I stated in a small Baptist ministry where I got to know Jesus as my personal savior. I come from a large family. I was the only Christian in my home, 1981 I became the youth pastor in a small Pentecostal church. I had gone to a revival where a prophet spoke to me. I was laid hands on and I had a vision of Jesus. We were in a plane. Jesus showed me that this plane would be filled with the people I would minister to. From that day on I began to preach and hand out tracts. I started a small ministry where I supported the churches in the state of Pennsylvania. Years past on when I had to choose where I had to go. So I fasted with evangelist and missionaries I knew. I then...

Church Leadership Changes Revisited
Posted by:  john1010   (Posted: 09/11/07 11:24am)
I have been asked to update my blog about an abrupt change in leadership at our inner-city church. This church property - which we have been informed is an outreach of our mother church - has been operating continuously in this inner-city neighborhood for about 5 years. We have a food bank, a computer lab with 12 computers, a nice food kitchen for preparing hot meals, and lots of space for community meetings and job training. We have been having full-blown church services every Sunday for the past 2 years, in addition to the Kids Club Sunday afternoons and Youth Group on Wednesday evenings. Prior to the changes we have been having 100 or more for worship services, 100 to 150 kids 3-11 years old Sunday afternoon and 90-100 youth ages 12-20. At the time of my last blog, our Pastor of our main church, after much prayer, decided to release the Pastor of our inner-city church, leaving all of us hurt and not understanding what was happening. Some were hurt so badly that they have left the church membership altogether. Many of the kids were crying and angry. One of my favorite kids - a 13-year-old boy was left...

Sudden change in church leadership
Posted by:  john1010   (Posted: 08/22/07 9:40am)
Our church has been blessed. It started about 7 years ago as 13 members meeting at the Pastor's house. In a couple of months it grew to about 30 members, so they rented space from a Seventh Day Adventist church for Sunday meetings. When they grew to about 60 members (all within the first year) they asked a disbanding church what they were going to do with their property. There was a building and fellowship hall, and office/Sunday school space, a parking lot and some excess space. The disbanding church named a price which was way more than the new little church could afford. So they prayed. About 3 months later, they were contacted by a lawyer and they were offered the property free with no liens or mortgages. They accepted. Shortly thereafter, my wife and I joined this church which was about 2 years old. This was an inner city church and we ministered to about 50 young kids and a few of their parents. God continued to bless the church and so we were having two church services, a Saturday Kids Club and Wednesday Bible study and Youth Kids meeting in the fellowship hall. We were around 300...

Church frustrations
Posted by:  queenbee   (Posted: 06/13/07 10:23am)
Last night, I found myself in quite a grouchy mood because of a lack of organization within our church. For the past year, we have been serving here, and things were going well. They still are, by the way-- just a few things need tweaking. Right now our church is in transition- between two different sizes of churches and two different needed ways of doing things-- moving from a pastor-led size church to a program-led size church. We need (if we are to move forward) a central communications person- more than a secretary-- but more like a church wife. lol. Someone to make reminder calls, organize things, and basically keep the church on-track. Also someone to light a fire under people in the day-to-day. Yes, DH lights fires under people from the pulpit, but we need a person who will call and ask for a committment for this or that directly. Right now the church projects operate on the 'sign-up sheet' method-- and not surprisingly we end up not having enough volunteers sometimes. And the ones we do have often flake out on us. So it's frustrating. The church does not presently have a secretary, so spouse ends up taking...

An Encouragement for Pastors and Leaders
Posted by:  ericschall   (Posted: 05/27/07 7:11pm)
After being in full-time pastoral ministry for over 10 years I have become intimately familiar with one word: frustration. I know that there are some guys who are content to go somewhere and just love on the people and be content with that, but most men and women I know are visionary leaders that have responded to the call of God with passion and a sense of purpose. As I have posted recently in my blogs, I have been out in the wilderness for close to two years now, and God has given me fresh perspective along with a refreshing. I believe that pastors need to get back to a greater dependence on the Holy Spirit. Sounds overly simplistic and a bit naive doesn't it? As I wrote before, in doing the work and will of God we have a bridge to cross. On both sides are guide ropes to help us across. One side is human works where we flesh out our faith in things like responsibility, commitment, and even things like philosophy of ministry, and strategies. On the other side is the Sovereignty of God where we rely upon His blessing, direction, power and provision. If we try...

