I don't know how long it has been that I've felt I should do a 40 day fast, but if you had told me I would EVER make it past 7 days (the most I've ever done, and have done several times!) on a liquid fast, I would have laughed. Not anymore! I mean, day 13! Wow! It's all God, that's for sure! I still don't know if I will go for the full 40 days, but I know I'm gonna put my best effort into trying! But it's gonna be all God, that's for sure.
This morning, what with the time change yesterday and just coming back from Africa (6hr time difference, and too many connecting flights) a couple weeks before, I've been having a hard time with sleep. Either I wake before the sun is up. Or I toss and turn all night. Or I wake at 3 or 4 in the morning and can't fall back to sleep till the sun has risen! So when my sleep finally got a pattern and was working--for the most part--I was happy. Then Sunday messed that all up with the time change. And the fast, having a side-affect of sleeping...

The Pasty, an Upper Michigan tradition |

The Pasty, an Upper Michigan tradition
History of the Pasty:
The copper and iron ore seams running trough Michigan's Upper Peninsula soil helped to bring prosperity and diversity to Upper Michigan. More importantly, it brought the PASTY.
As the mines along Lake Superior were coming to life, the mines in Cornwell, England were drying up. So the Cornish miners brought their skills, tools and blasting powder across the ocean to the Michigan mines. And for lunch they brought the Pasty.
A cold sandwich just didn't cut it in the cold Upper Michigan or an underground mine. The meat, potato and rutabaga turnover made a portable yet substantial meal that could be easily wrapped in a clean towel, placed on a shovel and heated over a flame. It could also be picked up and eaten with the hands, no plates or forks needed.
When I first married my husband, he told me of this Pasty. I had never had one, or even heard of them. I never made them the way his mother did. She passed away in 1967 and we married in 1972. I never had the benefit of her counsel. Then my sister-in-law told me that no one made...

Kingdom cooking - Home Made Pasta Sauce |

(Posted: 08/11/07 6:48am)
This will be one of the last recipes I post. I would seem like it is all I think about, but it really is not.
I truly believe there is a large move of the Holy Spirit to inform people that they are being killed by todays pre-made foods. More and more I am hearing the same concern from people around me, and mostly from Christians.
Our health is very important to God. The Devil comes to kill and destroy. We are God's creation, and He created us to have life abundantly. Satan would have us sick and dying, and therefore ineffective to God's Kingdom, while those who do not know Jesus as their saviour are going to hell even faster.
I have taken on learning how to cook to try to save myself and my family from this physical attack. We as a nation have learned to trust the products available to us in the supermarkets and have become addicted to them. Even those items which would seem healthy are laced with substances that would be considered poison by themselves.
This is my recipe for Tomato pasta sauce, which can be used for various meals, and will please even...

Kingdom Cooking - BLAZING SADDLES CHILI |

(Posted: 08/01/07 4:28pm)
BLAZING SADDLES
4 BEAN & PEPPER VEGETARIAN CHILI
Another easy but healthy recipe. This is for those of you who like a little fire in your food. A missionary friend of mine in Mexico once told me that the difference between hot food and bland food, is like the difference between being saved, and being filled with the Spirit.
I do not put any meat at all into this one. Meat changes the flavor, and tends to overtake the chili a bit, plus it cools the heat.
Enjoy, but be cautious if you are not used to real 'life' in your food, in the form of schoville units.
Use fresh, locally grown, or organic ingredients wherever possible.
1 Lg can baked beans
1 can black frijole beans
1 can dark red kidney beans
1 can light red kidney beans
1 Lg can crushed tomatoes
1 Sm can tomato sauce
1 Sm. can tomato paste
1 onion diced
2 to 3 Garlic cloves, chopped fine
1 fresh Hungarian Pepper (or equivalent) chopped fine
8-10 fresh chopped Jalopeno's chopped fine
1 or 2 fresh chopped Habenero Peppers (also known as Scotch Bonnets) Depending on how hot you like it, add a few...

Kingdom Cooking - Indian Curry |

(Posted: 07/30/07 2:27am)
I hope these recipes for healthier cooking are interesting to someone. I only have a few more that I have worked on, but would like to see them posted so others can benefit if they so desire.
The herbs and spices in Indian curry have many healing qualities, including Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant properties, joint and arthritis aids, as well as aiding in digestion, wound recovery, liver protection, heart tonic, asthma, dermatitis, and impotence. Helps acid indigestion, neuralgia, rheumatism, and helps eliminate harmful metals from the body including mercury, lead, and cadmium. Contains natural chemicals that kill bacteria, helps control body odor, and treats indigestion and excess gas. These are just some of the known benefits.
Takes about 2 hours
Use free-range meat, wild caught fish, and organic, locally grown produce. Fresh herbs and spices make a big difference in the outcome over dried varieties, but both work.
Main ingredient -
Lamb or Goat in bite size pieces. (Any red meat will work, but these two are particularly good)
Fish - White fish filets (Striped Bass, Tilapia, and Flounder are good choices)
Prawns/Shrimp - raw, shelled
Curry ingredients -
1-2 Onions diced up fine (Vidalia Onions are good, but any kind...

Kingdom Cooking - sloppy Joe's |

(Posted: 07/26/07 1:19pm)
Ideally a complete diet of raw, organic, locally grown vegetables and fruits, along with grass fed free range meat, wild caught fish, whole grains and quality oils is the way to go for your health.
That is not always a practical solution for many folks, and my heart has been to learn practical ways to move towards the perfection in Christ we desire to attain.
My little book "Withstanding the Storm" addresses spiritual and natural attitudes and modes of operation in this same way - simple and do-able.
I am posting some recipes that I have learned that help me (and others) to first of all get away from pre-packaged, boxed, canned, or bagged foods, sauces, marinades, and other conveniences.
Start this way by cutting out the pre-made stuff, and then keep moving towards more complete healthier living for yourself and your family.
This is my recipe for Sloppy Joe's, one of the staples that our kids love. There are no preservatives, corn syrups, nitrates or nitrites in this, and it is VERY easy to make. Even if your recipe is a little different, it will come out pretty much the same.
My wife, who does not even like sloppy...

Healthy Bread Recipe |

(Posted: 07/26/07 5:14am)
Hey, I am going to add to goodnews and post some healthy recipes myself. One of the very first changes I made in the way of healthy eating was to bake my own bread, with wholesome ingredients. This is generally a staple in most households. And a big area to initiate changes. Now, 100% whole wheat, or other wholegrain bread is ALWAYS best, but can take some getting used to for those who are accustomed to white bread. You can start out with an unbleached, unbromated white flour and add a little whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup to a cup and as the palette accepts this slowly increase the amounts of whole wheat. These are my two recipes of bread that I make and even sold at the farmer's market. These are both bread machine recipes but can be adapted to be made the traditional way or a Kitchen Aid. Now, I used the bread maker ONLY to mix the ingredients on a dough only setting but baked it in the oven. The bread turns out so much better this way!
100% Whole Wheat Bread
Add ingredients in order to bread machine:
1 1/4 cups warm water
2 TB olive...

Outdoor Country Stew
I was asked to post what I was having for dinner tonight.... so, here it is... I call it "Outdoor Country Stew" and it may work it's way into my final menu selection... it just needs some more tweaking.
This is a hearty dish that will have folks coming back for more! With very little spices it can be served up for almost anybody, yet it has enough unique flavor to keep those spiceaholics guessing.
Like most of my dishes it takes 4+ hours from prep to dish.
This is fast becoming my second most demanded dish; second only to my previously posted Slow Cooked Balsamic Beef Stew, which takes considerable more time to make than this dish does.
Should anybody try it, I would welcome feedback.
Ingredients:
10 cups water
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 Tablespoon Red Wine Vinegar
1/2 Teaspoon Sea Salt
7 red potatoes
3 boxes, Rice A Roni (Mexican Style)
1 leek, chopped fine *1*
3 pounds ground buffalo *2
3 pounds chopped pork chops, Prime Grade
Instructions:
Place water, sugar and vinegar in a 6-1/2-quart (or bigger) slow cooker. Turn on high and bring to a near boil. Stir occasionally.
Add sliced...

There are a couple of blogs about healthy eating on the site recently. I have a three-part post of my own, and most recently 'Allforhim' has a post involving her mother's fight with cancer. I feel the urging to start a recipe post for healthier eating.
To give a quick run-down of my qualifications, I have NONE. I am no chef by any stretch of the imagination. I was a bachelor for many years, and not adept in the kitchen at all. I was at the mercy of the supermarkets (pre-packaged food industry).
The Lord has been prompting me the last few years to treat my body better or my own sake, and to research what is going on in this fallen world we live in. The deception of our enemy infiltrates areas we do not even think of.
I would like to post some recipes that will start folks on the road to doing it themselves instead of buying the prepared, preserved, convenient forms of food we see in the supermarkets (that includes the healthy alternative, very expensive organic ones, which not all of us can afford!)
I have been learning how to prepare some basic food using God's...

