   (Posted: 06/27/2009 11:49pm)
On the brink of where I am in life right now, being in a leadership position, with youth that I love with all my heart, you always wonder where God is going to take you. So much is going on in my life right now that I KNEW would never happen, that it's hitting me really hard, and it's made for a pretty rough year so far. I'm leaving in 6 hours, to go to a youth camp in TN, and going into this week of having camp, I want my heart to be where it needs to, for the youth, and for myself. And at times, I feel like it's not because of everything I've been through this year. I don't want to miss out on God this week, or not be able to be there for the youth. This can be a great week, and it needs to be for me, and everyone. I think like a lot of people around me, it's time for a new season in my life, one I don't feel like I'm yet pre-pared for. I often think to myself, I don't feel like God is going to keep me at the church...

Living by FAITH, not by sight
Posted by:  pievenicole   (Posted: 06/27/2009 5:50pm)
Current Mood: Facing Reality Message: I've been in denial for quite some time. Pretending that certain sins and problems do not exist. Well i'mdone with it! Can't go on lke that. For i realize that by not dealing with them, i only worsen the situation; whereas, by dealing with them, it could help me grow even if it would hurt me. Why was i in denial???... Maybe because i wasn't livingby faiith. Then, what does it mean to live by faith??... I kind of learned that when we say we live by faith:.. we face the problems, we admit our weaknesses and sins.. we face them with our eyes fixed or focsed on JESUS and on HIS promises. By that we experience "the peace that transcends all understanding" even when hings are not going the way we want it to be. Before we can surrender situations or things to GOD, we must first face the fact that they exist. When we pretend that they don't... well, they're still there growing and saturating our hearts little by little. Be it a sin, anger, condition of yourself with others.. etc. We Christians are not immune to such things. But we can be...

Grace To Run The Race or Finish the Race or Cheer at the Finish Line
Posted by:  savedbyegrace   (Posted: 06/27/2009 7:36am)
My story Several years ago I suffered a severe knee injury, a torn ACL. Mostly this injury occurs in athletes, many a football player ends his career when he has this injury. The injury can be repaired, but there is something about manmade body parts and repairs not equaling our God-given body parts, and after the injury is fixed, often speed and agility are not the same as they were before. Thankfully, speed and agility are not necessary for me in my life. I am not an athlete. I do not have small children to keep up with. In fact, as I went through the rehab process after my initial butcher job -- I'm sorry, I mean after my first surgery, and I complained to my doctor that I could not even think to run, he asked me rather rudely, "Well, do you need to run?" And I responded to him that where in my normal life I do not need to run, but I thought it might be a handy skill to keep around, just in case I had to run for my life or run to save somebody or run to get help for someone. I learned a...

Getting drunk and shacking up “Christians”
Posted by:  barbourjohn   (Posted: 06/27/2009 6:17am)
Getting drunk and shacking up “Christians” Along with drinking and getting drunk we could add to this “shacking up” (sex outside marriage) and even in some circles homosexuality 2. There seems to be no desire for holiness 2 just a bunch of excuses like “nobody’s perfect” , 3 “We are all sinners” ,4 or “one sin isn’t any worse than another” 5. (See below for footnotes) I think what is at the root of a lot of these problems is the moral relativism that the younger people have bought into and have brought into their Christian walk and into the church. Many of them have even got into positions of leadership through music and a natural gift of gab. Where did they get this from? Four places primarily: 1. The pulpit: too many years of antinomian doctrine, easy believism, and lack of in depth Bible teaching. The churches that purport to be Bible based often teach a dispensational theology that makes sharp distinctions between law and grace as if they were opposites. Add to this, all the “liberal” churches that see Jesus’ message as just “be nice” and you can see the problem. 2. The universities: It is no secret...

feelin alone,
Posted by:  bbbink   (Posted: 06/26/2009 12:21pm)
my subject line sums it all up on a nutshell. i feel alone, not all the time but sometimes i feel like im the only 17 year old active in my faith in christ. i know it isn't true and that there are many other truley devoted young christians but it's seems like where i live because of my faith i miss out on alot of "teen age" things.my boyfriend and i even go to church together and i really love it,but i find him getting caught in temptation and not wanting to get pulled out. i feel often obligated to falter to what he thinks and does allthough i do feel so strongly about my God,because i love my boyfriends so much. im not saying my boyfriend is a bad person at all, he deffffffffffinatly isn't but i just feel like i need to find a way for us to conqure all of this temptation. no more pre-marital sex, cursing, and being involved with people who don't exactly make the right choices. but how do i tell him that? we're only 17,and it scares me to think that i could potientally loose him because he wants one thing which isn't the...

What's the Deal with Christian Drinkers and Night Clubbers These Days?
Posted by:  barbourjohn   (Posted: 06/26/2009 11:32am)
What's the deal with Christian drinkers and night clubbers these days? To be honest, I’m troubled by it. Upon reflection I came up with these thoughts: 1. When we were first saved back in the day it was expected of people to give up drinking and going to bars. People testified to this all the time. “Before I was saved I used to drink and go to bars etc., then Jesus came into my life.” 1 Thessalonians 5:22 says, “abstain from all appearances of evil” and that’s what we were expected to do. The Bible was our authority. 2. When I was growing up we were also taken to rescue missions and shown the life of alcoholics. I had no desire for any of this. I don’t know if many young people now days even know what a rescue mission is. 3. Back then, bars were dirty, smoky places with strange people; very unattractive. Now they are more family friendly like Las Vegas. Let’s face it. It’s much more attractive and young people seem to have the money; something we were always short of. 4. I never really ever had the desire to drink or go to bars or nightclubs....