Help
Posted by:  batman   (Posted: 02/15/07 5:50pm)
I am a member of a small church and recently the pastor has announced the possibility of selling the Church. This is the first time I have faces this issue and really need help on this matter. I for one do not want to see the Church being sold and am not the only one that feels this way, however I am not aware of how this is done (the process of selling a Church) and what rights if any does the Church body have. I personally feel that the issue is not the Church building but the leadership in the Church any help on this is much appreciated. I am very upset over this whole situation and need guidance and answers. I have prayed about this and I do not feel God in the selling of this Church. Foster Children
Posted by:  michaelc   (Posted: 02/02/07 6:23pm)
The State placed two small children with our family some ten months ago. We receive no financial support from anyone for these children (a brother/sister 2 & 4 years old respectively). These children are the children of a couple who used to belong to the same local church as we do. They (the couple) "dedicated" their children to the Lord one Sunday morning when the 2yr old was an infant. The pastor asked the congregation to extend our hands (in prayer) if we agree to help this couple raise these children. Of course we all did. However, when "the wheels fell of the wagon" of this family, the members of my local church (for the most part) turned their backs. Dad was kicked out of the home for violence and mom hasn't had a clean drug screen in over two years. When mom was pregnant with the 4yr old she got drunk and ran over a pedestrian and killed him. The 4yr old was born in prison. When mom was released from prison the couple got married and then the 2yr old was born addicted to drugs. The family of this woman have "washed their hands" of her. The grandparents...

"You're Not Paid To Think
Posted by:  ericschall   (Posted: 01/15/07 7:55am)
I saw a story this morning on the news about the U.S. car industry. In it they interviewed a man who had been working at a GM plant for 20+ years. When he first started and he would bring up an issue he was told "You're not paid to think, you're paid to do." He also said that on the line you just put the part in whether or not it looked ok or not. In contrast, a woman working in a Toyota plant said that the management was always open to suggestions, ideas, ways to make things better. And they're ideas were often implemented. If you have followed the news at all the last few years you have heard reports of how GM and other U.S. car manufacturers have been losing billions. It didn't happen all of a sudden. Quietly for decades now the Japanese underdogs have been building affordable quality cars and have built a reputation. GM on the other hand grew complacent and lazy. My point in all this...of course this is a parallel for many churches. I travel every week about an hour to go to church. Why? Because they do it right in my opinion....

last night on TBN
Posted by:  gratefulheart   (Posted: 12/05/06 12:12pm)
So last night, I was flipping through the channels and happened upon TBN's Praise the Lord program. PRP was preaching, and turns out it was a MHV service that TBN agreed to televise. Honestly, having worked for PRP before and seeing the business side of the ministry, I tend to stay away from his program anymore. I tend to get really cynical of him, the ministry there, ministry in general, etc. when I watch and remember the business side of things (not that anything was done illegally, but sometimes it's better to just see a ministry far off rather than so close that you see all the imperfections). Anyway, I started watching this service, and let me tell you, it was an AWESOME service! I knew some of the people that were testifying and it was so great to see the way God is moving in their live and in so many other lives. One of the things RP discussed was the morality (or lack thereof) of our young people today. He said in his parents' generation, the percentage of that generation who had Biblically-based morals was 65%. His generation dropped down to 35%. His daughter's generation (17-19yr olds) has...

Preparing to Build Your Church
Posted by:  stevea   (Posted: 12/01/06 6:54am)
As I review my first proof of my book "Preparing to Build" from the publisher, I am struck by by a couple of points. The first is that it seems a lot easier to write than to edit. The second is how fundamentally important proper preparation is. One of the things that went into this book, which is really the 2nd edition of my ebook expanded for print publication, was a clear explanation of how proper preparation lowers the cost of a building program while improving the general satisfaction of church with its building program. According to a recent the study, 33% of the churches conducted feasibility studies, which correlates closely to the 35% that considered the building process as "excellent", and the 40% that indicated the building program created no conflict in the church. Those churches improved their satisfaction and reduced or eliminated much of the conflict that often comes with a building program. One of the things that ended up being highlighted in the book was the fact the the church has the greatest amount of control at the least cost early in the planning process. The graphics showed how the cost of changes increased and control was...

Lowering the Cost of Church Building Design
Posted by:  stevea   (Posted: 11/08/06 8:07am)
Architectural design is a significant cost item in church construction. Learn two strategies that can help you reduce the cost of your church building program and increase overall satisfaction. Strategy #1 - Understanding Needs and Ability Many churches can attest to the reports of churches that have had to throw away architectural church plans because the church cannot afford to build what the architect drew. Each year millions of dollars of church plans are thrown away or tossed into a closet because the church cannot build the plans they were provided. What can the church afford to build? First and foremost your church needs to understand what it can afford to build and how it will pay for the project. Jesus Himself used this very issue as an example when He talked about counting the cost of discipleship. A beginning point for determining a church building budget is a pretty simple formula. It is the money the church has on hand, plus the money it can borrow, plus any money it can raise from the sale of assets, plus the money it can raise between now and start of construction, minus any current long term debt. The biggest variable in...