Grandpa's Green Chile stew |

 |
Posted by:

(Posted: 06/11/07 3:11pm)
Okay, after a little pressure, and a lot of procrastination, certain people have won.
Here is my Camp Stew/Green Chili Stew recipe:
1 lb. course cut Chili meat
1 small Pork roast
2-3 cans whole green chili's (You can use the chopped or diced ones, but the results won't be as good). Do Not Drain liguid from cans.
1/4 Onion-use 1/2 onion if you can get the Sweet Onions.
2 Med. size Potatos
1 Tsp. Chili Powder
1/2 Tsp. cumin
1 Pkg. Flour Tortillas.
Take Pork roast and dice it to the size of the chili meat, (about bite size),
Trim excess fat off the chili meat and seare all the meat on all sides. this locks in the different flavors for now. If you are in a hurry, you can sprinkle the meat with meat tenderizer before you sear it.
Put all the meat in a large pot and fill with water, bring to a boil for about 10-15 min
Slice all of the Green Chilis to about 1 inch-generally 4 slices per chili.
Let the meat simmer on med. heat while you are preparing the chilis, etc.
Pour all of the liquid from the chili cans into the...

Struggles with weight |

Hey there!
I know it's been a while since I've posted anything, but I decided to share my ongoing struggle to get my weight under control. I've struggled with my weight ever since high school. I've done so may different diets over the years and have also done my share of yo-yoing. The only plan that worked successfully for me was a low-carb lifestyle, (where I was able to lose 67 pounds back in 2002) however, once I developed a thyroid condition, I now have other symptoms when I'm about 1 ½ - 2 weeks into the low-carb way of eating, so I abandon it - and then gain back some weight again.
I have made an appt with an endocrinologist (in 2 weeks) to help determine what's going on. In order for her to help me, I'm starting the low-carb plan again today, so that when I see her, I'll be symptomatic again ... so she can see what's happening, and hopefully help me.
Anyone who has struggled with his or her weight knows just how difficult it is ... and it truly is a life-long struggle. Even if I finally get to a healthy weight, I know it...

Chicken (I use white meat but I can't type the chicken part because it's censored!)
1 cup of honey
1/2 stick of butter (melted)
Italian bread crumbs
Mozerella and Cheddar slices
-
Season your chicken with salt and pepper. Mix the honey and melted butter together in a bowl. Pour the bread crumbs in another. Dredge the chicken in the honey and butter mixture and then cover the chicken in the breadcrumbs completely.
Place in a glass 13x9 pan that is sprayed liberally with cooking spray.
Cook 35-40 minutes or until chicken is done.
Turn oven off. Place a slice of each cheese on each piece of chicken and place back in oven until cheese melts.
Enjoy!
I serve this with rice and a veggie. Usually some sort of bread too. It's very tasty....

This is a very quick home meal that is really good!
Ground chuck
Sloppy Joe Mix (the kind in a can)
Crescent rolls
Ok I dont have exact measurements for the ingredients because it's one of those recipes that you have to "eyeball" to get right!
Make the sloppy joe's as normal, in the amount you want.
In a 13x9 inch pan, spray the bottom with some non-stick spray and then press a can of crescent rolls along the bottom to cover it. (Don't make the cresce...

So much has been going on since I was here last. One thing / like many places we have had a big snow storm. Since my husband has had a heart attack he can no longer shovel. Our snow blower died and there is no money for a new one so we have to wait for the "Kindness of Strangers" to come and help us dig out. There is still a 4 foot snow wall outside our back door waiting for sunshine and rain to melt it down some.
We had sunshine today and it does give the illusion of spring coming. February and March can be brutal here - HOWEVER - two days ago I saw a Robin in the back yard - and that can be a real sign of spring!

I do not have much to say tonight. I think I have broken all the rules at ChristianBlog.Com so my days here may be numbered. I think I am not suppose to use links - yet I did want to tell everyone about crayola.com because it is free and offers so many things. I am not suppose to use the same Blog here as I do at other Blogs; yet if I do a devotion here - I do use the same devotion at my-space because putting together a recipe, tips, jokes, devotion, Bible verse take up lots of time, so for me I use the some for all the three groups I write to. I put it together, I do not steal it, but I still think it is against the rules.
Anyway - here is an EASY PEACH COBBLER: 1 Large Can sliced Peaches with Juice; 1 Large Package Peach Jello; 1 Yellow Cake Mix; 1 Stick Butter, cut up; 1 1/2 Cup Water. Holy Cow Cake
1 German Chocolate Cake Mix; 1 Can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk; 1 jar Carmel topping; 1 Carton Cool Whip ; 2 Regular size Butterfinger Candy Bars, Crushed.
Make cake according to direction on the box. Using a 9X13 inch pan. After removed from the oven but still warm poke a few holes in cake & pour condensed milk over the cake. After the cake cools, pour caramel topping over the cake. Spread Cool Whip on top, then sprinkle with the crushed Butterfinger candy bars. (A Butter finger candy bar is a chocolate covered, crunchy, with a peanut butter taste candy bar.)Be sure to keep the cake refrigerated. Enjoy.
Be Sure to use extra moistureisure this time of year. The dry heat of the furnace, the harsh wind, and even the sun reflection off the snow can take a toll on your skin. I heard some one on TV say that once a week they put a thin coat of vaseline on their skin - head to toe. I wonder if it works as well as olive oil?