I Want To Run Well...
Posted by:  kreynolds   (Posted: 06/26/2009 4:50am)
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24 (NIV) This was not just any race. Paul was making reference to the Isthmian games which were held every two years on the Isthmus of Corinth. They were held in honor of the gods and events included foot races, chariot races, boxing, competitions in javelin and discus throwing, horse races, wrestling, boxing, and jumping contests. The Greeks took these competitions very seriously. Very seriously. They were passionate about them as evidenced by the fact that the prize initially was a ... celery wreath. It's true... that was the prize. Later it was a crown of fir. Some prize huh? This is the perishable crow Paul was referring to when he wrote: Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 1 Corinthians 9:25 These athletes would put themselves through rigorous training and for what... to win a wreath (crown) of greens which they could wear on...

Not paulians, or even tarsians... but Christians!
Posted by:  blackrose65   (Posted: 06/24/2009 5:55pm)
I love the Apostle Paul. He was a great guy.. had a great 'tude about his lot in life, and he was a prolific writer! Wrote 2/3 of the New Testament... really busy guy. However... I am not a disciple of Paul! However, since I've been on this blog, I've met an amazing number of people that extol the Apostle..even more so than the Man Who sent Him! I've seen people just gaga over how Paul suffered and went through trials and was noble and ... yeah. It was amazing. I am truly grateful. But! Let's take a quick look at something here... Genesis 8:22. Seedtime and harvest. Cogitate upon that... let it marinate. Here's another verse about seeds and harvests to meditate on... Mark 4:26-28 especially verse 28"For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear" -KJV Why am I bringing this up? Well, before you all start throwing stones at me... think a minute- what was Paul doing before that famous encounter on the Damascus road. Need a refresher? ok. How about Acts8:1-3 and Acts 9:1-2. Paul was a zealot for the faith.. and that...

Are you parched? Quinch your thirst with living water.
Posted by:  aliveintheword   (Posted: 06/24/2009 1:32pm)
Are you parched? Quinch your thirst with living water. For the past few days it's been hot in eastern Missouri. Summer came in like a blast furnace. This follwed a week ofr so when we'd had rain in abundance. I think the harware stores had sold out of cubit sticks for those condisering building large boats. Where I work, we've been selling a lot of liquids. Cases of coke in all brands and flavors (see Gracie, I remember) have been flying off the shelves. In fact, anything that splashes has been selling like crazy. So, this got me to thinking about this combination of heavy, endless rain followed by parching heat. How many of us do this in our spiritual lives. We "catch the Spirit" and spend a time drowning ourselves in spirituality. Then we move into a dry spell. And we know this this sort of dry spell can get hot! And for a very long time. So, how do we keep from becoming parched, spiritually? We don't do it by spurts and dashes. We do it by making intentional decisions to worship and stay in communion with God. We can all find a zillion and 23 reasons to...

Over 11,000 and growing... Congrats CB... or maybe not?
Posted by:  aliveintheword   (Posted: 06/24/2009 11:50am)
Over 11,000 and growing... congrats cb... or maybe not? Over the past day or two, ChristianBlog has grown to over 11,000 members. No matter how you measure that, it is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations to John and crew are most certainly in order. Sooooo... Congratulations John for this wonderful site! Those of us who are regulars here do call it our home in deeply felt ways. But wait... what does that 11,000 mean? I just did a quick view of all those listed as having birthdays today. Of the 28 listed, I could view the profiles of 27 (one is a minor.) Of those, as best I can recall, only 1 had more than 10 entries (blogs and comments combined.) The vast majority had either 1 or none. More than 20 showed their last visit as being within a month of their becoming members. Most of those within a day and many within minutes. Although shown as active members, many have not visitied in well over a year, some two. Of those 11,000, a relatively small number are regularly active here. Although I find these numbers somewhat discouraging, I don't see this as in anyway indicating any failure here at...

If everyone is on the stage of life,"who's in the audience?
Posted by:  iraqivetsgtret   (Posted: 06/24/2009 10:52am)
2weeks ago, was the 2nd of a visit to a assisted living home. This time it was different, there was a birthday party and We stayed for it. There was older Christian lady who sang Karaoke. Before she started singing, she needed help with Her audio equipment. She came over to me and asked for My assistance. She later said that God sent her over to me In a answer to her prayer for help. I was humbled and embarrassed At the sametime.. I will explain, she started singing and came over To the table where we(me and my wife and her client) were sitting. Everyone in the room had a good laugh. We all did and then was Served cake and ice cream. Me and my wife had to go to work Right after that. Fast forward to Friday.. I had to go pickup a dining Room table and a patio table with lots of chairs. My wife had bartered With my client’s son. Right after , we finally got it upstairs, it was time To go to church for prayer. Yes, I did go to bed early for a Friday night. Saturday , was the first time ,...

Grace To Make Someone's Day
Posted by:  savedbyegrace   (Posted: 06/24/2009 9:17am)
This will not be a blog whining about how everything is breaking around my house. But a certain amount of telling you that everything is breaking around my house is necessary to set the stage, so to speak. So before we go on vacation, the dryer dies. Luckily, our vacation condo had a washer/dryer so I was able to pack dirty clothes and wash and dry them there. Not so happily, though, the dryer issue loomed large upon our return. When we got home, of course, then the vacuum cleaner died in mid-path. Well, at least son got the foyer/living room area done in case anybody comes calling at my little house in the big woods. So me, the internet queen begins googling to see what's up with the dryer. Hubby tears it apart and it's all over the house now. We determine a likely cause and I order the part. More googling reveals that there is an equal likelihood of another problem so I decide to add to my order to save on shipping charges. Go figure! Once placed, an order cannot be edited in any way, even if it hasn't shipped out yet. But the lady on the...

