Hearing the Word of God without any benefit

the word which they heard did not profit them - Hebrews 4:2 (Peshitta)

Every so often I will listen to The Word of Promise audiobible instead of some music, while I am working. Yesterday I started at Galatians and made it to the end of Hebrews 3. Today when I started it back up, at chapter 4, the above section of verse 2 caught my attention.

The Word was heard but it did not do anything.

Stop and think about that. Really. Stop. Think about that.

Most of us know that the Holy Text is filled with life changing wisdom. Most of us have probably read the Bible through a few times. Most of us have probably had something we have read (or heard) change us spiritually.

But what if you were to sit down and read the entire Bible, or listen to the entire Bible, and not have it change you.

What would that mean?

The first part of Hebrews 4:2 states:

For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them;

What if you went to church for months, or even years, and sit there and listen to the preacher and not have the preached Word change your life?

What if you sat at home and turned on preacher-tv and listened and it did not spiritually change your life?

What if you sat in your car, or on the train to work, listening to the audio bible, and it did not spiritually change your life?

What would that mean?

The final part of Hebrews 4:2 tells us:

because it was not mixed with faith in those who heard it.

What would it mean if you were to hear the Word of God, or listen to the word of God, and not be changed?

It would mean you have no faith.

Stop. And think about that too.

Nice to read a blog from you and a good one as well. Thanks this is worth digesting.

I agree with John Knox (@watchmanjohn) in that it is very good to read a blog from you. I agree with both comments in that this is something worth thinking about and even asking the hard questions. Am I digesting the Word of God? Am I applying it to my life? Am I a doer of the Word of God?