First I have a question - have found your verse for 2007? I have not yet, but I think I will before the end of the month. Also, do you know the shortest verse of the Bible? It is John 11:35 "Jesus Wept". When you have the time - read from about verse one to about vers 43; then tell me why you think Jesus wept. For those of you who know me, you know I have my own opinion which I will share later so I do not influence you. I do not think any answer is wrong - as the Bible does not really tell us.
I spoke to Debbie Hutslar (Debbie I am sorry if I missed spelled your name) and she said she will finish school in March. So please keep her in your prayers as she works a full time job; goes to school, and takes care of her family.
I have a recipe you might enjoy: All Day Stew
2 lbs stew meat cut into bite size pieces; 3 lg potatoes, diced; 3 lg ribs of celery, diced; 3 to 4 lg carrots, diced; one onion (your favorite kind); 1 12oz can of tomato...

Good morning! Not exactly recovered from the game last night. Won't really comment. Still love the Buckeyes.
College football is over. Done until next season.
Next is the Super Bowl. Since my Broncos are out and the Browns...well...they never had a chance...I am rooting for the Patriots. They are my #3 favorite team. Almost afraid to root for them. Maybe I'm the jinx!
I sure could use some coffee today. I didn't stop and get my favorite English toffee cappucino.
Marina is having a slumber party on Friday night, so that is the next thing I need to prepare for. She wants to have meatball subs. She also has a list of other food she would like to have. Oh movies...can't forget them.
Let's see...a good recipe for today? These are yummy!
Heavenly Hashbrowns
1 (32 oz) bag frozen hashbrown cubes-thawed
1 Stick butter-melted
1 Can Cream of Mushroom Soup
1 Pt. Sour Cream
1/2 C. Diced onion
2 C. Shredded cheddar cheese
Something for topping-see below
Mix all ingredients together and put in greased 9x13 pan. Top with crushed Rice Chex or Special K or some such crunchies. Even almonds or stuffing mix. No specific amount-just crush one up...

Good morning! I have used another blog site in the past, but that might I decided to try to find a Christian site. I searched and found this one.
Tonight is the BIG GAME! GO BUCKEYES! We love the Buckeyes here and can't wait to watch the BCS Championship Game. The kids are normally in bed about 9 PM, so this will be a late night. I know at least Isaac will stay up until the end. Mom joked this morning that school should be cancelled tomorrow. Not a bad idea...we certainly haven't used any calamity days! I am thankful that Isaac's wrestling practice for this evening was postponed until tomorrow evening.
I am ready for the snack portion of the football evening! I am making Poutine (a Canadian favorite), those little sausages in sauce, pizza, mozzarella cheese sticks...that is surely more than enough, but you never know what else I'll come up with. Oh yeah...peanut butter no-bake cookies...may may chocolate, too...and a pie called Mile-High Apple Pie.
After rereading that...I think that's too much already...we don't need anything else! And of course, this is all so healthy!
I always like to include a recipe in each entry, so today...

For the past 5 months (19 1/2 weeks) I have been following an eating program (not saying which plan). For the most part it is fairly easy and I've been very successful - my goal is to reach a loss of 93lbs and I have lost 39.8 lbs so far (as of Wed, Aug 23)..almost 1/2 way with a couple weeks to the 1/2 mark in time as well...however, on days like today, I almost just want to quit. I have to prepare seperate meals for myself and it can make life much more difficult for us to eat as a family and temptations are VERY difficult. Having a screaming headache makes it even worse but it's not my family's fault they can eat differently, however, it would be nice if they would try to eat more of the selections I can have. Sometimes, I think they support me as long as it doesn't effect them. The joke is the as I lose the weight, my husband is finding it...basically cause he is not eating regular meals and did alot of fast food this summer with the youth group and now with being in his classroom so early, heisn't planning...

Beet or Beef?
In listening to Genesis on the way back and forth to work, I ran across the fact that God had originally gave Adam and Eve the plants as food and that it wasn't until after Noah and the flood that permission was given, by God, to eat the animals as food. Up to the end of the flood, the animals, I assume, were only kept for sacrificial purposes. Probably not a big revelation to some, but for me it was one of those details I just finally "heard". 1 pound beef stew meat (tender is not necessary!)
3 cans stewed tomatoes (preferably the stewed with spices)
6 red potatoes
4 carrots