Grace To Know Where I Am and Where I'm Going
Posted by:  savedbyegrace   (Posted: 06/23/2009 8:51pm)
My poor son. He has been dragged against his will into adulthood, kicking and fighting it the whole way. I couldn't believe he was not anxious to get his driver's license when he first turned 16, and then I couldn't believe that I had to stamp my foot and demand that he go get his driver's license because I was not going to drive him to college. Then he didn't want to take his car on campus, which is fine because it's really expensive to do that. So now, the end result is that he has very little driving experience. It was not without some trepidation that I waved him off as he drove to South Carolina to house sit for his sister. All was well, however, until I got the call on my cell phone while on vacation at the beach. It was my daughter. "Mom, have you heard from Brother?" "No, I haven't." I replied. "Why?" "He's lost." "He can't be lost. He has the GPS." "He says he doesn't know where he is." Thankfully, he apparently finally turned on the GPS and even though he didn't know where he was, it did know where he was and...

Grace To Learn From Past Mistakes But Wanting A Mulligan
Posted by:  savedbyegrace   (Posted: 06/23/2009 8:29pm)
*I trust alight will be suitably impressed by the title* I'm actually calm and not stressing or anxious, but I'm reflecting and kind of in a meditative mood today. Mostly about what I would do differently if I had a chance to live my life over. So anyone younger than I am, sit down and pay attention. I wish I had saved more money. I wish I hadn't thought there'd be time for that later, right now I need (fill in the blank). I wish I had worked for employers that offered a retirement plan, instead of thinking there'd be time for that later on. I wish I hadn't thought that my employer would appreciate me and take care of me. I wish we had learned to live on one income so that I wouldn't have worked when my children were at home. I wish I hadn't let that first extra 10 pounds stay there, thinking there'd be time to lose it later. I wish I hadn't refinanced my house to pay off some credit card debt all those many years ago. I wish I hadn't allowed that credit card debt to accumulate all those many years ago. I wish...

Who do i love more?
Posted by:  zkoehn   (Posted: 06/23/2009 5:01pm)
I've been stuggling for the past few years with a certain sin. I truly wanted to stop and asked God to help me and for forgiveness. Last night I had this dream where a friend of mine came up to me and said i have a word for you. God wants to know who you love more. In the dream i knew exactly what she was talking about. Now i have no idea if the dream was from God, me, or you know Satan. The reason being that in the dream such a hopeless consumed me. A despair that i haven't felt was so great in my dream that i have a hard time thinking that it was really of God. However it has got me thinking. Who do i love? Do i love God enough to let go of what i want or only give half hearted attempts to break this addiction. Gods a merciful god and I wonder if ive only been giving him half hearted attempts. Do i love God enough to really fight to give God all that he deserves? to live me life the way he wants me to? Anyone who reads this i ask...

Camp fire stories and some other stuff too
Posted by:  cowgirldiva   (Posted: 06/23/2009 11:22am)
The tale I'm about to unfold is one that will take you on a personal story of growth. For some, it may be hard to hear, for others, it may be one of profound inspiration or still others, one of great laughter. However, no matter where you stand on the issues I am about to discuss, please note that I give all glory to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, forever and ever, amen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Day One "Please Lord Jesus, please come back before I have to go to camp! Please!" I silently begged as we drove to the college campus where I'd be staying for six days. Unfortunately, God didn't see fit to answer my prayer right then. I'm the kind of person who does not like stepping outside of her comfort zone. I like my box. I like what is familiar to me. End of story. Pocahontas and I are total opposites. Her life is, "What's around the river bend?" while I'm more of a Quasimodo fellow, not wanting to go out of my Notre Dame tower. God, however, does not care if you do not want to step out of your comfort zone. Personally, I like...

Taking Inventory of Our Faith
Posted by:  eschator83   (Posted: 06/23/2009 8:45am)
Taking Inventory of Our Faith The following checklist can be helpful both as a reminder and an evaluation of the key elements of our faith to assess our spiritual well-being or that of a relative, friend, or neighbor. Try a quick check on yourself, giving one point for a bit of Joy, two points if you are mostly Joyful, three if you are almost always Joyful, and four points if in the last week or so you have encouraged someone else to be Joyful in their faith. I won't ask readers to share their scores, unless of course they want to, because it might reflect either vanity or despair, both of which I'd prefer to help overcome, rather than to encourage. But I do welcome comments on whether you feel the evaluation was useful and if it motivated you to take action to strengthen your faith or assist someone else. Scoring: a bit=1, mostly=2, very=3, sharing/encouraging/teaching=4 Joyful Hopeful Peaceful Learning/Improving Love of neighbor Teaching/counseling Service Charity Love of God Love of Jesus Worship Prayer Resist/Oppose sin Using God's Power Sensing God's message Obedience Sensing God's Love FAQs- well, no one has actually asked but I thought someone might: Most people...

Has it really been that long??
Posted by:  girlforgod   (Posted: 06/23/2009 6:59am)
Has it really been this long since I was on CB? It feels like forever... so much has happened and I could probably come up with a hundred blogs to write but I will narrow it down to this one for time sake I took a leave of absence from CB because of sickness. I went from having a tick bite to having an upper respiratory infection that led to bronchitis, which led to pnumonia, which in turn affected my asthma (oh the medical bills.lol) Glad to say I am finally headed down the road of recovery. God has been most gracious to me. Since the leave I have endured some battles and hardships but God has always prevailed and kept his hand on me and my babies. I only had to miss singing a special one time through out all of this, and continued on the worship team (thank you Jesus for GREAT sound men)... I sounded like a cow dieing at one point and looked at the congregation to appologise and they were laughing so hard I couldnt help but laugh too... It was wretched but it was fun The kids are doing amazing. Denver turned 6 yesterday.....

