Since the days of the early church, there has been much discussion/debate on the interpretation of scriptures. Interestingly enough, most people are insistent that the interpretation which they have been taught, studied or revealed to them one way or another is correct and everyone else... is wrong. Arguments over doctrine has not only caused division within the Body of Christ, in some instances it has caused the persecution and even death of fellow believers in Christ. Yes, we are supposed to share the Good News with others and we are supposed to share what we have learned with one another. The problem arises when we get so caught up in arguing that we forget our primary purpose. We are to be witnesses of what God has done in our lives! Are we doing that when we get into debates with others and say "Im right and youre wrong?" In education we call that "power-struggles" and when we get into a "power-struggle", the focus ceases to be on God. Instead the focus is on us. Oh, we may justify ourselves and say it is just because we desire for people to know the truth but do you know what? When you engage in a power-struggle, when you confront people in that manner, youre not fooling anyone except yourself. It is about you and your need to be right. It is an easy trap which we have all fallen into, Im afraid. Sigh... Im thinking right now of all the times my "zeal" has gotten the best of me and instead of drawing people to Christ, Ive driven them further away from Him. There is no one infallible except God. The enemy is constantly trying to get our focus off of God and onto "stuff". The enemy loves to see Christians arguing about who is right and who is not for when they do this, they are not sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with a world that desperately needs Him. When we get into power-struggles with other Christians, division occurs and division is not of God. When we get into power-struggles with non-Christians, we end up driving them off. It is interesting that when the "world" portrays a Christian in the media, it is as an aggressive, boorish character whom none of us would want anything to do with! Does it ever occur to us that perhaps the reason we are viewed like that is because that is the character we ourselves are presenting to the world? Are we reflecting a true image of Christ when we behave in this manner? That is the question we must always be asking ourselves. Are people seeing Christ... or are they seeing me? Blessings! K
