What proof do we have that there is a God? This question has baffled mankind ever since he was kicked out of the Garden of Eden. In his attempt to see and feel god, man has made idols of stone and wood for centuries. These idols succeeded only in giving their "masters" a false sense of security because they had no power and could not communicate with them.
It did not take long for man to deduce that if he made the idol, he was the god of the god he made. So, instead of making a god he could see and touch; in reality, man's idols were nothing more than objects he was the god of.
Idolatry is a very serious issue. Without question, the one thing Almighty God detests the most is idolatry among His people. I believe God more or less rolls His eyes when He sees the world's idolatry because these people do not know Him or claim to be His own. But, when God's people put other gods before Him; because God is a jealous God, He gets angry.
An idol can be a statue, sculpture, person, obsessive hobby or even one's paycheck. Anything or anyone who becomes more important than God runs a risk of becoming a person's idol.
Early mankind looked up and saw the sun during the day and the moon at night. He assumed those bright objects were deity and he worshipped them as gods. As in most cases, this idolatry was triggered by the need to see the god one is worshipping instead of trust and faith.
In the Bible, idols were generally man-made monuments hued of stone or wood that memorialized an event, person or location. These monuments were given names and became gods to the people who worshipped them. Idolatry among God's people is different than the pagan idolatry practiced by the unbelievers whose gods were generally mythological creatures invented by wizards etc.
Our God is not made of stone or wood and since He is spirit, He cannot be seen. Moses nearly died when he saw the "hind parts" of God when He passed by on the mount. The disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration surely thought they would die as they witnessed the glorious event transpiring before them.
No man has seen God at any time except Jesus Christ. As we look to Jesus, the glory of God radiates and transforms us just as the glory of God transformed Moses so that his face shone when he came off that mountain.
What proof do we have that there is a God? We need no further proof than the radiance we manifest when we look at Him through His Word. As we turn our eyes upon Jesus and look full in His wonderful face, the doubts fall away and we are filled with His glory and grace so we can shine as lights in this crooked and perverse world in which we live.
No question, if we consider the heavens and the earth, there is a Supreme Designer! Because we can see these things, we should reach no other conclusion. Yet, people do. They don't like the idea that they are "slaves to righteousness" if they obey God's will. They want to follow there own desires. They want to be the "boss." So they create gods of which they can be master...
Sadly, they will come to know the folly of their thinking one day. God IS God, period! He deserves our loyality, He demands it, and rightly so. The love He gives us through faith in Christ Jesus is far more than anything WE deserve. God be praised for His unconditional love!
Thanks for the message,
You bring up a very good point about "idols" not having to be an image or wood, stone or precious metals for that matter. They can also be things like fame, wealth, possessions and even people.
