Learning Agape Leadership - Session 3: The P's of Growth
We have been looking at spiritual growth - growing in love and truth. We have looked at two of the dynamic elements of growing spiritually - the necessary involvement of the Holy Spirit, and the necessary consistency in the Word. These two are requisite for growth.
A refresher - why do we need to continually seek growth? Because, as one author puts it, "people always tend to slide backwards. That's why continued pressure is needed to make changes stick."
The pursuit of growth needs to become a habit to help fight against the human tendency to backslide. This is as true spiritually as it is in any other arena.
So we need to push forward in pursuing growth.
There are a couple of other elements in addition to the work of the Holy Spirit and consistency in the Word (- the M's - marinate, meditate, memorize) that are a part of growth and can help us.
These are the "P's" of spiritual growth.
These P's are Passion, Patience, Persistence and Prayer
Passion is a powerful element that many people overlook.
Most people have passion - but it is misapplied. Where...

Loving God through the Mundane |

(Posted: 07/02/08 3:47am)
I have been put on a hiatus, not by me, but God. Life lately, has been busy, full of all the mundane things that life holds. No great spiritual insights, no great things for God, just the ins and outs of daily life. I have been literally exhausted in all aspects of the word. It was so nice to be finished with school, so nice to devote my time and attention to the garden and cleaning this house down to every nook and cranny. Amidst all this my spiritual life has been weakened. My time with God has been little, except for prayers lifted up to Him and some looking up of Scriptures. I missed church because the kids were sick, so I am feeling kind of empty. In need of a refreshing, in need of some just me & God time.
How does one maintain a healthy relationship with God through all the mundane? Through sickness and busyness? I have let things kind of slide and I am just feeling dull. I suppose this sickness has something to do with it. We have some weird stomach thing going on and we are trying to determine if it is a...

superficiality is the curse of this age |

(Posted: 07/01/08 8:20am)
God needs to remove all that is superficial, religious, shallow, and phony in our lives. The Lord must remove every outward mask from our lives. The Holy Spirit's digging work in our lives is inescapable and the Holy Spirit does not want to leave any thing undone. He wants to remove everything that is in the way. He will dig and dig into the depths of our lives until all the digging work is complete. The time has come when all that is untrue and unrealistic must be removed. Everything that is outward, superficial or having some kind of a religious mask in our lives has to be removed. This work is not easy. It is not going to be easy. God desires to get to something real and solid into our lives. God will not thrust Himself upon us, or steamroll His will upon any one of us. Our cooperation and willingness is a necessary precondition for His work upon our lives. He will work upon us only if we allow Him to do so. But if we ask Him to work upon us, then He will get into the details of our individual lives and set us right....

I am profoundly drawn to the story of Lazarus. The man that Jesus brought back from the dead. The story of Lazarus unfolds in the book of John, chapter 11, verses 1 thru 44. We are told that Lazarus was in Bethany and he was extremely ill. His sisters, Mary and Martha had sent a messenger to Jesus to tell him that his friend is very sick. Now, Mary and Martha had believed that Jesus could heal their brother of this sickness. They had faith in Jesus and believed in a miracle. They also had faith that Jesus would not turn his back on his friend in his dire time of need. Imagine their reactions when they heard what Jesus had to say.
When Jesus was told of the situation, his words were stunning. He said that Lazarus's sickness was not unto death. It was a sickness that would reveal God's glory through the Son of God. Jesus had stayed where he was for two days before leaving for the trip back to Judea. It goes on to show how it took another four days for Jesus to get there since when he arrived Lazarus was in the ground for...

Satan never takes a day off! EVER! gosh.. how i wish he would. just go enjoy the 4th of July, rest, relax. quit bothering me so much. hahaha. Well if he's not gonna take a day off is it to much to ask for a warning? just a little post-it? Just tell me to get prayed up because you're coming. is that to much to ask? haha. i guess so.
I shared in my last post how Satan is under God's authority. The devil must get permission from the Lord to inflict us with anything. Nothing surprises God, nothing happens that he doesn't already know about. God is in complete control of everything around us. He loves us and everything that comes into our lives is under his control. EVERYTHING. amazing. God is so omnipresent that he is above my situation, he is over my circumstances. He is greater than all that. Thats gives me strength and courage to just give it to him and not worry about things. yeah right. much easier said than done. I like to hang on to things for awhile. Keep it in eye sight.. better make sure it doesn't get to far. I may...

