Standing on the beach I was mesmerized by the tide as the waves relentlessly rolled in and then went back out. The ebb and flow of the tides provide an excellent teaching lesson regarding life. Very rarely, if ever, is every day the same when living for Christ. It seems as though there are times of peace and times of conflict, times of joy and times of sorrow, times of being busy and times of rest.
Over the years, I have been a part of many “revivals”. Very few of these revivals were in a tent, a church or a stadium. Most of these times of renewed interest, reawakening or rekindling of the fire within came through spending quality time with my Lord or His people. It seems to me, as I think about this, that once again, there has been an ebb and flow to these times over the years.
God says in Ecclesiastes that there is a time for everything and everything has its time. Certainly most of us enjoy the changing of the seasons and the change from hot to cold. I enjoy watching the moon as it waxes and wanes. Personally, I am thankful that in this life everyday is not exactly the same but holds the potential of being new and exciting.
Even in times of trouble, there is the hope that everything will get better. Even in times of grief there is the hope that one day that grief will be replaced with great joy. Even in times of sickness, there is the hope that one day we will have a perfect body never again subject to disease or death.
The ebb and flow of life is what makes it rich and rewarding. Knowing that God is sovereign and in control brings with it a great peace that no matter how dire things appear, in due season they will change. That which allows us to remain sane in this life is the knowledge that in due time, the tide will roll in again.
I have a piece of paper taped to my computer monitor which I wrote on while going through cancer treatment. It says:
[verse=Psalm 71:14]But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more![/verse]
Yes, life has it's ebb and flow and yet through it all God is there.

Indeed it is!
