I listened to a Preacher some time ago talking about Christian Teachers and Students. How the students would take on the teachers thoughts, characteristics, and attitudes. He said the same has been shown to be true of a Preacher and the congregation.
Since most of us are not Preachers and Teachers that means most of us are carrying thoughts, characteristics, and attitudes from our Preachers and Teachers. It only seems right they should influence us to a degree after all they are to be examples to follow in our spiritual walk.
Ill be fair I know I have been highly influenced by several I have had and it takes time to filter through this influence and recover, by learning and experience, what I think and understand from the lessons. So what Im going to say next may not be best for this blog environment but may be best for better blogs within this environment.
Write and teach what you know.
Any of us can rewrite a devotional, sermon or lesson to make it sound like our own and then defend it vigorously with scripture while really having no clue to the background and subtleties of Doctrine within the original piece. We can even do worse than that. Decide we know and understand a teaching with only the bare minimal of information on it. Then share it and be wrong without knowing and of course this can grow if someone comments in a way we dont agree with because of a lack of understanding the matter.
I have seen some teachings over the years change and transform multiple times. That means the reader may not know of what period of time within the subject you may be expressing, in fact, the writer may not know also. On top of that we have a variety of Institutions with differing takes on some subjects of scripture that can cause problems between writer and reader.
Ill be the first on the chopping block; Im as guilty as others are about writing on subjects I know little or nothing about (this subject is not on my A list of things I know), and of not understanding the writer sometimes.
So what do you know?
There is a lot of information in our Bibles that can be written about that require nothing more than study and knowledge without experience. Exceptions are the subjects of the spirit. If I am going to write of the things in my spiritual walk with the Lord I can only write convincingly of the things I know about and should only write of what I know.
If all you want is knowledge I have no problem with that. Knowledge I have with access to get more from the best in the World, I have long since not been impressed with knowledge. Though I still enjoy learning and appreciate others hard work to learn. I have found it can complicate the ability to sit down and write a simple blog, so, so much for knowledge.
I would advise to seek wisdom from our Lord and savior and share it. I would rather rejoice with you in what you share from experience in spiritual matters than discuss differing thoughts of doctrine that have the chance to divide. They shouldnt, but so many of us think our way is the only right way and that thinking causes problems in this type of environment. Again, that type of thinking is often partial influence of someone else too.
Dont get me wrong I do and will write about Doctrines and about difficult passages even on hard to understand subjects. I write to share and maybe look at a subject or teaching in a way some may not have thought of before. I write to learn from my commenters: their view or opinion. I also write, now and again, to challenge my readers on various points of scripture. Careful here, they often hand it back to you with glee. Take it from me, someone who has put almost every word of scripture to a magnifying glass, it is embarrassing to be found wrong, but can still be fun if honesty prevails.
In the end I am learning if someone is flat wrong scripturally its better not to comment at all. Perhaps best to write a blog on the matter yourself. Better yet to evaluate what you do know about the subject and stay within those limits. I have had the best responses and most reads maintaining that boundary.
Remember we can also write on many other subjects than just the Bible. Experiment with a few of these for something you know and enjoy the comments.
