Thoughts From Pastors Across America, Part 1
I felt it was time to put together a list of all the comments I have written down over the last seven or eight years that I have had the pleasure and honor of talking with pastors from across America and Canada.
Mostly I wanted to do this to try to bring them all into one file, rather then a whole bunch of different files on my computer, but then the idea hit me that I should publish these great comments, as many of them are just way to good to leave only on my computer and in my own mind.
Because of the type of conversations that I have with pastors, and the fact that pastors I speak too understand I have a "zero naming" rule in my life and ministry, I have removed from the below comments who said each comment, where they live, when they said it, and what they were going through in their own live and in their ministry -- of all which I have tried to keep track of while compiling this great list!
I hope that many people will find some nuggets of wisdom and insight...

I believe many people have broken their hearts for china and Myanmar at this moment. while i would really love to see the prayers promised or told to be prayed versus the actual prayer that is being prayed. Not against anyone though. A matter of fact is that...recently i just found out not all preachers are compassionate and nor all the other believers(though i have know this for a long time but never actually knew how it really is..just head knowledge)
all over the world all the charities and all forms of religious leaders including those of other religions are trying their best to help china and myanmar by various forms. followers of christ are ask to make a difference in this world. but sadly, our leaders seems to be following and being influence by other religion rather influencing them.
why do i say that? there is nothing wrong with trying to by running charities, bazaars to raise money for the poor and oppress the problem is what motivates it. If it is solely love, kindness, and compassion than *ding* *ding* you are on the right track. Many people (even those who do not know God) are motivated by the...

Women Pastors, Twisted Scriptures, and Itching Ears
(Please pray before reading this, ask God to open your heart.)
[bible]1 Timothy 2:11-15[/bible]
I do not believe that women should be pastors, nor they should they have authority over a man in church. These verses are complete Biblical proof why I believe this. This is the Word of God. These Words were inspired by God into a man and written down. But I do not see the man who wrote them and his "opinion", but I see God speaking.
God here is truly saying that women should NOT be pastors under any circumstance. Why? Some people wonder. Well, I believe that he did this because women were deceived first. Man wasn't deceived. Only Eve was deceived by the serpent. Adam's sin was NOT stopping her. Women are also more emotional. More easily deceived. More compassionate. More fickle. Men are not so emotional. Men are very even keeled. Men are less compassionate and more truthful. Men stick to their guns. I think that God made it this way because he made man that way for his purpose. I would rather have a man preaching to me because I trust men more then I...

Well this is the first time I've done anything like this before. I'm hoping to get closer to God through this. I just had a eye opening talk with my youth pastors and that is one of the reasons why I'm doing this. I've just been feeling kind of pointless lately, just drifting through life like a feather on the breeze, no real purpose. This started bugging me, not accomplishing anything, just being an extreme introvert. It's not very fulfilling for anyone. I decided to talk with someone about this, thus the afore mentioned talk with pastors. I'm not entirely sure the purpose to blogs but I'm hoping that I can begin to comprehend something of myself and of God through this. Myself being rather young, I feel that I need to set a good precedent for the rest of my life. Though I'm young, I still feel a need for something more, a something greater than myself, as I think that all humans feel at one time. It's funny how this gets easier the longer you think and type. Out...

it is never right, to do wrong, to do right. |

An old Bible teacher of mine used to say this all the time:
" It is NEVER right... to do wrong.. to do right."
I have always pondered this saying and always have tried to live it out. I have made many mistakes and done many wrong things to make things "right" when in the end, its all wrong.
Now, we have here on CB the discussion of women pastors and if it is Biblical or not. Many of the agruments for women pastors is that the men aren't doing it. Men are not rising up to the calling that they are supposed to, so women are taking over.
[bible]1 Timothy 2:9-15[/bible]
It is clearly stated (and remember this is the Holy Word of God.) that women should not "teach or have authority over a man." Now, I have heard the arguement that, "we can't listen to this because the women Paul was talking about were unruly and yelling and screaming in church." But, I see a problem with that excuse, we have to treat the whole Bible that way if we use it for one Scripture. We can't look at 1 Peter 1 anymore and say that...

i really wonder why |

I REALLY WONDER WHY
I really wonder why foreign missionaries can ride planes going to different mission points while local pastors "should" take a bus or a boat to get to these places.
I really wonder why foreign missionaries should take the first class in a boat while the local pastors should take the lowest class while riding the same boat
I really wonder why foreign missionaries can have their own cars while local pastors should take "jeepneys" and other lowest form of public transportation.
I really wonder why foreign missionaries should stay in hotels during conferences while local pastors should sleep in the floor where cartons are their mattress.
I really wonder why foreign missionaries cannot sell their old stuffs to local pastors and local churches in a cheaper price where they sell it to the public who were non-believers and in much cheaper price (I personally have seen this).
I really wonder why foreign missionaries can have the "Lottie Moon Offering" while local missionaries can never have even a single cent from it.
I really wonder why foreign missionaries can live "luxuriously" (in our view point of course), while local pastors and workers should live in a Nipa...

