You are the Best Judge.. listen to what others say.. but do what you want to do..
(NIV) 1 John 4:1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Two most common mistakes we do are - not beingready to listen to what other person is saying, and the next one is doing exactly what other person is saying.
But to me what works the best is to listen to what the other person is saying, but do what I think I want to do. The reason why I listen to the other person is, to ensure and validate to see if that is a message from God, and when I pray and meditate about what they said, and let the Holy Spirit guide me with what is right.Itis my action guided by the Spirit which determines what they said is applicable to me or not.Sometimes what the Holy Spirit directs me to do is exactly what the other person told me to do. And sometimes as per the guidance of the Spirit, I might be contradicting with what the other person said.
I rely on the wisdom provided by the Holy Spirit to assess the next steps. If I know that I have followed what the other person said, I need to ensure that I am constantly listening to the other person and to my Spirit to get the right direction and what I want to exactly do.
Some people really come into our lives and when we listen to them, we can see our lives changing in a very positive way. We should not ignore such people or their words as God brings in those people (His messengers) into our lives to pass on His message. But the confirmation of whether that person is really a messenger of God is again from the Holy Spirit who is inside us.

and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding
