Of all the things Peter, James and John saw while with Jesus, perhaps none was more profound as what is recorded in Mark 9:2-4: "And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them . And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them . And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus ." Before their very eyes, the very appearance of Jesus was transformed from that of a fellow man to something they had never seen. Then, out of nowhere Moses and Elijah show up at the party. I imagine about this time the three men Jesus took up on that mountain either thought they were going crazy or had sipped a little too much wine. The transformation we go through as we renew our minds to the Word of God is not always as sudden or dramatic as what took place with Jesus, but in the eyes of others it can be. When Moses came down from the Mountain of God with the Law, his face shone so brightly the people had to cover it lest they be blinded. Moses was absolutely radiant due to having caught a glimpse of the glory of God and from receiving His Word. As part of a survival training I was a part of in 1975, I spent 3 days alone on a mountain near Yosemite Park with only some water and a few apples. The experience was called a solo and everyone else in the group hated it and/or cheated and slipped into the nearest town for food and warmth. Silly me, I did exactly as I was supposed to do and it was a great turning point in my life. For three days, during periods of warm sunshine and cold rain, I communed with God having only a pad of paper and a pen (no Bibles were allowed). I spent hours upon hours pulling up Bible verses in my mind and writing them down. I was astounded by how much of the Bible I had securely placed in my heart. I also meditated on the verses I would write down thinking about what they said and what they meant to me. I also spent many hours sitting on a rock or next to my fire praying. At the time I had many things weighing on my heart and one by one I let go of them and committed them to God to take care of. By the end of the third day I was filled with a peace I had never known and a joy that made me radiant. When I came back to camp, everyone said I looked like Moses coming down from the Mount. My face was shining and it was obvious to all something truly profound had happened to me, and it did. The Word of God transforms us and changes us. The Word of God dwelling in our hearts allows us to trust God more and understand His incredible love and grace in our lives. Over time, that transformation becomes a transfiguration of our thought processes and habits. We then become the new creation in Christ God says we are. We then become living, breathing and radiant epistles known and read by all men.