Seeker Friendly or Compromised Gospel
Posted by:  greybear   (Posted: 10/26/06 12:11pm)
Brothers and Sisters in Christ, When I hear people use the term "seeker friendly" it has a tendency to make me cringe. Typically I see congregations talking less about God and more about the current world topics. Music is less about setting a mood of reverence and more about a multi-media entertainment process. Sin is called error, or our failure to do as well as expected. God's word in the sermon is replaced with our own non-offensive stories. A place of worship must be an attractive multi-million dollar social status symbol to lure them in. Our youth groups become dating circles and youth minsters are buddies in leu of Leaders. We begin to teach our youth about the world rather than laying a foundation in His word. When you talk about being seeker friendly, what exactly does that mean? I ask this in all earnest as this is the phrase I hear the leaders in my own church using more and more each week. When I look at it, it all just looks like compromise to get "the numbers up" and little of it points to sharing the gospel as it was given to us. To me it looks like...

Common Mistakes in Church Construction
Posted by:  stevea   (Posted: 10/24/06 2:27pm)
Talking with hundreds of churches in building programs allows a church building consultant to develop a unique view; to realize the wisdom in Ecclesiastes when the author says, "there is nothing new under the sun." While each church's challenges may seem unique to it, the reality is most churches face variations of the same challenges; and many make the same general mistakes simply because they don't know any better. Church building projects cost hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. Mistakes can have serious financial consequences. Mistakes in a building program can be very costly, not only in terms of money, but also with respect to functionality of the finished facility, loss of confidence in leadership, and unity in the body of Christ. A large portion of mistakes made by churches can be summarized into a single category - failure to properly plan. The church often creates a vision committee or long-range planning committee and tasks it to present a plan to the congregation. Regretfully, even the best intentioned of committees generally do not have the experience to plan and execute a building program in a manner that best meets the needs and budget of the church. Nothing against our...

2006 Lay Leadership Summit
Posted by:  abelajohnb   (Posted: 09/29/06 2:46am)
2006 Lay Leadership Summit Last year I received a phone call from a fellow asking me if I'd be interested at speaking at a conference/summit designed for church lay leaders. At first I was surprised at the invitation and after learning more about it, I eagerly decided to accept the invitation to speak -- and had a wonderful time doing so! This year I have once again been asked to speak at the 2006 Lay Leadership Summit for which I am both honored and excited! The Lay Leadership Summit is the largest gathering of Spirit filled lay leaders in the United States and serves as a dynamic one-stop leadership development resource for both pastors and lay leaders! This years summit is on October 13th and 14 and located at Capital Christian Center in Sacramento, California. This year they will have nearly 200 break out sessions and four general sessions, and has something for everyone in ministry! This year's featured general-session speakers will be: - Focus on the Family's H.B. London - Willow Creek's Greg Bowman - Vertical Record's Lincoln Brewster leading worship - Pastor and author Gene Roncone - Radiant Life's Clancy Hayes (sorry clancy, I couldn't find your website)...

Kirk of the Hills
Posted by:  greybear   (Posted: 09/11/06 4:05pm)
This was the biggest church to support the boys home I worked at in Hugo, OK. It will be interesting to see what the stand of the boys home will be in leu of their major source of support leaving the denomination. The home is indirectly run/managed by Presbytery USA. Presbyterians: Congregation Decides: Kirk of the Hills votes to leave denomination By BILL SHERMAN World Religion Writer 8/31/2006 Members cheer after overwhelmingly voting to affiliate with a more conservative group. Members of Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian rose to their feet and cheered, whistled and clapped for nearly a minute Wednesday evening when it was announced that they had overwhelmingly endorsed their church leaders' decision to leave the Presbyterian Church (USA). In a crowded, members-only, congregational meeting held in the church sanctuary at 4102 E. 61st St., the congregation voted to approve three separate measures: ratifying and confirming the decision to disaffiliate from the PC (USA); approving the congregation's affiliation with the more conservative Evangelical Presbyterian Church; and affirming the ordination of Kirk pastors Tom Gray and Wayne Hardy, who have resigned as PC (USA) ministers. Sexual Offenders: Their Risk To And In Your Church
Posted by:  abelajohnb   (Posted: 02/12/06 11:46pm)
Sexual Offenders - Their Risk To And In Your Church Consider the average size community, what percentage of the population do you think make up convicted sex offenders. You might be surprised if you do your homework. In one Northern California community there are between 30 and 40 convicted sexual offenders within a 2-mile radius. A community with over two dozen places of worship. If that doesn't surprise you, perhaps this will. The average urban church has one dozen convicted sexual offenders within a one mile radius of its property. Consider that nearly one in every ten churches has a convicted sexual offender within its membership, often unknown to its member and the pastoral staff. Consider that while most sexual offenders are required by law - in most states - to register as a sexual offender, they are not required by law to notify anybody else. Not nearby schools, not their employers, not nearby churches. Consider, despite how scary it may be, how often a sexual offender walks in front of your church on a weekly basis while the children are outside having a good time. These are all unfortunate considerations that we in ministry need to be aware of,...

