tithing (part one)
Posted by:  oldtimeballplayer   (Posted: 06/13/08 2:10pm)
God is our Father and no father will ask their children to do something they themselves have not done, or will not do. The Father is the example for the children to follow and to learn from. So what we are about to discuss on tithing God instituted and demonstrated the principle for us. In the forum on finance I asked two questions pertaining to tithes; "What did God tithe in the Old Testament?" And "What did He tithe in the New Testament?" To answer these two questions we have to know why and when God instituted tithing into the earth and what purpose the tithe serves? We also need to understand God doesn't need our tithe. He is self sufficient and needs nothing from us except our love and faithfulness. So if God doesn't need our tithe; there has to be another reason why God tells us to tithe. It would suffice us to know that everything He did in the beginning that governed the life of earthly man; He did for our benefit and not to harm us; and those things will remain in effect until we enter into eternity. According to Jesus in [Matthew 5:17-20] "Do not...

tithing: not a new testament principle
Posted by:  fatherson   (Posted: 03/28/08 12:26am)
Tithing, as it is taught in the church today, is definitely NOT a biblical New Testament principle. There are many that teach a more New Testament concept of the grace of generous giving with joy as the Holy Spirit leads (Like respected teacher Roger Sapp). The New Testament teaching on giving requires a higher standard of surrender. I will make a few points here, about tithing as often taught by the church today, and then about true New Testament giving: 1. Although Abraham tithed before the law, he did not tithe as the church tells us to do today. He tithed 10% of someone else's belongings (plunder which belonged to Sodom, which he retrieved) and he gave the other 90% back to Sodom (he had no increase to tithe on!!!) and this was a ONE TIME act. Yet, the church tells Christians to tithe 10% of their own increase or income, all the time, the rest of their life--definitely not a Biblical concept. This is a contemporary Christian law continued from years of legalistic church history. 2. Jacob did not tithe the way the church tells us to. He obviously did not feel that he had to tithe because he...

woe to the selective listener
Posted by:  literalword   (Posted: 01/28/08 7:52pm)
Wake up church, it is time to prepare for the Groom for He is coming soon. The days of selective listening are over. It is time to hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Those who live by the law will be judged by the law. He who is in Christ Jesus is not called to tithe. Our blessings and promises are so much more glorious than those of the Old. To whom much is given much is required. We have been pulled out of the fiery pit by the blood of Jesus Christ. We have been bought at a lofty price. Why would you even consider cheating the Lord? The word "tithe" is not mentioned to the church anywhere in Scripture. Rather, all who believe have all things in common. Our example is found in Acts, not Malachi. All who believed sold all their possessions and goods and divided them among all, as anyone had need. The multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that anything he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. Nor was there anyone among them who lacked, for all...

dealing with a spiritual black eye
Posted by:  happytoberestored   (Posted: 01/28/08 12:18pm)
Dealing with a Spiritual Black Eye Have you ever felt like you needed to go buy a "prayer steak" to put on your "spiritual black eye" that God gave you when He was dealing with you regarding an issue over which you had been struggling? God tells us to be transparent and honest with our brothers and sisters in Christ about our triumphs and our struggles. So, without further ado... Over the last six months or so, I've been dealing with an issue that is near and dear to the hearts of many Christians - tithing. It's not that I don't tithe - it's about the way in which I am to arrive at the AMOUNT of tithing. Here comes the New Year - my pastor starts the New Year with a series about being obedient to God through the remembrance of tithing. Bonk, brick #1. This past Sunday, my pastor wraps up the tithing series with a real "here ya go, Virginia, YOU ASKED FOR IT!" verse of scripture from Malachi 3:10, "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I...

car accident, spiritual warfare, and debt
Posted by:  missoctober   (Posted: 01/07/08 6:26am)
I have posted before on my questions towards tithing and my recent downfall into extreme debt emergency. People have been great in their encouragement, as well as keeping me humble. I have never had a good discipline shown to me or used in finances. I am guilty of being irresponsible. Ironically, it snuck up on me not in lavish spending, but rather in small things like eating out, groceries, etc. I have recently asked the Lord to forgive me for my irresponsibility to HIS money and to show me the right way to live. I do believe I am to tithe FIRST. Right now as of my last paycheck, I do not have enough to give Him in tithe. So I am offering myself in worship, prayer, and deed as best I can. What happened was that last Thursday, I went to my grandmother's and we ended up talking about the book 23 Minutes in Hell, as well about the Glory of God the entire night. I stayed at my aunt's house down the street for the night as I was supposed to go to Lincoln the next day for an orthodontist appt. I fell asleep but woke back up...

