Do you say what you mean and mean what you say?

Each one of us has choices to make every day. We decide when to get up, what to wear, whether to eat cereal or toast and so on. Most choices are relatively minor and have little impact on our lives. But, there are choices we must make which many times influence the course of our lives for years or more. These choices demand certain principles be honored or the results can be catastrophic.

No doubt, the biggest choice we make in life is whether to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Obviously this choice is the most important of them all due to the eternal ramifications. A person who arrogantly announces to the world their disdain for Christianity and who mocks the very idea of a need for a Savior succeeds in announcing to the world they are a fool. They will pay dearly for their warped choice both now and forever.

The choice of a husband or wife is probably the second greatest choice we make in this life assuming the marriage is to last a lifetime. It is a huge decision who one plans to spend the rest of their life married to. It is absolutely NOT one to be made lightly or on a whim. Far too often people rush into marriage based upon "feelings" or sexual attraction. "Feelings" come and go and the fire of sexual attraction tends to dim with time. The criteria for determining one’s lifelong spouse needs to be more than whether the person is "hot".

How having a child ever made it into the category of being a choice I will never know. Yet, of all the issues which divide people (especially women), the idea of it being the choice of a woman to decide if she is going to have a baby once pregnant is absolute insanity. In a bigger sense, this issue shows just how meaningless choices have become for many people.

Recently brother "arisensleeper" did a series on the salt covenant. The idea of covenants having any lasting value or really meaning anything is a foreign concept to most people. Just as many believe that rules are made to be broken, so many believe covenants are worth no more than the paper they are printed upon.

A covenant is supposed to be a solemn and binding agreement between all parties. A covenant is a contract that is legally binding. A covenant is not to be confused with a handshake or a promise to do something. I am reminded of various contractors who say they will get a job done and have it finished by a certain date. Those promises are just words and are nothing but lies to get the job.

Jesus made this all very simple when he said in Matthew 5:37 from the English Standard Version:

"Let what you say be simply 'Yes or No'; anything more than this comes from evil."

Giving our word should be viewed as a contract and thus be binding. When we say we are going to do something, we need to do it and not make a truckload of excuses when we don’t. We really need for our words to be "seasoned with salt" so that we mean what we say and say what we mean. This is why major choices need to be prayed about and thought out completely. In serious matters of the heart and that involve other people, we need to be VERY careful and not flippant in our decisions.

I leave you with some verses from Ecclesiastes which really need to be pondered. From the New Living Translation, please let these words from Ecclesiastes 5:2, 4 and 5 have a place in your heart:

"And don't make rash promises to God, for he is in heaven, and you are only here on earth. So let your words be few.

So when you make a promise to God, don't delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him.

It is better to say nothing than to promise something that you don't follow through on."

How very true.. the problem with us nowadays is embracing the concept of 'talks are cheap' bec most of the time words are just uttered and not meant... or even laced with "I was just joking...!!??"

Words are like water being poured out and can't be retrieved...our words can build or can tear down..therefore, we should also learn to put a guard over our mouth ie words that proceed from our mouth are filtered and bring fruits; lest we be found to be carriers of careless words liken to be empty cymbals..

indeed let our yes be yes and our no be no...period!!...

The question in your title is one which needs to be taken to heart and we should be asking it of ourselves constantly. We need to thoughtfully consider the words which come out of our mouths far more than we do, I'm afraid.

Very good blog. But nobody ever decides anything for himself or herself. No can receive anything unless it granted from above. John the Baptist. And person can ever come to Christ on his own strength. Let turn to Ephesians 2:1-5,

["... 1And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

3Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

4But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)...]

God has quickened us, because we were DEAD in traspasses and sins...And we walked following our real father the devil the prince who rules all spirits in the world in disobedience...We were full of lust of mind and flesh and completely condemed by God, God really hated us...But God in his MERCY and LOVE, in his grace brought us from our captivity unable to come to Christ...

And further,

["... 18For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

19Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

20And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;...]

For in only one way, Christ have we access to the Father, theres not other way. Those outside do not have access to God unless their mind freed by the Holy Spirit.

And finally,

In 2Timothy 2:25-26,

["... 25In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

26And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will...]

I suppose we should be kind and gentle to those outside who oppose, praying that God has a kind moment and GRANT them repentace to accept Christ and the bible, and escape from him who has held them captive to do his will in all things- the Devil...

But real freedom doesn't exist for the human soul. The only hope is the word of God, only the truth can set a person free. Only the Christ can set a person free...What ever a person has decided to before Christ has been decided for him or her by, and to fulfill the purpose of the Devil, the prince of this world...Blessings!

Very, very well written. Amen!

I read about that the measure of a person is in the choices he or she made in difficult times. Yes, I agree with you, that some of our choices have been meaningless. We made rash promises to get out of a fix. There is no such thing as word of honor. There are less and less promises that are kept. Man has remained the same so faithless, just as during the time of the covenants God made with the people of Israel. God does not change. He remains faithful to his promises, even if we are not... How fortunate are we to have God...

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. Mark 13:31.
His Word will not Fail

"God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent.
Has He said, and will He not do?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?"

Numbers 23:19 [NKJV]

God speaks and it is done
We have to hold on to the promise God is giving us
We cannot let go no matter how dim or dark or tough
You have to hold on and press your way through till the end

But if you doubt the word God gave, that is where you fail
When God gives us a Word and we doubt and waiver
We cannot blame God
For a double minded person shall not receive anything from the Lord

Is there anything too hard for God to do?
Is there anything too big?
The impossible is possible with God
Whoever says to this mountain be removed and cast into the sea
And does not doubt
But believes in those things
It shall be done

And whatsoever you ask and pray you shall receive it
Ask in prayer, ask single-minded
And believe what you ask for and you shall receive it
For God is faithful

"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful." Hebrews 10:23 [NKJV]

People not holding true to what they say, is something I've been through this year. It's the worst feeling in the world when someone goes back on every single thing they ever told you, and you trusted what they said, and trusted them with your heart. Even if they go back on the smallest thing, it can have the largest impact on you. When people don't hold true to things they say, or mean them, I think trust issues will tend to arise, and could be a problem in your future. It's sad that a lot of people don't mean what they say... they'll never realize how much it hurts the people around them when they go back on their word.

blessings2you, there is not much I can say that has not been said in all the comments above. -And I agree with all of them. Amen, Amen, & Amen!

We live in a world of throw-away relationships, throw-away marriages where a promise is mostly words spoken to accomplish a purpose - get the job, sell the car, seduce the girl, etc..

All we can do as Christians is proudly proclaim who we serve, and honor His name by being honest and truthful, and living a life of integrity.

God Bless!
