4But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
Our God's wealth is not measured in how much gold He owns or how many cattle He has but rather in His mercy and love. God is indeed RICH in mercy and His love is GREAT toward us. All discussions regarding the fiery judgment of God and the vengeance He will soon take upon this world must be tempered with the reality that our God is RICH in mercy and His love is truly GREAT.
How rich is God's mercy? Even when we were dead through our trespasses He saved us by and through His grace. How great is the love of God wherewith He loved us? Go great that even when we were dead because of our sins, He saved us by and through His grace. It is a true saying and worthy of our eternal praise that God's grace, mercy and love was, is and always will be greater than our sin.
Because of God's grace, mercy and love, He did and will do the following according to these verses in Ephesians 2:
- Quickened us together with Christ
- Saved us by His grace
- Raised us up together
- Made us to sit together inheavenly places in Christ Jesus
God did these four things so that in the ages to come, He would be able to show (manifest) the EXCEEDING RICHES of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Please think for a moment about what is being said here. Due to God being rich in mercy and because of His great love toward us, in Christ Jesus He made us alive, saved us by His grace, raised us up and made us to sit with HIM in the heavenly places. Pretty good stuff, isn't it!!
BUT, as great as all this is (and as Tony the Tiger would say, it is GREAT), in the ages to come, God will manifest THE EXCEEDING RICHES OF HIS GRACE IN HIS KINDNESS TOWARD US THROUGH CHRIST JESUS (pardon the all caps, but this verse excites me). I believe Ephesians 1:7 should be engraved upon our hearts and minds for it represents the fullness of how much God loves us and the very essence of our hope.
Ephesians 1:7 is such a key verse in understanding the entire epistle of Ephesians, I have decided to spend as much time as it takes to dig into this verse (and verses 4-6) and examine each word as to its meaning and usage. If you share in my excitement about what God has done, is doing and will do because of His grace, mercy, kindness and love; I urge you to check back in the days to come as we seek to unlock the door to understanding these verses.

The VERY best is yet to come!
