Feature Added (Premier/Gold Members Only): Featured Blogs Updated

Hello everybody,

Two points for this news update: One feature for Gold Members and one feature for both Gold & Premier Members!

Both of them have been pushed out rather quickly based upon feedback from the ChristianBlog.Com Community over the last 24-48 hours.

We hope that they do not cause any conflicts and that they work properly and as-exacted. Please let us know if you have any issues with them.

For Gold Members Only:

For those of you who are Gold Members:

We have a feature update that we released a few minutes ago that has been an on-going discussion over the last few days by a large majority of our Gold Members to "have more than one Featured Blog at a time."

After allowing public feedback by our Gold Members it was decided to allow them this ability.

As can be seen within these two screenshots the feature is now fully working:

For Premier & Gold Members:

For those of you who are Premier Members:

We have also had requests by both Premier Members and Gold Members to allow them the ability to "unset" one of their "Featured Blog" after a few days.

Again, after allowing public feedback by both Premier and Gold Members we have decided to allow this - but with some restrictions.

As of a few minutes ago when you go to your "Manage Featured Blogs" page you will now notice a new area within the "Active Featured Blog Entries" section that says "Remove", and will have a value of either "unavailable" or "remove".

What we are going to do is force all newly set Featured Blogs to not be removed for 3-days (4,320 minutes, or 259,200 seconds, to be technically accurate). By forcing a three-day non-removal timeline we feel we can best prevent overall abuse balanced with at least enough time to help you judge if your newly set Featured Blog is going to produce the results you had hoped it would.

As always, we welcome feedback by all of our Gold & Premier Members on both of these new features.

Blessings,

D'Oh!!

Ok I missed up the code for allowing Gold / Premier Members to disable/remove a Featured Blog... but thanks to some help from [member=arisensleeper]arisensleeper[/member] we got it all fixed.

Sorry for those of you who are premier members and didn't seem to have access to this... my bad...

Hello,

Thank you for the ability to remove a Featured Blog after three days. Sometimes it is obvious that a blog is just not going to attract any attention.

Yes, I do agree that sometimes there is an obvious need to remove a Featured Blog. There is discussion for whether it should be 3 days or 5 days. Once a decision is made I will notify the public.

Hi Jon,

I would like to change my current Featured Blog and it has been about 3 days already, yet it tells me that I cannot change till another 4 days. According to your original blog the time frame was suppose to be 3 days, or did I misunderstand?
As of a few minutes ago when you go to your "Manage Featured Blogs" page you will now notice a new area within the "Active Featured Blog Entries" section that says "Remove", and will have a value of either "unavailable" or "remove".

Sorry, I thought you had already done this because you had said, "As of a few minutes ago...". Was not complaining, just thought I did not understand how to do things right.

My bad.

Well, if it is displaying that messages, and it has been 4 days... I guess I did something wrong (again)

Works like a charm now John, thanks!

Hello All,

It has now been just over one month since we started allowing two (2) Featured Blogs per Premier/Gold Member.

I was wondering what everybody thinks of the increasing long and longer "featured blog" sections on the home pages.

It is typically between 15 and 20 entries, and it has passed the 20 blogs a couple of times.

Do you feel this has created an unacceptable amount of scrolling to get to the information further down the pages?

That was always going to be "the issue" with allowing multiple Featured Blog Entries, and I think enough time has passed now since we started allowing it, to give everybody a good idea of this situation. I promised I would bring this issue back into the public awareness after a short while. That time has arrived.

Thank you,

John,

I like this feature and also think that the God Members are certainly entitled to this small extra feature. It take only one click on the scroll bar or one rotation of the scroll wheel to bypass this section. Those who are posting multiple blogs are among our most interesting writers. Keep this feature.

I also was mildly opposed to allowing featured blogs to be removed after three days. Now I am perhaps the most frequent user of this feature, often updating my own featured blog within minutes of when it become available.

As I review things, the featured blog section is becoming longer because more people have joined the Gold/Premier ranks, or more of them are using this section, than it is because of multiple entries by Gold members. The featured blog section is a GREAT incentive for those who write frequently to become Gold or Premier members.