Prayer
Posted by:  sbloggerh   (Posted: 06/22/2009 3:04pm)
Philippians 4v6-8 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanks giving, present your requests to God. The words that stood out to me were; "With thanks giving" God wants us to come to him with a heart of thanks. Being thankfull then opens the door for us to give ourselves as a present to him. Sometimes we come to him and unload our dump truck, and walk away not feeling any better. Why? because God is the most important relationship we have in our lives, so we need to honour him. When we begin to be thankful our spirit lifts us higher into his presence. We begin to focus on God rather than the issues. When we have reached that place, then we can begin to present our requests to Him. Then God promises something really awesome. v7 And the peace of God which is beyound all human understanding will guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. How great and awesome is that. Peace and rest will come and the anxiety and worry will be gone. YAY. Something to think about, me especially! Godbless...

The last time some one said that to me!
Posted by:  blackrose65   (Posted: 06/22/2009 10:50am)
A rather painful anniversary is coming up for me... it was this time last summer, I left my mom. I had to... I couldn't take any more from my aunt... I understood why my aunt was behaving the way she did, and it still hurt. (not going there right now... still healing.) Anyhow, I had a friend that claimed she understood and wanted to help me, she invited me to come and stay with her until the plans my mom and I had came to fruition... sounded good. While we were talking, she told me she had found a new beau, and they were together constantly... great... I thought. Not realizing that the guy had already moved in with her! She knew he was there and she invited me to move in with her anyhow! And all during the time I was in her one room apartment, with the bathroom tucked in the bedroom- they had been planning- since he was married, he was planning his divorce, custody arrangements and how to divide his SSI payments to cover his new life and child support. They were planning- she was helping him with his debt, which was ridiculous, and orchestrating the...

Denominations, why are there so many?
Posted by:  lineman   (Posted: 06/22/2009 6:58am)
How can there be so many denominations, each with it's own set of doctrines, when they all claim to follow the same Bible? In my mind, the answer to this question can be illustrated by thinking of "truth" as a solid, pure gold ball, and to hide this pure gold ball in plain sight you would need to create many others that look just like the original ball, but that are not exactly like it. These "counterfeit" balls could be made out of steel, glass, plastic, wood, lead or anything else that can be covered with gold. You could even take real gold and add a small amount of another metal if you want it to look and feel like the first one. If you made hundreds of these "counterfeits" and placed them with the first one, it would be very difficult to find the original gold ball. There may still be "value" in each of these "counterfeits" but they are not pure like the original. Just like with the solid, pure gold ball illustration above, the Devil needs to hide the solid, pure truth about God. He has already tried to destroy truth by having Bibles burned, people tortured...

Amazing Grace sung as you've never heard it before!
Posted by:  mkmills   (Posted: 06/22/2009 6:14am)
Hello Everyone, I receive a lot of forwarded emails from old friends. Some aren't so good. (No problem. I simply hit the 'delete' button.) Some though, are wonderful. Being a photographer and a former Army pilot, many of the emails I receive are photos of old aircraft, which I enjoy. Even more, I enjoy the powerpoint slideshows of photography of nature and flowers, etc. But this link I want to share with you now was completely different. Of all the Christian hymns, Amazing Grace, stands out as being one of the best. It's also interesting that even non-Christians are drawn to it and moved by its beauty and powerful message. Being somewhat musically challenged, I've never heard of the men's quartet, Il Divo, but these men sing this song with more majesty than I've ever heard it before! If you take the time to listen, you will be blessed! Turn up the volume! note: When you get to the page that says, "Il Divo -- European Tour" scroll down the list of songs and interviews until you see "Amazing Grace" and click 'play.' Amazing Grace Enjoy!!! Michael...

Don't be afraid to take risks
Posted by:  blessings2you   (Posted: 06/22/2009 2:30am)
There are few things in life as disturbing as having all one’s work, which many times took hard work and financial sacrifice, be torn down or destroyed. One of those things more disturbing is having to tear it down yourself. As I am sitting here typing this, I can see the tractor of the farmer who farms the 200 acres next to our property disking his field. This would be normal if the field were weeds. It is not. The field was planted in corn a month ago and then due to incessant heavy rains, many seeds never germinated or were washed away. So, here is a farmer who spent many days and tons of money preparing the field for planting, planting the seeds and spraying nitrogen on the planted fields out there plowing under the scrawny corn crop. I can only imagine the disgust in his heart as he destroys what he so carefully planted a month ago. Even with insurance, he is bound to lose money on the deal. I can feel his pain for I had to do the same thing with my garden last week. For the first time in twenty years I will have only...

God Fearing
Posted by:  starjeffro13   (Posted: 06/21/2009 11:15pm)
So, God Fearing. The way I used to first view this term it meant that if one were God fearing one loved God. I started thinking of how I could truly become more God fearing. Upon much contemplation I've thought about what it actually means and what I really need to work on to get there. After all that thinking I've come to this conclusion that God fearing to me is a literal definition of the phrase. If I'm God fearing I'm to be consciously worried about my decisions and actions and how God will view them and what he thinks. I've often tried to think about what is wrong and right and well I mean everyone is taught that growing up, but you have to choose to learn it. I think I've learned more so to look at it as it's not really what I think is wrong and right it is what the Lord thinks is wrong and right. What pleases him, what makes him upset. That sort of thing. Over this past year of lent I gave up swearing and since then have no true need for it in my life. I will admit that I do...

Dreaming of Heaven too? Tell us about it!
Posted by:  lineman   (Posted: 06/21/2009 10:33pm)
Heaven is going to be our home someday and so I have tried to imagine what this might look like based on what the Bible actually tells us about this place. I know that I will never get it right, but it's fun to think about anyway. And I feel that it is important for us as Christians not to "spiritualize" away the very truths that make it our home. God must have put these descriptions in His Word for a reason, right? Let's think about this right now. What happens when there is a bright light (God's throne) at the end of a long clear fiber (the divided street of gold)? And down the middle of the street is a river, also flowing from the throne. I am guessing that light will follow this river as well. Do you suppose that there will be waterfalls and lakes as the river flows towards the city walls? (Remember that God's throne is high and lifted up.) What do you suppose the river water is flowing over? Transparent stones too? That could really make for an interesting light show. What do we know about the shape of the city? How big is...