Forgiveness, not so easy after all. |

Colossians 3:13 says "bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." It's incredible to me how easy I can hold a grudge...how easily I can remember something someone did that hurt me. It's even more incredible to me that Jesus forgave me for all of the innumerable things I did against him, and because He did that for me, I want t learn to TRULY forgive others. Having already finished middle school and y first year of high school, one could say that I have for sure had my share of drama....and by drama i'm talking the real-life immature hardcore ridiculously stupid teenage girl drama.I can't say that i've gotten into any physical catrights, but certain words have been said and things have been done that have had some pretty negative effects on others. Although most of it is over, there is one girl who really hurt me a while back. She'd been one of my best friends at a time and later ditched me to be with people she thought were i gess cooler, and funner than me knowing that they clearly did not like me, oddly...

Spiritual Intelligence Warning For Committed Christians |

Please be advised that I would not be posting this if I didn't feel it absolutely necessary in light of a multiplicity of current events going on in both the world and among the body of Christians.
****** ****** SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE WARNING****** ******
The devil is hereto with considered the "enemy" and his legions of principalities, powers and other authorities are hereto with considered his "forces" and those people who are his operatives are hereto with considered his "agents".
The secret to the enemy's success has always been and continues to be found in the secrecy of his moves. In any warfare, the key to successfully ambushing the opponent is found in being able to conduct a "surprise attack". One of the keys utilized in warfare of all kinds that enable the element of surprise is something called "disinformation". From Webster's College Dictionary here is its meaning:
DISINFORMATION-False and misleading information released by a government to media outlets.
The enemy briefs his forces on the plan. They then work through their agents in high positions of government, industry, education and religion to deliberately issue statements which are either entirely false or terribly misleading. This is called a diversionary tactic. Since...

The much needed growth of the church |

(Posted: 06/27/08 2:44am)
there is so much talk about growth and ministering. who has it right? does anybody know what it takes for the believer to grow, and also for the new believer to grow in Christ. this is thru the wisdom of Christ which is by His Spirit. the believer's heart must become one with his spirit when he has been saved. why? because our inner man is where Christ by His Spirit dwells. and if we are born of the Spirit now, we should also walk in the Spirit. what is one of the major reasons many believers leave the faith and join the new age movements and spiritual things outside of Christ? it is because of a lack of the supernatural. God is supernatural and the source of which all supernatural power exists. and if the believer would get this and grasp it he would beg God for the walk in the Spirit that has been offered to each believer in Christ Jesus. this can be dangerous if we don't allow the Spirit to guide us thru this process. i know first hand how detrimental it is to seek God and be brought into the supernatural in Christ without understanding...

I saw that I am still getting some comments on my last blog (wow that seems like a long time ago) and thought I might update on it since it has been a long time. Since that blog my husband and I have left that church. It was one of those decisions that was hard but easy, you know? It was easy because we realized we were getting comfortable in that place (my husband is a firm believer in you shouldn't be comfortable in your Christian walk) and also we had reached a level that we were going to be stuck at. We had grew as much as we could have there. This was all easy to recognize. The hard part was letting people know we were leaving not because of the difficulty we had had with people in the church (mainly the pastor and his entire family) but we were leaving because it was time for us to go elsewhere and grow for ourselves. It just seemed as if the timing was bad. And actually leaving that Sunday was hard because we didn't realize how homeless we felt. But God pulled us through and without skipping a beat we...

Okay, so any Christian of enough time would likely know that it has been said that we would be persecuted for our faith, right? Most of us know that sometime in our journey, we are bound to face a not-so-friendly situaton where we would be put down for making a statement about our faith, right? So due to the fact that we know ths, when the time comes that you DO make a statement are are put down for it, it won't hurt you at all, right? WRONG! Many people think that they're so strong and valiant that it won't hurt much to be put down because what they said or did was for their faith, and don't get me wrong, it's an awesome thing to be able to do that, but just because a person makes a statement for their faith, when and if the feedback isn't great, it doesn't mean that it wont hurt. It's unfortunate that many people can't take comments about Christianity well, but it is true. Just the other day, a good friend of mind asked me if there was anyone special" at the moment and no, there isn't...Well no mere person anyways, but i...