Shalom,

John:

If I read this correctly, only Gold members are to have the ability to post multiple featured blogs. Yet I see that some Premier members also have multiple blogs posted. Others, myself included, seem not to be able to post multiple blogs even with Premier membership.

Not sure, but appears to be something with the "Make this a featured blog" click box on the blog entry page.

As addressed immediately above, this does make the "featured blog" section longer, removes a benefit of Gold level membership and for those who care, gives and "edge" for readership to those posting multiple featured blogs.

I may be confused on something here, but things should be consistent.

Thanks, John.

I was re-reading this again as well. If only gold members are permitted to have multiple feature blogs, this certainly is not happening. As of right now, four gold members have featured blogs. Three gold members have two featured blogs posted and one gold member has one posted. Yet in the featured blogs section I also see multiple feature blogs for two other members who are listed as being premier members not gold members.

Art wrote:
As addressed immediately above, this does make the "featured blog" section longer, removes a benefit of Gold level membership and for those who care, gives and "edge" for readership to those posting multiple featured blogs.
I guess I thought it was a feature available to all premier/gold members but I agree with Art. If this feature is indeed available to premier as well as gold members, it does remove a benefit for gold members. I did not realize until Art said something that some premier members were unable to post two featured blogs.

I would also like to add that while I was in favor of two featured blogs initially, with the addition of it being available to premier members as well as gold, the section has become, shall we say, rather lengthy. As a result, I find myself reading those blogs less and less.

I like the featured blog section and have often used it to pull up old favorites of mine for a new audience. I would hate to see it go away but I do think perhaps it should be only one blog per gold/premier member or two blogs per gold member and one per premier member.

Blessings!

Hi John,

I have to agree with both Art and Kathy in that being able to post two featured blogs should only be for Gold Members. And allow only one featured blog for Premier Members, even though I am only a Premier Member. It just seems a lot more fair to Gold Members.

So, sometimes this website gets too big for me to remember every little detail...

You all are saying that what was indicated in this blog is that Gold Members can have 2... yet the way the website is working now, is that Premier Members are able to have 2 as well... even though only Gold Members are suppose to have 2.

Am I understanding that right?

And, if I am... you all want me to "fix" it... even though it would mean those of you who are Premier Members would loose the advantage...

I will do what the community wants... somebody just needs to drop the lines between the dots for me on this one... my mind is obviously somewhere else I think...

I think the point trying to be made goes back to establishing certain privileges that come with levels of financial contribution. The Gold standard, so to speak, was to carry with it things which made it appealing and desirous. One of those things was the the ability to have multiple Featured Blogs.

Like many things; too much of a good thing dilutes its ability to be special. Having 25 Featured Blogs tends to add so many to the section that it is hard to separate them out.

For what it is worth, I vote to return to ONE Featured Blog per week unless a person has established themselves as a true partner of this site by becoming a Gold member. Then they should be allowed to have more than one Featured Blog as a fringe benefit of their commitment to the site.

John:

I do support two featured blogs for Gold Members only. I think they deserve that distinction.

As to the current situation, as a Premier Member I either can't publish more than one featured blog or I haven't figured out how to do it. It can't be done via the "manage featured blogs" page.

And we realize that it's a huge challenge to keep up with everything. That;s never a problem, my Brother...

That's what you've got us for!

Art

@kreynolds
K Reynolds @kreynolds ·

This is tough because as a gold member, I will still be able to post two featured blogs but I think B2Y is right and the premier members who have commented on this blog seem to think so as well.
I agree there can be too much of a good thing.

Hello Everybody,

I wanted to give myself a bit of time to think this through.

To be honest, I was not even aware that I had changed the code to make it so Premier Members had the same access privileges until somebody mentioned it to me - it was not intentional.

Once it was done though, it was/is sort of like trying to take candy back from a politician - you have to be very care about it.

I will keep most of my thoughts on this matter to myself, and stand firm in what I have always said: Those who help pay the bills the most have the most say in how things work here.

So with that in mind, I have made the necessary changes (hopefully they work) to limit having two (2) Premier Features to Gold Members only.

Please note that this does not effect any existing Featured Blogs. I will not handy-cap somebody for a decision after the fact.

Thank you to everybody who has provided feedback about this matter.