Pastoral Salaries - Or The Lack Thereof
Posted by:  abelajohnb   (Posted: 01/31/06 7:07am)
Pastoral Salaries - Or The Lack Thereof I am going to walk a 'fine line' in writing about this issue (both from a private policy issue, and the fact that people never like to talk about money) but none the less, this is an issue I feel we NEED to discuss! There has been a lot of internet chatter recently about the lowering of pastoral salaries over the last 10 years - or more correctly, the failure to increase salaries as expected and done in every other line of work. From The Churches Point Of View: What I have done is taken the last 106 Open Positions listed at the 'Assemblies of God Jobs Online' website and averaged them out in order to discover the average salary that pastors are making on a monthly/yearly basis. Based upon the last 106 posted Open Positions, on a monthly basis an average North American Assemblies of God minister is going to make: $2184.08 - which works out to $26,208.96 per year. Now, before you go and say "wow, most be a lot of small churches posting jobs!", I can share with you that one very predominate church we have had join and list...

Pumping Up The Music For Jesus, Hip-Hop Style
Posted by:  abelajohnb   (Posted: 01/08/06 4:19am)
Today ChristiansReport.Com posted an article entitled Pumping Up The Music For Jesus, Hip-Hop Style that I read and thought I would comment on. Some Good Comments The majority of the article was of little or no interest to me, however toward the end of the article there were a couple of statements that made me go 'Amen Brother!' Here is the first one: Says Redeemer's pastor, Kelly Chatman: "Young people are not coming to church to hear classical music like they did when I was young.... Hip-hop is simply the vernacular of a culture that the church should be reaching out to." Amen Brother! Way to many churches today are hung-up on the past - and refusing to even entertain what the "next generations" need to find comfort and "a place" within the walls of a church. I am convinced that the next 10 years is going to see a massive closer of churches across America - simply because all the old people have died and gone to heave, and the next generation was never ministered too, and thus, are not in church! As I said in a previous Blog entry I entitled "Worshiping Outside the Traditional Church Walls": Change...

TBN Entertaining Lucifer
Posted by:  yokhannan   (Posted: 01/07/06 12:16pm)
Anybody who watches TBN TV, or any of their affiliated programs should be aware of their recent decisions to entertain Lucifer. In November of 2005 TBN Suspended Hal Lindsey from their network. You can read Hal Lindsey's "Urgent Personal Message" to catch up on things if you are not familiar with this whole issue. For those of you who are not aware of this issue, I'll briefly quote some points from his message: The International Intelligence Briefing has been removed from the air on TBN for the entire month of December (and perhaps never to be broadcast again?). Some at the network apparently feel that my message is too pro-Israel and too anti-Muslim. The feeling must be that honestly reporting news on current issues concerning radical Islam is thwarting evangelism to Muslims at large, particularly Palestinians. I personally believe that both Christian Palestinians and moderate Muslims - who are being intimidated and persecuted by the radicals - actually welcome honest reporting on the situation. I can't understand how any Christian that is aware of the dangers radical Islam poses to our nation, Christians worldwide and the nation of Israel can issue a mandate to soft-pedal the truth about it. Make...

Pentacostalists To Mark Centennial
Posted by:  abelajohnb   (Posted: 01/02/06 9:57am)
The Washington Times did an article about this year marking the 100th anniversary of the Los Angeles-based revival that emerged to become one of the 20th century's most significant religious events.... The Azusa Street Revival. In doing some research on this, earlier this morning, I came across to interesting online articles about it. The first is "William J. Seymour and the Azusa Street Revival" was written by Gary B. McGee Ph.D., a professor of church history at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, Springfield, Missouri. This article has a fair amount of photographs of some of the "early days" and goes into details of The Welsh Revival, details a fair amount of information about William J. Seymour, and at the very end of the 4-page article is a photograph of some of early leaders of the Azusa Street Mission, dated 1907. The second article is from wikipedia, and perhaps the most interesting point that is brings out is this Azusa's "five-fold doctrine". Azusa's "five-fold doctrine" was: salvation; sanctification or holiness; tongues as evidence of Spirit baptism; divine healing; the "very soon" return of Christ. Anyway, I've been planning to try to make it to the...