The Role of the Man in the Home Hasn't Changed
Posted by:  retiredrev   (Posted: 06/21/2009 7:40pm)
From the first pages of the Bible we discover man in a difficult situation. He has listened to Eve, the wife God gave to Him, who convinced him to eat the forbidden fruit. As a result of his disobedience before God, the Adam family is driven from their beautiful, peaceful home in Paradise. Instead of living among the ever producing fruit of the original plants, Adam has to now grow his crops as the sweat pours from his body. The ground he plants will produce thorns and thistles along with some eatable herbs. Besides the labor now required to grow his fruit, Adam will now live a number of days and after death return to the dust from which he came. Throughout history, especially Biblical history, the responsibility of the man has been to be the provider for his family. Even in the much debated Ephesians 5:22-28 scripture passage, where the wife is ordered by scripture to be in submission to their own husband, he is ordered to love his wife even as Christ loved the church. And Christ’s love was a sacrificial love in that He willing gave up His life for the church. In our more sophisticated, modern...

...Drawn Away ... And Enticed ...
Posted by:  bimonics   (Posted: 06/20/2009 5:07pm)
Soul training on temptation. Dear soul, with your mind in your heart keep a sober watchfulness. Watch very carefully for any image in your full area of awareness that can begin to set you up for a fall. Take the time to read, learn, and know the details of this process from the many true Christian authors who were or are practitioners of this aspect of self-denial. Try to grasp the stages of temptation from the initial image, to the thought, to the consent, to the committing of the sin outwardly in word or deed, to the bad habit, vice, or addiction. Realize fully how the first type of image and thought progresses into and is related to the result (James 1:14,15). The saints of old have left a detailed account of the hidden-man-of-the-heart reality - the realm and the environment - the full area of awareness where a wise self-deny-er chooses his battles. Understand and learn this (my soul), for this is an essential aspect of self-denial and an intuitive logic of the workings of the soul - psychology - a good word on the soul.[1]. Sober watchfulness depends on careful focused attention in your mind-of-the-heart. There you can...

The Fathers Day Story
Posted by:  bubbavela   (Posted: 06/20/2009 8:16am)
I wrote this a while back, but i wanted to remind everyone what loving a father really means: When he woke up it was just before sunrise. It was the cool of the morning yet it seemed a bit warmer than usual. He was just now getting used to waking up at this early hour even though his brother had been gone for some time now. The first thing he did every morning was to check the horses and make sure they had plenty of hay and water. Then he would get a bucket, and milk one of the cows, before heading to the chicken coup to gather the eggs. Once he had completed this chore he would hurry home to hand over the eggs to his mother. By the time he was finished with the morning business it would be about the time that he use to waking up in the mornings. You see his brother had always been there to help with the chores, that was until he became lazy and greedy and demanded that he be able to set out on his own to search the world for its riches. There was more than a couple of...

Happy Father
Posted by:  bubbavela   (Posted: 06/20/2009 5:53am)
Well, happy fathers day to all of you who has the Father in them. I pray for you that He will brighten your days with His knowledge and understanding of what is His and the glory that awaits you. I pray that your hardships will not be long and that His glory will come upon you soon. For the Father that is in you is Greater Than All. I have these words to encourage you by: Romans 12; 09 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to...

Like my Father
Posted by:  mkmills   (Posted: 06/19/2009 7:43am)
Hello All, Below is a short story I wrote several years ago. It seems appropriate for this Father's Day, so I thought I'd share it with you. May all fathers who read it -- and even those who don't -- be drawn by our Lord into a closer walk with Him. Michael Two notes of interest: (1) As many of you have probably noticed, you cannot simply paste text from MSWord into this blog format/program. If you do, this program converts some of the characters into odd and unwanted characters. Since this story was written in Word, I have attempted to correct all of that. If any unintended characters remain, please forgive me. (2) It would appear that the automatic censoring program used here is a bit too aggressive. Near the end of the story I give a brief quote from the author who wrote Oliver Twist, Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, etc. However, the program saw fit to censor his last name -- first name: Charles. This should be obvious to most, if not all, of you. Just wanted to mention though, that I wasn't using profanity or anything close to that. Like my Father Michael K. Mills It's been...

Predestination, and the Troubles in Life
Posted by:  lineman   (Posted: 06/19/2009 5:26am)
At least 4 different times the Apostle Paul talked about us being predestined. Have you ever wondered what he was saying and what he really meant? At first glance it sounds like we might not even have a choice but will be forced into heaven even if we do not want to be there, but that is not what Paul is saying at all. Let's take a look at what he said first: Romans 8:29 - "For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren." Romans 8:30 - "Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified." Ephesians 1:5 - "Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will..." Ephesians 1:11 - "In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will..." Whom did God "foreknow"? Didn't He know every person on earth before they were born?...

... and that's how things get twisted!
Posted by:  blackrose65   (Posted: 06/18/2009 10:00pm)
You ever notice how something gets just ... out of context and is then treated like ... canon? I was reading a couple of blogs about the debate over speaking in tongues and... where did this debate come from? I read a reference to Babel, in Gen. 11:5-9, but we need to take a look at what was going on there. The people were all of one mind and that one mind was to purposefully wreak havoc in heaven. God's not having any of that. So He had to cause them to disperse. Ok, that was ONE incidence of God having to confound language to keep peace. From Acts 2:4 speaking in other tongues is a good thing, to be encouraged and practiced. My point is.. one incidence, taken out of context and.. things get twisted... Marriage and relationships... There were a few reasons for marriage to be a certain way for the Children of Israel and for the People of God... primarily, who you marry is the second biggest decision in your life. Your spouse has great influence over you. You want to have the same belief system as your spouse... if you don't.. you got problems... check out...

