The word "day" (yom) is used a total of 2301 times in the Old Testament. Notice the chart to the right shows the uses of the word "day" (yom) in the Old Testament outside of Genesis 1 and how each of the qualifiers--number, evening and morning, evening or morning, and night - when used with the word "day" always means an ordinary day.

A. "Day" + Number - Used 410 Times (in plural or singular) - ALWAYS means an ordinary day!
B. "Evening" & Morning" together without "Day"- Used 38 Times - ALWAYS means an ordinary day!
C. "Evening" or "Morning" with "Day" - Used 23 Times Each - ALWAYS means an ordinary day!
D. "Night" with "Day" - Used 52 Times - ALWAYS means an ordinary day!
In Genesis 1 you notice that the first time the word "day" is used, it is qualified with the words night, evening, morning and number.
Verse 5 And God called the light Day and the darkness He called night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
For each of the other times the word "day" is used in the six days of Creation, it is used with a number and the words evening and morning.
Verse 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
Verse 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
Verse 19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
Verse 23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
The contextual usage of the word "day" in Genesis Chapter 1 makes it clear that our God wants us to understand that the word "day" in His Creation Account is to be interpreted as an ordinary day and not as an extended period of time.
