God is our Father not our "godfather"

In many respects, that which separates the Christian faith from other religions is the emphasis placed upon RELATIONSHIP instead of the adherence to rules and regulations. The ability to have and grow into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ should be not only something we appreciate but something we treasure and cling to with all our heart.

The father of our faith is Abraham. That which separates Abraham from others is not how well he followed a set of regulations but rather the strength of his personal faith in so much that he totally believed the Word of God given to him. Abraham believed God and that faith enabled him to be the father of many nations.

Going through religious motions does not impress God. God does not have a giant spreadsheet where He keeps track of how many times each day we pray, how many words of His Holy Book we read or how many good deeds we perform. Of course God wants us to do these things for He knows we will be blessed if we do, but they do not define our faith.

Does God need our money in order to carry out His duties as the Almighty? Of course not. He urges us to give because He instituted the law of sowing and reaping. Does God need us to pray so that He can take of needs? Of course not. God urges us to pray so that we learn to lean on Him and trust Him as our Father and Provider.

When actions become law, religion is formed and when Christianity is turned into religion the very heart of our faith is ripped out. Religious Christianity has no heart and without heart, our faith is cold and nothing more than a system of dead works.

As much as I despise how some use the grace of God as a cover for sin, I despise even more those who use the Word of God as a means to enslave and captivate people. As horrible as the Epicurean philosophy of "eat, drink and make merry for tomorrow we may die" is, the ugly enslavement of Stoicism which strips away all emotion and turns people into stones is worse.

When we get saved, God does not demand we turn into either weasels or moles. God wants us to be as children who have just heard the bell announcing recess. He wants us to thoroughly enjoy the life He makes available to us when we trust Him and develop the intimate relationship with Him He craves.

God wants our HEART and not some system of religious ritual. God wants us to love Him, lean on Him and trust Him enough to believe His Word to us. God wants us to live the life He has given free from the condemnation and enslavement of legalism. God wants us to be "good boys and girls" because we love Him and not because we tremble in fear of Him. God is our Father not our godfather .

I enjoyed your message. By adding one more letter, one could say that God is not our godfather, but our good Father. - bibleguy6

B2Y, Exactly! It's all about our RELATIONSHIP with Him. Thank you for this important message. I especially liked:

"As much as I despise how some use the grace of God as a cover for sin, I despise even more those who use the Word of God as a means to enslave and captivate people."

AND

"When we get saved, God does not demand we turn into either weasels or moles. God wants us to be as children who have just heard the bell announcing recess. He wants us to thoroughly enjoy the life He makes available to us when we trust Him and develop the intimate relationship with Him He craves."