... let him deny himself ...
Posted by:  bimonics   (Posted: 06/17/2009 3:03pm)
Soul training in self-denial. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Matthew 16:24 (KJV). Your goal (my soul) in self-denial, so that you may even identify yourself with this inward reflex, is to arrive at a state in which your mind is in your heart. This will be the result of practicing mental self-denial along with a defined set of other related natural and spiritual skills. You are to develop a state of deep quietness and stillness, being the life-giving spirit that you are to your body. This includes stopping the mental images in your full area of awareness, except those generated from the continuous Jesus Prayer or use thereof. You are to always guard the mind of your heart. It is from this state that you, as a self-deny-er, are raised up by the uncreated energies (grace) of God to the contemplative knowing of existing things. Ultimately raised to the intuitive contemplative knowing of God Himself; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.[1]. Learn from Hesychios to relate the Jesus Prayer to a proven method of mental self-denial. He teaches you that you...

The Living Word of God, The Sword of the Spirit. My 100th blog
Posted by:  aliveintheword   (Posted: 06/17/2009 10:31am)
The Living Word of God, The Sword of the Spirit. My 100th blog This is my 100th blog since joining CB a bit over 3 months ago. I guess I've said a lot, and perhaps occasionaly even had something worthwhile to say. I am deeply humbled by those who have supported my ramblings here. I have grown beyond measure during this time. Recently, K published a blog about how she got her name here at CB. I'd like to briefly address my own. When I opened the homepage to this site it was the first time I had never visited any blog site. I had no idea what to expect. After studying the pages here for about an hour, I decided to become a member. So, what pops up first? A request to enter a nickname. I had not given this even one moment of thought before seeing that little entry box. I did not hesitate. I typed in "aliveintheword." I had absolutely no idea how profound that would be for me at that moment, how dramatically it would impact my life. My screenname here has taken on a very very deep meaning to me not only here, but in...

Even The Least Little Thing...
Posted by:  kreynolds   (Posted: 06/17/2009 10:13am)
I'm currently participating in a women's small group every Tuesday night. We meet at Panera. We are reading a book called "Better Than Our Dreams" by Paula Rinehart. We all have dreams in this life. As we get older, however, we quickly discover that either those dreams don't always get fulfilled or their not half as good as we thought they'd be. Sometimes our dreams are nothing like God's dream for us and we may find ourselves on roads we never expected to be on or unable to get on a road we hoped to be on. We have some amazing people here at CB. I rejoice at all the wonderful ways that God uses them. We have people who have had some amazing opportunities and are so gifted in many ways. There are amazing Bible scholars, teachers of the Word of God, gifted writers, speakers, administrators, ministers, etc. There are people who have taken the Gospel all over the world. They have seen and done amazing things. Praise God! It is easy to suddenly feel like you are very small and insignificant. You look at your life and you think "What have I done?" Sometimes, you may even feel...

I'm so lost I don't even know what to title this
Posted by:  throughfaith   (Posted: 06/17/2009 8:27am)
I am so confused and so lost right now I don't even know that I can explain the events that have lead up to this point. Several years ago God told us He would begin a new ministry in us. At the time we had no idea what that meant and it took us five years to figure it out. That ministry was to become foster parents for special needs children. But even as we were going through the process of becoming certified, we weren't sure that was what we really wanted to do and we dragged our feet and took a full year to go through the process ... and even as we took placement of our first child, we weren't sure we wanted to continue. But four years later we are sure of two things ... 1) Being therapeutic foster parents is exactly what God has purposed in our lives. Not only have we confirmed that through various tests but we have been told that by various other people that we trust and that have no interest in us being foster parents. and 2) We know we can work with these kids and make a difference in their...

Crazy idea...
Posted by:  sportigal021   (Posted: 06/16/2009 9:48pm)
Dear readers, I believe it is only fair to tell you that I am known for having crazy ideas that are too big for little me to follow through. Now that you have been fairly warned, I am going to share with you a crazy idea on how to help reach people in our area (whether that be Florida or Washington, it works everywhere). Everyone has homeless people in their city, right? Does anyone else feel heartbroken when they pass them on the street? Well, if every time we went to a hotel we took the FREE mini soaps (usually shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, and lotion) and took a tiny bit of money for bottled water or cards or canned goods, we could totally reach them! I used some hotel soaps, water, cards, and vienna sausages and put them is some cute lunch bags with acts 4:32 and 34 on them. that is my theme verse. Jesus met people's physical needs as well as their spiritual ones because He knew they would listen. (ex. feeding the 5,000 THEN teaching them). We can build a relationship with them and then share God's gift!...

Life as a highway, which way do you turn?
Posted by:  goodnews   (Posted: 06/16/2009 3:28pm)
Life is like a road. For the majority, it is a large super highway. It is an easy-riding road, with many lanes to choose from, all leading to the same destination. The Bible is our road map for the journey. The map points us to a road 'less traveled' , called Yahushua. Some of us get off the highway and start driving this narrow road. Contrary to the statement: "The straight and narrow" it is actually a very winding road, with a lot of twists and turns. It is anything BUT straight. Anyone who has gotten off the over-pass and taken the side roads through a town or city will know what I am talking about. There are all kinds of road signs on this less-travelled path, saying 'This way" or "That way". Occasionally you even come to an intersection with flashing lights and traffic cop directing you where to go. None of this happens on the super highway. You can sail along on the highway without even thinking about it. The road signs are put there by man. They may not be deliberately misleading, but genuinely meant as guides. How many times I have taken one, thinking it looked...