getting to the "heart" of the matter
Posted by:  blessings2you   (Posted: 01/04/08 3:17am)
As many of you know who dare to read these posts and look at the comments I leave; I tend to promote ideas that make a person "think". I have devoted my life to independently studying the Bible so as to better understand God's Heart. There is a risk when the Bible is strictly taken literally that the kind of legalism the scribes taught the Pharisees can take place. God is love, God is light and God is all good. Everything we read in the written Word of God has to measured against the standard of who God is or we lose sight of the big picture. For instance; we know that God is faithful. He has said many times in His Word that He is. We also know that God is perfect. We know that God is not a man that He should lie, neither the son of man that He should repent. Yet, God did indeed "change His mind" many times in the Old Testament. If one strictly takes every word in God's Word literally, there will be many occasions where apparent contradictions abound. God does not lie and He does not repent. But He is also a...

tithing or groceries?
Posted by:  missoctober   (Posted: 01/03/08 10:49am)
I just had a question that I am sure people have already talked about, but haven't seen any direct answers to what you think about the situation. I recently got paid from a job, but am negative over a thousand dollars in my bank account. I am trying to pay immediate bills that are constantly coming at me at rapid fire, all the while begging God to save me. I do not have enough money left to pay my tithe. Which breaks my heart because I have been promising God for so long that I really do want to tithe, and that if I'm able, I will. My money does not go to partying, shopping, or things of that nature. I've cut down on everything that I do and try not to drive a lot of places. I've put applications in, I'm trying everything I can do to make more money to survive. But when it comes down to tithing, should I give the last of my money, which is still not enough in the first place, or do I buy groceries/gas to get to work? This absolutely breaks my heart, and I feel like I have no help. Thanks...

10/29/2007 2 pm
Posted by:  youthpastortodd   (Posted: 10/29/07 11:04am)
Today I read Paul's defense for living on donations given to the Corinthians. It is funny how people love to benefit from ministry, but they don't want to support the people who minister to them. I guess it is simply a matter of perspective. Before I was in the ministry, I didn't understand how difficult it can be to live on what people pay ministers. Now, I want to go back and kick myself for not getting it. Maybe this is one of the reasons that people should go on short term missions trips. It is a humbling experience to have to depend on the finances of others... at least for those of us old enough to live on our own. Lord, I pray that people in our church would understand the importance of their tithe to this ministry... and ultimately to themselves. If our members are truly robbing You, how much more are they robbing themselves of that deeper relationship with You. Lord, help me to tithe on my full ministry package (salary, annuity, and Health insurance). Lord, I just want to be right with You in all things. Please place your hand of health on myself and my...

supercool
Posted by:  forwardlifecoach   (Posted: 05/01/07 8:21pm)
Wow! God is supercool. Despite losing one of my cleaning clients to her housecleaning cousin I went in to give my tithe today. I am notorious for forgetting my checkbook. Bit of a dork. My car is dead, this and that, all this stuff, but we are called to be obedient. Two hours later my phone rang. It was my as-needed client. This is the third time that shortly after tithing my phone rang and it was my as-needed client. Three for three ain't bad! God certainly does take care of His children. It's horrible I have senioritis. Horrible because studying religion at a religion college equals many, many classes. It feels like I've been in school forever. FOREVER! Have many years to go. Eighteen I think. It will be interesting. The school I'm transferring to is nearly an hour away, bleh. That will be fun working that into the schedule. Ah well, it's just for a season. Fortunately God provides energy and good humor as much as He does calls from as-needed clients. My friend's web-intelligent husband is supposed to be working on uploading my website tonight! Woo hoo! That site represents hours and hours of child neglect. Kidding....

