If the Word of God is not our standard for righteousness, than what is? If the Word of God is not our source for understanding our faith, than what is? If the Word of God is not the final authority, than what is?
God gave us His Word so that we have a way to know Him. Without an understanding of God’s heart, we are doomed to failure as wander aimlessly in this world. If the Word of God is not our basis for understanding the will of God, we will inevitably fall into endless debates and constant conflict.
God is spirit. For humans to see, grasp and understand God He must communicate His will in ways we can see, hear, touch and feel. Jesus Christ was the Word of God manifested in the flesh. He could be seen, listened to and even touched. The Bible is the Word of God manifested in writing. It can be read, studied and learned.
Far too many times Christians allow the things of life to diminish their respect and admiration for the Word of God. Far too many times experience, philosophy and even theology are allowed to trump the Word of God when it comes to authority. Far too many times pride and arrogance surface and squash the simple truths found in the Word of God.
If we do not go to the Word of God to see and understand God, we will end up making our own gods out of what we see and have in the world. For thousands of years, people have worshipped the sun and moon as gods for they can see them and therefore believe in them. Idols are simply a tangible way for people to be able to see, touch and even talk to their god.
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him .”
God is spirit and thus it takes faith to come to Him and believe that He exists. Faith in God is simply the belief in His existence and that what He has said is indeed true. Faith in the Word of God is the foundation for the entire 11th chapter of Hebrews. Each person mentioned believed (had faith in) the Word of God to be true and literally staked their lives upon that belief.
The Word of God is not merely words on a page to be intellectually studied or endlessly debated. The Word of God is THE standard for truth. The Word of God is to respected for what it is, and that is the external manifestation of the will of Almighty God. The Word of God defines who God is, what God demands and wants and everything that pertains to life and godliness.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart .”
While I always have been aware of the power of the Word of God, nothing drove it home more than when I was unable to communicate with the world around me. Unable to even think, the very Word of God was "breathed" over me in the back of an ambulance and amazingly (or not), I was able to focus on that.
In ICU, unaware of who I was or what was happening, I suddenly found myself able to feel a bracelet being slipped over my wrist and though I could really see nothing else, I could read the words upon it. The bracelet said: "Trust in the Lord Ps. 3:5". and though I did not even know where I was or that I was sick, the thought came to my mind that I was going to be well again.
Later, I believed that incident occurred on Wednesday evening and I started interacting with the world again on Thursday. I mentioned to my husband that I began to get better as soon as that bracelet was slipped on my wrist and I read those words. There was silence for a moment before my husband spoke. Then he said, "There is something you need to know. You didn't get that on Wednesday night. It was on the Friday after your surgery and I was able to get a couple of friends into ICU to see you.
While I would not "wake up" for another six days, I believe that I was healed then as I read God's precious Word. To me this is a reminder that we do not always see visible signs of what God is doing but we can always trust Him. There is nothing more powerful than the Word of God!
Hebrews 4:12 a descriptive verse . There are times for me a bible passage will sink in at a later time then at the moment of reading it. Its dividing, and discerning the thoughts and the intent of my precepts hidden in me. The later can be hours, days, weeks, even in my case, years after reading it. The actual event is truely liberating. I'm draw closer to the personhood of the heart of God, then the loneliness found in the concepts of veiwing through me. Thanks for the re-enforcement picture. Sincerely, Tim
Good blog. "If the Word of God is not our standard for righteousness, than what is? If the Word of God is not our source for understanding our faith, than what is? If the Word of God is not the final authority, than what is?" Very well said. It seems that, unfortunately, people will substitute all kinds of things for the authority and truth of the Bible. I guess there is a need within us to follow something higher than ourselves. If people would study the Bible, they would see that it is divinely inspired. - bibleguy64