Hollywood, Here I Don't Come
Posted by:  mushy5   (Posted: 06/16/2009 1:34pm)
I just had to write about a thought for the day: the trap of taking on an identity that the world gives us, instead of completely losing your “identity” in Christ. I was thinking about labels; the ones our friends, acquaintances, family, work associates, put on us. You know; those seemingly mundane labels we all get; you’re smart, stupid, fat, skinny, ugly, pretty, lazy, talented, hardworking; everyone gets them. But I realized that as a Christian, those labels are gone; and good riddance. My only thought is to please God, and do His will. My personal “labels” no longer have any power to dictate their terms in my life. If I am living a life that is pleasing to Him, to do His will, not mine, the labels are meaningless, and no longer imprison me in their narrow definitions. I don’t have to feel insecure about who I am, because who I am, is in Christ. Then I expanded on that… When I go to the grocery store, as I stand in line I peruse the magazines that are displayed at the check-out stand. The headlines are telling. These magazines have a few things in common; they glamorize the world...

The House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
Posted by:  aliveintheword   (Posted: 06/16/2009 12:01pm)
The House of the Rising Sun - The Animals (1964) I grew up in the 1960's. What a wonderous time that was. It was a time of change, dramtic change. There was an unpopular war. The hippes were in vogue. Drug use was rampant. We were into discovering the esoteric. Political protest, racial strife. Big in the 1960's. I'm told there was something called "fee love." And there was the music! What a wonderful decade the '60's was. Well, except for the war, I was on the sidelines for most of the dramatic stuff of the '60's. And the music... Music of the 60's carried a message. It dealt with all of the things mentioned above. Music was activism. Music was memorable. Music had words you could understand. Music carried a message. Music wasn't drown out by beat, bass and, well, noise. Music pervaded the decade. Last night, while trying to get to sleep, this song from the Animals entered my head. I don't know why, it just did. As I lay in the dark, reeling in many thoughts, The House of the Rising Sun was prominent in the background. If you've not heard this song, or just want to...

Viewing faith and science through a glass door.
Posted by:  aliveintheword   (Posted: 06/16/2009 9:37am)
Viewing faith (God) and science through a glass door. Dear friends and companions, I've written previously about the interface of faith (God) and science. This is a summary of a conversation I had recently with a young woman who was struggling with this, seeing it as an "either, or" conflict. Like many, this mid-twenties woman has a very strong interest in the sciences. She is a data analyst by training and profession. We'd had several conversations on this "conflict" and she was struggling. She'd been brought up in a strong Christian family but had moved away from her faith when she went to college. As she explained it to me, there were two reasons for this. 1: Her friends at school were not beleivers and she was led into things "ungodly" in order to associate with them. No heavy drinking, promiscuity or heavy drinking. She'd just found the pleasures of "worldly living" and association with her classmates. 2: As she'd undertaken her studies, she tried to use what she was learning in school to "prove" the existance of God. As I myself learned, this is an impossible mission. I was visiting her workplace on another matter and we had a...

Where He leads is not what we had planned at times
Posted by:  blessings2you   (Posted: 06/16/2009 4:38am)
When we were children we constantly asked what we wanted to be when we grew up. For many, the answer mirrored a television show we may have just watched or what we learned in school. For many, the answer was to follow in their parents or older siblings steps. Whether being a fireman, a nurse, a doctor, an astronaut, a forest ranger or teacher; there was no concept of what was involved to become any of these things for they were, in our minds, just something you grow up and become. For a season I remember wanting to be a Veterinarian because my best friend in life was my dog. I wanted to be forest ranger because I loved the outdoors and thought it would be so cool to be alone deep in the forest. I wanted to be many things at different stages of my life, but there was one thing I really wanted to be all along. From as far back as I can recall, I was always infatuated with the weather. I guess growing up in Kansas I am ample opportunity to see the forces of nature “up close and personal” on more than one occasion. For...

Welcome to the steel wool pad that is ... my mind
Posted by:  blackrose65   (Posted: 06/15/2009 3:20pm)
My grand bishop jokingly stated that men's minds are like boxes, and women's minds are like steel wool pads... ( I'm not using the trademarked term... ) but anyhow, men compartementalize things in boxes and women... well things get all tangled and twisted and intertwined like steel wool... and so we begin... Had a major blast at our ministry conference! Loved it! Learned new things, Got refreshed and renewed in what is familiar... and it was all good. Lately tho' a few things have been a real burr under my mental saddle... like suffering. Suffering is inevitable in life, end of discussion. God does not reward us for suffering. He guides us through suffering and we will grow from the experience, or we will crumble away from Him- this is largely dependent upon our attitudes during the period of suffering. God does not encourage us to be in modes where we suffer just to be closer to Him. He wants us to walk with Him closely no matter what happens in our lives. Which brings me to the next topic stuck in the steel wool of my mind... faith and what you can do with it. I've seen issues on...

Did I tell you that I love you today?
Posted by:  lovinggodtoday   (Posted: 06/15/2009 8:14am)
Many married people develop little sayings or words that they use only with each other, special words of love, their own special love language. I am not sure when it was started or who said it first, but my husband and I had a phrase that we used and said to each other everyday. Although it has been over 10 years since my husband past away, I can still hear his sweet voice say those special words to me, "Did I tell you that I love you today". These words said "I love you" his way, my way, our way. Just writing these words today chokes in my throat and tears my eyes. We did say "I love you", but our special phrase - "Did I tell you that I love your today", said I love you deep from within my heart, I thank you for loving me. Our saying had a deeper meaning, it meant "I love you today, more today than yesterday, and I will love you more tomorrow and I will love you for always. Our saying was special, it was ours, it was purposeful, I love you today, especially today, on purpose today, irrevocably today. Although...