book review: neither poverty nor riches by craig blomberg
Posted by:  tevyebird   (Posted: 01/22/07 6:08pm)
Neither Poverty Nor Riches, by Craig Blomberg (IVP, 1999). My first familiarity with Craig Blomberg was an appearance he made on Stu Epperson's talk show. There he was speaking, in regard to the tithe, the Old Testament had three, two of which were yearly, and one every third year, which equals 23 1/3% per year. This caught my attention, as I have been a believer for nearly thirty years, and had never heard of such a thing. Now, of course, there are wackos saying all kinds of things, but ther aren't any getting their books published under the IVP imprint, so I had to lay my hands on the book to read it through. What Blomberg has researched out is a lot more than the above statement, although that may be the least heard and, therefore, the most attention getting. He deals with virtually every verse in the Bible that speaks in some way about money, and comments on it. The title comes from Proverbs 30:8, and is a one phrase overview of everything God has to say about the subject. This, in turn, is challanging for almost anyone in the English speaking world in that, by historical standards, we...

where does my tithe go?
Posted by:  philippiansfourseven   (Posted: 12/12/06 7:22am)
In a recent comment, I mentioned that our Pastor and his wife are soon leaving to go into full time Missions. We have another family that is also being sent by our church into the Mission Field. Both couples are now Missionaries with Churches In Missions. I have the greatest respect for these people! They are answering the 'Call' and heading out where I can not yet go, or may never be able to go. However, I can pray.....and I can send! Here's a link to a video that sums it up. The Plate In Christ, Philippiansfourseven...

tithe: where does the tithe go? (interview #3)
Posted by:  abelajohnb   (Posted: 08/11/06 7:48am)
Tithe - Reason & Destination Of Giving In a continuation from my previous two Blog Entries (ref: Biblical Tithe - An Introduction and Kingdom Finances: The Tithe) I recently had another very interesting conversation with a good friend in which we discussed the issue of tithe in relationship to where it should be given, why it should be given, and what if you no longer go to church... should you still tithe? That said, I have tried my best to clean up our conversation and make it presentable... it follows: The Opening Discussion/Question: My Friend: My question to you is should a person pay rent and electricity before tithing or after. I don't have a lot of money, actually I struggle quiet a bit. A lot of people have said I tithe to the church first and miraculously your rent will be paid and you should never be frightened of loosing your home. John B. Abela: Uggh, that's one of those questions that I'm not really sure there is an answer too. I know people who swear that both/either are just as valid as the other one is. Personally, I've always done it based upon my total income - that...

kingdom finances: the tithe
Posted by:  abelajohnb   (Posted: 02/13/06 10:05pm)
This short "Question & Answer" has been copied with permission from the book "The Treasury", written by Anne Kalvestrand. The question's were asked of, and answered by, Pastor Bill Johnson, Senior Pastor, Bethel Church, Redding, California. USA. Question: Is the tithe a principle only for those who live under the Law of Moses? Answer: No. , Abraham practices the tithe 400 years before the Law was given - "Melchizedek, king of Salem ... to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all..." Hebrews 7:1-1 , Jacob also tithed. "... of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You." Genesis 28:22 , The Law ratified the wisdom of tithing. "And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's; so it is holy to the Lord." Leviticus 27:30 , Jesus confirmed the principle of the tithe. "... you pay tithe of the mint and anise and cummin ... these you ought to have done..." Matthew 23:23 Question: Did the early church fathers practice tithing? Answer: Yes Jusitin Marrtyr, Renaeus, Tertullian, Cyprian, Irenaius, Ambrose, Augustine, and many more. "Our ancestors used to...

biblical tithe - an introduction
Posted by:  abelajohnb   (Posted: 12/20/05 10:15pm)
A good friend and I got talking last night about some of the teachings of Christianity that we thought were wrong. We ended up talking about the ways that (we feel) many churches teach on the subject of tithing incorrectly. It was a good and healthy discussion that lead to a lot of thinking and a bit of digging into the Holy Text (in both present translations and ancient), a bit of digging within a number of exo-biblical references, and even looking at some self-proclaimed-authoritative-websites that we found. As you may, or may not be aware of, I try to release two or three research papers every year based on issues I feel the Lord directing me to learn more about and share with others. My previous research was on John the Baptist, which lead me into perhaps the deepest research I've ever encountered - as well as one of the deepest self-appraisals I've done in the last five years. Shortly after I completed the research and documentation on John the Baptist I felt the Holy Spirit revealing to me to research what the proper way(s) to honor the Lord with tithes are. Having studied the Old Testament laws concerning...
