I hate fishing, I hate fish, and I don't want to go fishing! |

I hate fishing, I hate fish, and I don't want to go fishing.
My Daddy's favorite pastime was fishing. He could set out there in a boat for hours. It did not matter if the fish were biting. He would set there. About the only thing that would make him come ashore without a catch was a thunderstorm.
He also liked to have his children accompany him. He would take one of us at a time for a father child time together. When I was about 15, I was a bit of a brat. I hated fishing and when we were out on the lake, I pouted showed my boredom and generally acted like a brat. Teenagers are God's revenge for being one.
We returned to the cabin and my father said to me, "You really do hate fishing don't you?"
I thought at least he gets it, and I said, ‘Yes I hate fishing."
He said, "Okay, I'll never take you fishing again."
I felt a pain in my heart. Deep down inside I knew I had made a mistake but I ignored that feeling. Fifteen years later, my father died suddenly from a heart attack. He retired from work June 1 and died June 25. He never even drew one social security check. My second son was 2 weeks old.
So many times over the years I have remembered that day. I regret more than words can ever express the bad choice I made that day. But you know, teenagers they are know it alls.
My children all enjoyed fishing as children. I went fishing with them. I still hated fishing, but I now understood that what was important was not those stupid fish I hate, but being together. I longed to be able to set in a boat again and be bored if I could be there with my Daddy. If my Daddy were still here, he would be 99 years old this July.
This is for you Daddy; I am sorry, I love you, and Happy Father's Day.
Maybe for Father's day I'll find a plastic fish and hang it by your headstone.

Ah what a sweet blog Katz. I too have regrets. And I know my children will have them as well. But your dad knew how much you loved him. He was a kid too!
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Katz....great piece.
My oldest recently asked me what was my favorite thing to do...I thought a second and said...more than anything, I'd rather be fishing.
At first she burst into laughter at the response, then quickly became serious. She looked at me and said, but Dad you never get to go fishing.
To which I responded that I know, but I'll never stop wanting to be there.
Big families sometime allow us to set ourselves aside and simply enjoy the "best things" of others.
And as a Dad of a daughter, who also doesn't "prefer" fishing, I'm positive your Dad understood.
Thanks for sharing Katz, it's a good one.
Blessings,
PapaBear

kk, you made me cry. I wish we got do-overs in life. But as a parent, I know your dad understood. He didn't take it personally, he knew the age was speaking, not the girl!
Praise God that He gives us a do-over every minute of every day! When we accept Christ, our whole life is a spiritual do-over.
I have a few fond and a lot no-so-fond memories of my dad and fishing. but they are memories nevertheless.

While I understand the regret, try not to beat yourself up over it. Wisdom is a funny thing. Some people get wisdom at an awfully early age, and some NEVER "wise up"! I must confess that I am probably in the slow learner group. Now in the latter stages of life, I've played the "if only I knew then what I know now" game quite a bit. Such reasonings are not necessarily a bad thing, though; by examining my past, I actually learned two things: 1) Self compassion. I realized that certain actions/situations were beyond my control, and I was only operating on the limited resources & knowledge that I had, 2) God is much more in control of my life and circumstances than I had ever realized. My vision is limited; His is limitless, He who knows the beginning from the end.
While we peer through a smoky glass now, we'll soon see with perfect clarity. Should be interesting!