"Every day we learn something new" How many times have you heard that one? Well, did it ever occur to people that sometimes reviewing those things we once learned could help them? It's funny, today (when I wrote this in my notebook) is the day before Father's Dayand as i was writing my dad his card, I mentioned about all that he's taught me over the years and i brought up a letter he wrote me when i was in 8th grade *[Background]8th grade wasn't my est year spiritually i turn messing up everything else that went on that year *I had just recently dme something really dumb that hurt him...it really hurt him, and never seen him so mad at me. I vividly remember the hurt i saw in his face when he found out what Id done. What I'd done wasn't all that terrible but it violated his trust in me and THAT'S what was so bad about the whole thing. anyways, he wrote e a ltter later that day telling me about how choices and everything we do and say has an after effect and so i thouht I'd take a quick look over the letter again,...

I am beginning this after much hesitation. I was wondering should I write my thoughts, should I vocalise those small nudgings of the Lord in the inner man of the heart? The first few steps are faltering right!
I want to blog today a word that the Lord spoke to my heart, "If our Lord Jesus were on the earth, an entirely different way of things would obtain. Think about that. If He were on the earth, the same things would be happening as did happen when He was on the earth. Everybody who had aches and pains would be going after Him wherever He might be, if He were in Palestine or in any other part of the world, they would be going after Him with aches and pains to get these cleared up.
There would be people who would take all their temporal difficulties and troubles and situations to Him and all the problems of this life as here on the earth. And then the whole world situation, political and so on, to have this whole temporal realm of things dealt with, and it would resolve itself into a matter of Jesus constituting a temporal order. As they did then,...

Is God Truly Enough? |

Is God Truly Enough?
This is a question that I often ponder. On Friday we were at what our church calls "Growth Group." There is a man in our group who is really struggling with grief. His wife of 25 years passed away a year ago and he is still just grappling with sorrow. We were talking and he was talking about in Genesis when God created Eve, he created her because He said "That it is not good for man to be alone." If God is enough then why did He create Eve? Adam had all he could ever hope for, perfect relationship with the Father, an idyllic world all he ever needed or wanted was at his fingertips. Was it enough? Adam sought a helper suitable for him, but could not find one.
So God created woman out of man, does this mean that God was not enough? If we are single or have lost our spouse is God not enough?
As I thought back to the creation of woman, a new thought came to my mind. I have always heard the teaching that when God said it is not good for man to be alone, that it...

Finding Faith |

(Posted: 06/09/08 11:14am)
I've been going to church now for a few months. I was doing so well with keeping up with my Bible reading, note taking, praying, etc. Now I find myself having so many doubts, so many questions. I sit in church listening to my pastor and wonder, "how do we know?" The answer is always, "Faith", but how do we get faith?
Definition of faith is "belief that is not based on proof", or "belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings of religion." How do I get this?
When speaking to other people, "witnessing" if you may, I can give certain scriptures, or say what the Bible says, and sound like I know what I'm talking about. But when people speak to me about what the Bible says, and lessons from the Bible, I question it. "Yeah, right. That'd really happen." Or "Who would really do that for US?" Or "Does that even apply to the people today?" The answer of "How do you know....." is always "faith." So here I am. Looking for it. I know what I believe, I know what the Bible tells me. I know I was saved at age 12 in a small...

Can we use comments for questions, learning and expanding our knowledge and understanding of a Bloggers point. |

(Posted: 06/06/08 6:54pm)
As a blogger and one that loves to read other blogs there is something I seem to be missing among us bloggers at Christian Blog.
Comments can be a source of exploring, learning, sharing, growth and understanding.
Challenge to a view or thought and/or request for more information of something not understood in the blog.
Questions in the comments if you don't understand the jest of a blog or something you would like the blogger to more fully explore in his/her thought.
Before I get slammed, I know, arguments, rudeness, anger, disrespect of others is forbidden, rightly so.
I mean this in a true since of learning and sharing, holding each other up in support and growth.
I've seen Mr. Abela question people on some matters and the support team comment if something is Biblical or historical incorrect.
These are usually of bad content or the author not clearly thinking out the blog first, also,TOS infringements.
This happens but not what I'm talking about, I mean blogs that are will written with good content that make us think and explore thoughts on scripture or in our walk we may not of seen or thought before.
I mean, we have from...