inter-american conference of the church of god in south america |
|
|
Posted by:
nzamora (Posted: 10/23/2007 10:15am)
This is a report of the work we've been doing over the last few days. The Church of God Cono Sur de America gathered October first, second and third for a series of conferences and group analysis in Alem, a province of Misiones, Argentina.
About 50 pastors were there for the Inter-American Conference of the Church of God. The coordinators thought it would be convenient for pastors to get together based on the geographical areas they live in to discuss "hot topics" and prepare them to deal with them.
Every six months a conference must take place in different areas of America: the South, Central America and the Caribbean. The regional coordinator of Global Missions has assumed this scheduling work.
The subjects that we are dealing with include Explosive Evangelism: Methods and Strategies, Missions and Evangelism: A Vital Century for the Church and the New Visions for the Future, Uses and Abuses of the Radio, Television, and Mass Communications.
As of today the speaking engagements have been returning positive results because some countries are taking seriously Jesus' mandate of "go make disciples." New churches are being started with new centers of ministerial preparation.
This time Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile...

life after ministry--is there? |

Just a thought on my mind. I just had a colleague leave the ministry. I am not sure of all the reasons. Personally, I think it was more lack of finances than anything else. The dollar has become weak this year (there is a whole other blog about the reasons for that as well.) Regardless of the reason, he left, he went back home to the United States. As a missionary, I have always felt the pressure of being one at the top along with pastors in the United States. We do have a lot of responsibilities, and because we are full-time Christian workers overseas, we usually don't get to see family and friends back in the US for 4 to 5 years for Christmas, 4th of July, birthdays and so on. Something though that has been gnawing at my heart is this. If it is the will of God, for me and my family to leave the foreign field and work a regular job and help a local church in the United States am I not "at the top" with all the missionaries and pastors who give their lives to Christ and others. I understand the sacrifices we make...

pastors beware judgement flows from the head down. |

PASTORS BEWARE JUDGMENT FLOWS FROM THE HEAD DOWN.
(I'm not talking about you unless it's you!)
First, let me say that writing this has been one of the most uncomfortable things God has instructed me to do. As a former PK, (my father was a pastor until death) there was always that consciousness that I was never to question spiritual authority as it related to headship and judgment. I was taught not just by him but by others that we were to pray and God would speak directly to the leaders himself. Because he trained us to challenge everything relating to academics, perhaps to enhance our ability to discern, judge and to place in us a true quest for knowledge, I felt it necessary to apply this teaching to my spiritual life. So, after praying the through my apprehension of this topic, I now realize that the commission in this season of my life is to write what God gives me with boldness. I questioned God wondering what people would say about what he was giving me and he only left me with this familiar passage of scripture (please read at your leisure) Mark chapter 4:1-9. With that being said...

tithe: where does the tithe go? (interview #3) |
Tithe - Reason & Destination Of Giving
In a continuation from my previous two Blog Entries (ref: [blog=abelajohnb/biblical-tithe-an-introduction]Biblical Tithe - An Introduction[/blog] and [blog=abelajohnb/kingdom-finances-the-tithe]Kingdom Finances: The Tithe[/blog]) I recently had another very interesting conversation with a good friend in which we discussed the issue of tithe in relationship to where it should be given, why it should be given, and what if you no longer go to church... should you still tithe?
That said, I have tried my best to clean up our conversation and make it presentable... it follows:
The Opening Discussion/Question:
My Friend: My question to you is should a person pay rent and electricity before tithing or after. I don't have a lot of money, actually I struggle quiet a bit. A lot of people have said I tithe to the church first and miraculously your rent will be paid and you should never be frightened of loosing your home.
John B. Abela: Uggh, that's one of those questions that I'm not really sure there is an answer too. I know people who swear that both/either are just as valid as the other one is. Personally, I've always done it based upon my total income - that...

pastoral salaries - or the lack thereof |

Pastoral Salaries - Or The Lack Thereof
I am going to walk a 'fine line' in writing about this issue (both from a private policy issue, and the fact that people never like to talk about money) but none the less, this is an issue I feel we NEED to discuss!
There has been a lot of internet chatter[sup]1[/sup] recently about the lowering of pastoral salaries over the last 10 years - or more correctly, the failure to increase salaries as expected and done in every other line of work.
From The Churches Point Of View:
What I have done is taken the last 106 Open Positions listed at the 'Assemblies of God Jobs Online' website and averaged them out in order to discover the average salary that pastors are making on a monthly/yearly basis.
Based upon the last 106 posted Open Positions, on a monthly basis an average North American Assemblies of God minister is going to make: $2184.08 - which works out to $26,208.96 per year.
Now, before you go and say "wow, most be a lot of small churches posting jobs!", I can share with you that one very predominate church we have had join and list...
