An All Powerful God

Isa. 46: 9 - 11 - '… for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, … My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose, … I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it.'

The Lord is dealing with incorrect ideas of Him. In the late 1970's, a shift to speaking on the love of God occurred.  Remembering fire and brimstone preaching from the '60's brought fear and trembling but lost in the fever pitch … the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  In God's love while yet sinners, Christ the Lord and sinless Lamb died in my place. Satisfying the perfect justice a holy God requires.

The pendulum swung to hearing of God's love. Missing were the attributes of God Almighty, El Shaddai like His righteousness, wrath, holiness, hatred of sin and wickedness.  This brought about a view of the Lord being warm, soft, and fuzzy. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Jer. 32:27 - "Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?"

Salvation is the mightiest of God's work. Christ Jesus, God in flesh humbled Himself to The Father taking the form of man and drinking the entire cup of fierce wrath for sin. What a powerful and awesome Savior!  His love is a mighty, firm, and sustaining one. Yes He is kind, gentle, and tender hearted with mercies new each morning for His Name's Sake but not weak.

Jesus prayer for the cup to pass had nothing to do with a horrible death on a Roman cross, lashes, plucking of beard, or crown of thorns. If there was any other way a just sacrifice for sin could be met let it be … though not My will but Thy be done.

Numbers 23:19 - God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind.  Has he said, and will he not do it?  Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

Holiness is the only characteristic of God mentioned three times in one sentence. (Isa. 6:3, Rev. 4:8)  So how do we balance a holy, righteous, and wrathful God with the radical statement of I John, 'God is love?'  Always be mindful of:

  • Our condition apart from Christ - dead in sin living for mind, body, and flesh (Eph. 2:1,2)
  • By nature children of wrath (Eph. 2:3)
  • Unable to please the Father in anything (John 15:5)
  • In Christ forgiven, a new creation, justified, clean, near to God (Eph. 1:7, II Cor. 5:17, Rom. 5:1, I Cor. 6:11, Eph. 2:13)
  • Accepted, sealed, made holy and risen in Him (Eph. 1:6,13, Col. 1:22, Col. 3:1)

Only an all-powerful, perfect Redeemer can accomplish these things and much, much more.

Zeph. 3:17 - The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love