Why Journaling Is Important |

(Posted: 06/04/08 4:34pm)
You may not think that journaling is all that important to your Christian walk. After all, what does writing have to do with your relationship to God or Jesus? The answer is simple; it has a lot to do with your relationship.
The medium used for your journaling exercise is not important. You can use a diary, a notebook or even a blog. The important thing is that you are writing about your personal experience and relationship with our Lord and Savior.
When you take the time to write something down - be that in a journal, diary or even a blog post - you are forced to organize your thoughts. This will help you to reflect back and see what God has been showing you during the last day or week or even month, depending on how often you journal. It is important for us to keep focused on the things God is showing us.
It is not always comfortable to write about what is going on. It can be difficult to find the time to put your thoughts to words. However, in the end you will be thankful that you did. It is a written record that you...

John 8:31 - 36 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
In 1992 there was a movie released which coined a popular phrase "You can't handle the truth!" The name of the movie is A few Good Men. I have never seen the movie and after reading some of the dialogue from the script I have no desire to. I have used that phrase on more that one occasion. Today I use it again, not to promote a movie, but to show how the world "can't handle the truth".
I have had the title of today's post in my head for a few days...

Creation; this is the subject of much debate. There are many different opinions about creation and the age of the earth, as an example just go to a search on the internet.
I want this to be laid out exactly how God wants it to be presented.
Why can't we just take the Genesis account of creation and be finished with it? Why do we want to make the earth older than it is? Why do we want to be in confusion about the dinosaurs?
I can answer these questions simply it is because the devil is the author of confusion. We could leave it at that but for the sake of argument we will explore these questions and hopefully several more.
To let you know where I stand, I believe the Geneses account describes a literal six day creation with the seventh as a day of rest.
I have heard people say that with God a day is as a thousand years. This may be true, but if so why wouldn't the Geneses account have been clearer. (The Geneses account is very clear on creation week.) People also want to use this argument to try and prove that the...

It is true one must get along. One must get along in definite becoming, coming to being freed from persisting to trespass by whereabout that has occurred, we can not have the feel for it much longer because we are not to be made relevant with the accident of what comes and goes. In the point of everything, love is consistent to be real. Do not be choking on the hazard of feeling badly by things of minimal encounter compared to what makes significant shine and well. Thing is, go and extend your hand to your person next to you and do not feel that there is must for anything else. AS it comes to service, good things are well taken care of. Only good ambition makes love prosper. Every single detail you examine in the day must be suitable to you in order for you to experience love to the fullest. Make sure you collaborate with the healthy and all should be well. Good things do not come just for nothing, they are to be fond relating and good animate must be the engine of your life. It is a right to be living a good day. We have the right to do so every time we breath. We must be demanding of good insisting for ourselves, for our good if we are to accomplish the blessed good for life well liven. Our own affirmation should be to be in the well taken of all things and every single detail that claims it's importance to you personally. We are living yet in the flesh, with much make of mention of what the world portrays around the given onto us as offer by worldly passions attuned by common people in effect so we may have to be vigil in this world for, to, and by the betterness influences from above that are good for us and give us the respect that is worthy of calling us sane, responsible, and loving. Do not think another as a fool, lest you forget about good communications. It is fine to accept the beauty of the faith, to enjoy stability is due by being given to the good that is motived for betterness sake, that anything that troubles should be adapted to with relevance of stature and significance for making what is well for an obvious. This blog provides an opportunity for an open discussion on the topics the men of Heritage Bible Church and Roadway Chapel have been covering during the Saturday morning Men's Breakfasts.
Recently, Dwayne has been leading us in studying how to biblically define and balance Truth and Love and currently he has introduced us to a book about R. C. Chapman called "Agape Leadership".
Below are the notes Dwayne provided from the first Saturday in this study.
***************************************************
Growing in Love & Truth
Growth is an essential part of life - quit growing and you start to die. What businesses are the most attractive to invest in? Those that are growing.
What is the hope for all the new Bronco recruits - that they will grow bigger, stronger, faster. Growth is vital.
Growth is also vital for the Christian.
We hear these phrases - Grow in Grace, Grow in Truth
Hebrews 5:11 - 6:1 -
Let us press on - growth
Paul states this pushing forward - growth - in Philippians 3: 13-14.
We need to constantly push forward, as Paul did. Indeed, he said in verse 17 to follow his example.
Growth is essential in our spiritual life.
The question...

I have been pensive lately about how there is no beginning or end...how God has always been there...how he will never end...the things that we all think about sometimes that make our heads want to explode. After much thought I realized that I just had to accept that there are some things we will never ever understand...and boy was that a tough pill to swallow. Then my pastor said something a couple days ago. Of course it wasn't the complete answer to my ponderings. However, it did help me sleep a little better. In the spirit of sharing, I thought I would let you all know what he said. It's nothing to profound, but it affected me in a very deep way. He said the things that are ungodly that sound fun to us know...are from Satan...and lots of people fall into his trap, because Satan gives all the "good" stuff up front. Then he said, the trials we go through now...God gives us the good stuff when we get to heaven. We may have to go through trials now, but it can only get better. Than sometimes I have problems wanted to live forever (and ever and ever and...

