Can we teach too much on one thing?
My son inadvertently brought this subject up; I latched on it because I come from a charismatic background. There is a danger when one person or a group focuses on a single (or only two or three) teachings in scripture. A distortion can happen that puts one teaching above another.
Over the years Ive seen it with tongues, sanctification, miracles, signs and wonders, prophecy, and grace (which I didnt know was possible), works, money, etc. Every time when explaining or expanding one to a higher degree misunderstanding and misconception entered when tying in other scripture to support the teaching. The focus becomes on one aspect using single (or small paragraphs of) scriptures for backing and agreement failing to remember to see and compare with the bigger picture of the full Gospel.
Problems arise when too much weight is given to other writings and when we do not hold each other accountable, by that I mean, in what the teacher, preacher, writer, and speaker says to what scripture and the Spirit say. Too many of us dont read and study our Bibles, to many of us dont take the time to learn, to listen to the Spirit that dwells in us, who will guide, teach and warn.
Im not promoting criticism of what you hear or read, remember, there is absolutely nothing wrong with going home and study comparing the hearing or reading with scripture. If a conflict arises with what is heard or read resolve it in scripture, dont put the weight on the other for resolution. Though it is important that you know and understand what you heard or read, it is more important that you know and understand what scripture says or doesnt say to what you heard or read.
What brought this up?
My son has started a new Bible study program presented by a group; some of the questions seem strange and out of place to the scripture reference being studied. He brought them to me so we could review together motive, teaching, and scripture before the next class. My thought was they are using and coming from a preachers view of a lesson given with the questions and not from a plain view of what the text is saying. Believe it or not (and Im smiling here) the two dont always go hand in hand.
This was confirmed when he questioned them in the next class, in this honesty I recommended him to continue the class being always aware of this method in their teaching. My problem is they advertise studying the Bible and only the Bible for what it says. Then giving homework with questions not related to text only answers. But the questions require one to think about the text so that is good too.
Conclusion
There is much in scripture I dont know or understand, there are times scripture says very little about something, and there are subjects scripture says so much about we have trouble wrapping our heads around all of it. One help I have learned is to have a good overall picture of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Not that youre going to see or understand everything in between but the Holy Spirit in time will help you to see the continuity from start to finish.
I have a wife as an example, she is not the least bit interested in an in-depth study, she reads the Bible from start to finish and repeats every year and it is the only way she reads the Bible. She can stand toe to toe with me on most subjects of scripture. She doesnt know the complexities or original languages, there is much she has questions about but when it comes to the Messiah and salvation dont get it wrong when talking with her is all I can say.
Please know all I am wanting to say here is remember no one gift, no one teaching, no one member, no one scripture or anything else is more important than any other, it all works together to bring glory to the Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus.
