For I Know The Plans I Have For You...

whobelieve posted:

This is such a familiar verse, and it is often quoted. In my church, it is tradition to throw a party for the High School graduates of the church. Their parents often make a posterboard collage of their lives, and there is cake. And every graduate gets a Bible from the Pastor with a verse transcribed in the front specifically for that graduate. When I graduated in 2004, I received this treatment. This familiar verse, Jeremiah 29:11, was the one written in the front of the Bible for me. Now I don't know if Pastor was specifically led to write this particular verse in my Bible just for me, or if it was considered kind of a generic verse that suited the occasion, just as Psalm 23 seems to suit a funeral. Regardless of the reason that particular verse was chosen, ever since that day it has held particular meaning for me.Sometimes...

And All Because Of A Broken Foot

whobelieve posted:

My mom works in a hospital for the criminally insane. For over 30 years, she worked as a nurse. In the past couple of years she received the training and a promotion and became a nurse administrator. My mom has a real passion for the Lord. And a deep, deep passion for teaching children about the Lord. For the past several years whenever Vacation Bible School would come around she would automatically be the one that would do the Verse Memorization portion of each day. It wasn't even a question in anyone's mind, especially hers. Goodness, the things she comes up with to help children remember the verses! The excitement and joy she brings to learning about God's Word! She is a natural, and she loves to do it. That love of the Word and learning the Word is infectious. The hospital she works at has instituted a new rule...

Marching In The Trees

whobelieve posted:

In the days leading up to my son's end of the year awards ceremony, I informed him that after the assembly I was going to treat him to a surprise. I knew that he would love this surprise, and I told him so. He, however, did not receive this news with joy. Excitement to be sure. But no joy.Every time the topic came up, I was hounded with questions. What will it be? Will it be a toy? A present? What would it be? Mom, why can't you just tell me? This would always end up with a huff and a pout, to the point where you would wonder if he even wanted the surprise anymore. Clearly, he was wondering if it would be worth all this build up, all this concern on his part. He even started instructing me on what would be a good surprise and what would...

Coming Out Of The Shell

whobelieve posted:

Let me bore everyone for a moment and talk about my cats. I have had one cat, Charlotte, for almost 8 years. She is a tortoise shell calico. She is small and dainty, and she is very affectionate to everyone. She has always been timid going outside. On the few occasions that I have brought her outdoors, she would walk closely to the house, hugging the exterior wall, and only getting brave enough to bound over to me. She has always been curious, sniffing at the door when it is open, even going out to sit on the porch at times. My other kitty, Molly, is gray with black tiger stripes. I have only had her for about a year and a half. Everything about her is large. My husband affectionately calls her Pudge. She does not understand or apply the concept of feline grace. Everything with her is a...

So In The Past Month: A Testimony

whobelieve posted:

Years ago, I read something that really had a profound effect on me. It was speaking on having a testimony. This bit talked about keeping it clear, concise, and preferably relatively short. But the most important factor was to hit the key point in the listeners mind: What difference has God made in your life? What a concept! But of course! Really, it should have been obvious to me from the getgo, but it just wasnt. If ever that precious window opens up and someone genuinely wants to know more about God, you can be pretty sure that the main thrust of their concern will be what kind of impact God could have on them by seeing how it has changed you. I had heard a million times about describing the experience of being saved, and having a list of verses memorized that described the who/what/why/what to do of being saved....

Cleaning House- Taking It To Far?

whobelieve posted:

Maybe it comes with the territory of being a woman or being a mom, but I really do not like messes. No, you dont understand. I really dont like messes. For example, I am a passable cook with a few specialties. However, the main reason I consider these certain meals to be specialties is not just because I need specific ingredients or because of the time it takes to make the meal. No, it is a specialty because of the mess I am going to have to deal with because of making that meal! I become genuinely stressed out, even despondent over clutter and messes. Dont even get me started on the state of things on the top of my refrigerator, my husbands domain. Or the stacks of boxes in the corner of the bedroom. Or the piles of... Why did God see fit to put together a letsthrowitouter like...

Fashionable Philosophy- Picking And Choosing

whobelieve posted:

Everyone has different beliefs. There is such a wide spectrum. From people who believe that everything under the sun has a spirit, to those who have no God, to those who believe in the One True God. You can have two selfproclaimed atheists believing two very different things, and two born again Christians sitting side by side in a church that, while yet part of the family of God, do not view even the simplest things in the same color. Many people seem to stumble about, not putting thought or effort into the what or why of their beliefs. Although this is a very serious matter, these are not the kind of people this blog is about. Who I would like to consider are those who have taken the time to at least put into words what it is they believe. Interestingly, I have found that many of these declarations...

Is There Such A Thing As Being Too Generous?

whobelieve posted:

I am so blessed by the kind of people I have in my family. You know the saying, You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you cant pick your friends nose ? Wait, thats not right... Oh yes, You can pick your friends, but you cant pick family. Thats it. Well, as I said, I have been very blessed by the kind of people who populate my family on my side and my husbands side. They are incredibly generous. I would even go so far as to say generous to a fault. My parents have never had a second thought about giving. A fair amount of the debt they have is because they would just give, give, give above and beyond what they actually could. I guess they just figured that any thing they had (and didnt have) was Gods anyways, so they could just...

I Have A Major Problem With People Leaving

whobelieve posted:

My parents have always had a tumultuous marriage. I cant remember a single week when I was growing up that there wasnt an argument between them. Very often it was a very loud, long argument. Sometimes dishes were broken. They have always stayed together, though. Their most recent anniversary was 34 years. It was a regular thing that the conclusion of these arguments was the sound of my dad slamming the front door and speeding up our driveway in the car. He was never gone very long. Certainly never more than a few hours. One time, when I was probably around 7, things were worse than usual between my parents. Dad said he was going to go away and not come back this time. He actually started packing. He had never done that before. I remember we were getting ready to sit down to supper, and I went to him...

Curious Inverse Relationships, Among Other Things

whobelieve posted:

In mathematical terms, a direct relationship is when, for example, as one variable increases, the other increases also. Another kind of relationship is the inverse relationship. This is where, as one variable increases, the other decreases. Now, in Gods economy, things that seem as though they should be a direct relationship are not always. For example, one would think that the more one sins, the more of Gods punishment that person deserves. That is a direct relationship that makes sense in our world. However, this is not the case. The person who sins more does not necessarily get more punishment. Indeed, if that person has true repentance, there is no punishment. An inverse relationship. However, there will always be a direct relationship between repentance and grace. Sincere, true repentance is always answered back with more and more grace. There are others. One direct relationship that may not be obvious at...