Be Careful Little Eyes What You See |

Be careful little eyes, what you see.
I was working with a patient (I do homecare) and she went to bed early so I decided to watch some tv. I only have 17 channels at home because I am frugal and because I don't want most of that trash in my house and we don't really watch tv. Somehow someway I ended up watching a show on MTV just like a train wreck. :| It was a reality show about some famous people. It was very sexual. Then I was bored so I looked the show up online, then I looked at the website, then next thing you know there was very sexual pictures. How did I even get here? The devil takes our weaknesses and preys on them like a hunter. I always have a downfall directly after a very good spiritual experience in God. The spiritual warfare is interesting to watch. It's so easy for me to say well, the devil tempted me and comes in all forms but I know I shouldn't be watching that wordly stuff. It lead to a bad place and it always will. It's so naive to believe that watching trash like that...

Please read the noted scriptures for a greater understanding
God made two great lights to lighten the earth, the sun and the Moon, also the Stars, the greater light and lesser light (Genesis 1:16).
The Bible compares these two great lights with the end time truth. In the resurrection there will be the reward like unto the sun, the moon, and the stars. I Corinthians 15:41-42.
The women in Revelations 12:1 is clothed with the sun and the moon at her feet. She is Jesus Name Revelation 12:17). She is the same as the Philadelphia church that had imitation Jews (Romans 2:28-29) or people to worship at their feet. (Revelation 3:9).
Before the coming of the Lord the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall turn to blood (Acts2:20). If this means the literal sun, the earth will return to a ball of water and probably freeze over unless it was a cloud cover or eclipse, etc. (Genesis 1:2). Earth was under water, the sun drew up the water into the air and the dry land appeared. The water on earth gatherered to the lower parts of the earth and made the seas. (Genesis 1:1-10). The next time the...

Matter over Mind |

I know that the mind is very powerful, and I have heard the saying "mind over matter", but what about when the power of the mind is actually harmful, and of course I mean spiritually. What do you do when after you are saved, you still have past memories, experiences etc.... that the mind doesn't let go of. Well I like the term "Matter over mind", and the matter is Jesus Christ. Through his power and his Name, you can conquer the negative in your mind, and thus follow what the Word says about REnewing your mind.
First of all we have to realize that God is mighty! 2 Cor 10:4-5 says {4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; ) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;} See?!!? God is the matter that can conquer the mind, but we do have a part in it, the weapons are from God, but we have to use them! We have to bring every thought captive to the obedience...

Hello Fellow Brothers and Sisters. Lately Ive been hearing alot of questions such as how do you REALLY know your saved. Is the evidence of receiving the holy spirit be the act of speaking in tongues?? Ive read about the Day of Pentecost when the Lord sent the holy spirit...but Ive never spoken in tongues. But I love JESUS. My thoughts is that God gives different spiritual gifts to his children according to his will. I know this question can take us to different beliefs and doctrine, but this particular thing is bugging me. I would love it if my brothers and sisters in Christ offer some knowledge. I want to believe with all my heart that Im truly saved and that the Holy Spirit really lives inside of me even though Ive never spoken in tongues. Im not sure if I categorized this blog correctly, however thank you for all your help with this question. God Bless....

Have You Ever Had to Eat Grass? |

Have You Ever Had to Eat Grass?
Or maybe just a serving of humble pie?
King Nebuchadnezzar had a pride issue. A big one! God was good and He warned in him a dream that if he did not give the glory due to the Father, he would be brought low. God even provided Daniel as an interpreter for his dream, he simply was without excuse, he had the benefit to "know" what was going to happen if he did not repent but here is what he did;
He claimed the glory that only God has the right to claim.
It says the words were still on his lips, and God brought judgment upon him!
Pride is deadly, and when we take credit, when we take the glory, for that which only God has the right to claim it is only downhill from there unless we repent. I find that I can get prideful of the silliest thing, I mean really, what have I got that I had anything to do with?
The other day I planted my garden, weeded all the beds and lay straw down and I stood back, just as King Nebuchadnezzar did, and felt pride, for...
