tithing: not a new testament principle |
 |

Tithing, as it is taught in the church today, is definitely NOT a biblical New Testament principle. There are many that teach a more New Testament concept of the grace of generous giving with joy as the Holy Spirit leads (Like respected teacher Roger Sapp). The New Testament teaching on giving requires a higher standard of surrender. I will make a few points here, about tithing as often taught by the church today, and then about true New Testament giving:
1. Although Abraham tithed before the law, he did not tithe as the church tells us to do today. He tithed 10% of someone else's belongings (plunder which belonged to Sodom, which he retrieved) and he gave the other 90% back to Sodom (he had no increase to tithe on!!!) and this was a ONE TIME act. Yet, the church tells Christians to tithe 10% of their own increase or income, all the time, the rest of their life--definitely not a Biblical concept. This is a contemporary Christian law continued from years of legalistic church history.
2. Jacob did not tithe the way the church tells us to. He obviously did not feel that he had to tithe because he...

john preaches to the people, now and then. |

John preaches to the people, then and now.
[NIV, Luke 3
7. Then John said to the multitudes that coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
8. Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
9. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.]
This sounds like John is talking to the churches of today. So many churches do not appear to be true followers of the Christ. Back then; as it is today, many practice a false faith a counterfeit religion.
[10. "What should we do then?" the crowd asked.
11. John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.]
Tithing as such apparently is not mentioned in the New Testament, but sharing and giving are clearly mentioned. Tithing is giving and sharing...

Dealing with a Spiritual Black Eye
Have you ever felt like you needed to go buy a "prayer steak" to put on your "spiritual black eye" that God gave you when He was dealing with you regarding an issue over which you had been struggling?
God tells us to be transparent and honest with our brothers and sisters in Christ about our triumphs and our struggles. So, without further ado...
Over the last six months or so, I've been dealing with an issue that is near and dear to the hearts of many Christians - tithing. It's not that I don't tithe - it's about the way in which I am to arrive at the AMOUNT of tithing.
Here comes the New Year - my pastor starts the New Year with a series about being obedient to God through the remembrance of tithing.
Bonk, brick #1.
This past Sunday, my pastor wraps up the tithing series with a real "here ya go, Virginia, YOU ASKED FOR IT!" verse of scripture from Malachi 3:10, "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I...

A gift of love
I grew up in a very poor family. If you have read my testimony, you know that. I have been reading a lot about tithing. Tithing is not just about giving money. It is also giving of ones self to and for others. When I was 12 years old, I remember a woman visiting us from one of the local churches. She wanted to get to know a little about our family and what our needs might be. My mother told her that, even at the age of 12, I could make my own clothing on the sewing machine. We had an old singer treadle machine. I had learned at the age of 10. I kept begging my mother to teach me, but being a woman of no patience, she simply handed me some red material and thread and told me to figure it out for my self. I did, I made a skirt. Mother did me a favor, actually, because all of the crafts I now do, I thought myself.
A few days later the lady from the church came back to the house and gave me a whole big bunch of material. There were...

From a previous blog entry, some of you may know that I am currently in an epic battle with my own body-- trying to lose weight and get healthy! So tonight a friend of mine and I joined Weight Watchers (again). BTW, yes I did say a FRIEND-- I am actually doing much better in that category, and I'm very thankful to God for one good Christian friend here-- hopefully with more to come. :-)
Anyway, back to joining Weight Watchers-- my friend has 25 pounds to lose. And I have quite a bit more than that to lose, so I'm a little intimidated, but feeling positive toward the program. It's $10 a week that I don't exactly NEED to spend, especially given the rather empty nature of my wallet lately but at the same time, the health implications of being significantly overweight would cost MUCH more than that. And having felt firmly convicted lately that I need to lose this extra blubber, and knowing that I need accountability, I asked my spouse and he was cool with it.
So what do two needing-to-lose-weight girls do after the first Weight Watchers meeting? You guessed it-- we went to dinner. lol....

tithing in the nt |

Greetings and Blessings
My friends and I are discussing tithing in our small group and being somewhat new to the word I am learning a great deal in these bible study groups. One in our group pointed out that Christ does not speak of tithing in the New Testament. I was surprised to find out he was right after researching it. I am a tither and I love to give to the Lord and his Church but I am curious as to what others think on this subject. Is giving one tenth or 10% what God wants us to give coming from the Old Testament and the sacrificial days or is there a new course of giving that I an unaware of that Christ may have directed us to do in the New Testament?
What are your thoughts on this?...

This short "Question & Answer" has been copied with permission from the book "The Treasury", written by Anne Kalvestrand. The question's were asked of, and answered by, Pastor Bill Johnson, Senior Pastor, Bethel Church, Redding, California. USA.
Question: Is the tithe a principle only for those who live under the Law of Moses?
Answer: No.
, Abraham practices the tithe 400 years before the Law was given - "Melchizedek, king of Salem ... to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all..." Hebrews 7:1-1
, Jacob also tithed. "... of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You." Genesis 28:22
, The Law ratified the wisdom of tithing. "And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's; so it is holy to the Lord." Leviticus 27:30
, Jesus confirmed the principle of the tithe. "... you pay tithe of the mint and anise and cummin ... these you ought to have done..." Matthew 23:23
Question: Did the early church fathers practice tithing?
Answer: Yes
Jusitin Marrtyr, Renaeus, Tertullian, Cyprian, Irenaius, Ambrose, Augustine, and many more.
"Our ancestors used to...