The danger in judging one another
Posted by:  blessings2you   (Posted: 06/15/2009 2:44am)
Last fall, we paid our “neighbors” (they live nearly ¾ mile from us) to cut, bale and put up in the barn over 250 bales of hay. The father and four sons did all the work and they were done in a couple of hours. The point of telling you this is that the four sons were not teenagers they were unmarried grown men who still lived at home with their parents and sisters. Down the road from us a couple of miles is a “family” that lives in a very nice brick ranch home surrounded by numerous farm buildings and silos. They own many hundred acres which they farm every year plus do the work for others who have land but no equipment. The three people who live there are two brothers and a sister who never married and are in their 70’s. The stark comparison between the two “neighbors” never ceases to amaze me. One is a good Catholic family with I believe a total of 8 children and the other a good Methodist family made of three siblings who never married but remained together their whole lives. I don’t know if religious affiliation has anything to do...

Second space is where we spend the most time
Posted by:  bunfil1   (Posted: 06/14/2009 8:27pm)
Recently at my church my pastor has been speaking on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd space of christians. The first space represents church. The second space represents our daily life. This is where we spend the majority of our time i.e. work, home, various stores, almost everywhere that we function in our daily lives outside of the church. The third space are by invitation only. For instance, being elected to a public office or being invited to eat with a public official. This is any place that you have to achieve something and then because of your achievement or accomplishment your are invited to this place. I had never really conceptualized our faith walk this way but it has really opened my eyes. In some ways it is opening my eyes to something I already knew (this happens a lot to me). We really participate in the first space for the sole purpose of strengthening ourselves for the second space. If we function well enough in the second space we might be invited into the third space, which is a place of high influence. Therefore, church should not be the focus of our christian faith. I think that it has...

Using Your Spiritual Gifts
Posted by:  retiredrev   (Posted: 06/14/2009 8:13pm)
In the New Testament of the Bible, you will find a book entitled “Timothy”. This is a letter which Paul the apostle wrote to a young man named Timothy. In the first few verses of the book, or letter to the young preacher, the apostle recalls the faithfulness of his mother Eunice and the faith which his grandmother, Lois, had also. And Paul was convinced that Timothy’s faith had come through their faithful witness. In chapter 1, verse 8, Paul addresses the young man. He wrote, “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands”. He further reminded Timothy that “. . . God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”. Throughout the remainder of the letter, the young preacher is encouraged and counseled how he was to carry out the ministry given to him. I find, in this text, a word to the wise of our generation. Paul wrote in the Romans letter, “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them . . .”(12:6). And...

It was me, my wife and a friend of ours. The plumber had came and left.We got my wife's aunt on the front porch.I stayed in the house and decorated. Imagine This
Posted by:  bubbavela   (Posted: 06/14/2009 7:08am)
Imagine this, waking in the morning with the subtle alarm of two cardinals flying overhead and as they buzz past your head the sweet smell of the gardens flowers tempt your senses to awaken for the day. You rise and gather your thoughts as you gaze upon those that you love still nestled in a deep and resting peace. You look to the clouds and praise God for yet another day in your castle you call home. Then out of no where comes the smell of the mornings breakfast being brought in by the loving hands of an angel of our Lord as he sets the food upon the table those young ones that God has given you finally awaken for their delightful early morning breaking of bread. As you eat you reach up to toward the heavens and say grace to our Lord for such a wonderful beginning of your day. Afterward you grasp the hand of your loved one and stroll barefooted down a street paved with gold till you reach a pond. Then you peer out on the peer and position yourself feet first into a pool of water that is more clear than the visions that...

I Won the Game
Posted by:  baldbeliever   (Posted: 06/14/2009 4:37am)
I Won The Game I sat there in the dugout waiting for a chance to play ball- a chance that I probably wouldn’t get considering that I was twelve and most of the other players were 14 or 15. There I was playing baseball for Edward’s Funeral Home, one of he better teams in East Cleveland. My brother, Jimmy, played firstbase and pitched some. We also had Bernard and Whitey and many more whose names I can’t recall. Well, there I sat while the coach was wandering around deciding who to put in to bat. He had changed some positions last inning and he had no one (at least of consequence) left to put in. It was the ninth inning and we were down by only one run, with two runners on base. Intense! Then it happened. The coach slowly turned and looked at me and then yelled little Yates, get in there. I gulped. I grabbed my bat and strolled to the batter’s box, trying hard not to catch the eye of any opponent or even of my own teammates, who were in shock at seeing me anywhere close to a bat. I looked at the pitcher and prayed...

Fitting The Pieces Together
Posted by:  kreynolds   (Posted: 06/13/2009 11:11pm)
Since February, 107 second graders have been working together on a clay tile project which shows the life cycle of butterflies. Earlier I posted a few pictures showing their progress. It is no easy task to get four classrooms who meet on different days during the week to create a single mural. The art teacher at my school is to be commended for her hard work! A portion of the mural is complete and ready to be attached to the wall this summer. Although it was started by the second grade class of 2008-2009, they will not complete it. That will be left up to the "new generation" of second graders. There may be even a "third generation" who will end up completing the work done last spring. Wow! This makes me think of so many things within the Body of Christ. First of all, we each have our own little piece. By itself, it is nearly impossible, if not impossible to see the complete picture. That's when we must trust the Master Designer (God) to lay each piece into it's proper place. Once that is done, we will see the entire picture. Although that final piece will not be...

well You know
Posted by:  bubbavela   (Posted: 06/13/2009 4:24pm)
It must have been awesome after You finished the creation of the world. i can only imagine how excited You were when You created adam and placed him in that garden. i remember handing over the keys to my son's first car to him. How happy he was and how good that made me feel. I wonder how excited adam was when you created eve? Was he as excited as i was that first time i fell in love? Walking with adam in the cool of the day must have been the best part of Your day. i'm sorry he had to take a bite from that stupid tree. It must have felt like a dagger was lodged in to Your gut when You heard what he had done. Of course You know how happy i am when i am with my boys and we are all gathered around enjoying the day.
