Joshua 24: 14, 15 – Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD (NASB)
Joshua calls the children of God to choose. Father Abraham's idol's before called from the Ur of the Chaldean's. Egyptian gods who they began to worship while in captivity or current gods of the Amorites. Each represents gods we wrestle with in our lives, by being born with a sin nature and raised in a fallen world:
An idol in my southern protestant fathers was work ethic. The psychiatrist who identified and diagnosed workaholics in the late 1970's, tried explaining the profound unhealthiness. Western culture values productivity, yet consequences exist when an 'addiction.' The results are avoidance of relationships and identity defined in vocation. Me working 60 - 80 hour weeks for +20 years in high technology industry to be outsourced was devesating. Being forced to face the problem, I am created for relationship and worship. When job was lost, so was self with relationship and worship of 'career.'. The ingrained long held god leaft lacking. One only God can fulfill while also using the Body of Christ relationally.
Growing up in an unconducive environment, anger and abandonment became gods from years spent in slavery. The 'silent treatment' was given for days when young. In a show of disapproval it was 'deafening.' Growing older the sense of abandonment grew. Displeasure now became direct emotional and verbal assault. My response became fight or flight. Coupled with hereditary depressive and anxiety disorders, these two gods from days of slavery are still being uprooted by Christ Jesus today. As I choose to allow Him and be obedient.
The current gods of western culture are starkly visible. Wealth, fame, sex, possessions, sports, etc. In my life the cultural god of greatest fear is to slowly become penniless, dying utterly alone (wealth). Christ's call is simple.
Joshua 24:15 – As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD! ( NASB)
Each god(s) of past, slavery, or culture must be submitted to The Lord for removal, destruction, and replacement with His Spirit. Not allowing this to occur keeps one in bondage and unable to fight as a soldier of the Lord. Allowing elimination but not fully committed to His Spirit's replacement, the state becomes worse than before cleansed.
Luke 11:24 – 26 When a corrupting spirit is expelled from someone, it drifts along through the desert looking for an oasis, some unsuspecting soul it can bedevil. When it doesn't find anyone, it says, 'I'll go back to my old haunt.' On return, it finds the person swept and dusted, but vacant. It then runs out and rounds up seven other spirits dirtier than itself and they all move in, whooping it up. That person ends up far worse than if he'd never gotten cleaned up in the first place
Regardless of past, present or level of spiritual maturity, all must continually be on guard as the enemy pings propensities of influence from past gods of our lives. Each must remain so significantly teachable, sincerely held beliefs and convictions may sincerely be corrected by God when shown incorrect. In the final analysis it is God alone we worship, crying Abba Father. (Rom. 8:15) Then we will join the chorus of Revelation 7: 9 – 12
After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; and they cry out with a loud voice, saying, " Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb." And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying," Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever. Amen."
This above is a stark contrast from the children of Israel's departure. Let ours not be the same as set forth in Jerimiah 2: 12, 13:
Has a nation changed gods when they were not gods? But My people have changed their glory For that which does not profit. "Be appalled, O heavens, at this, and shudder, be very desolate," declares the LORD. "For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, to hew for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water. (NASB)
Hold fast to Christ. Choose to work and permit Him to eradicate all gods other than The Lord, gods of our fathers, slavery from sin, or culture. Removed through the power of the cross and indwelling Holy Spirit. He will change and renew how we dictate our thoughts and behavior with cooperation. Christ controls and is victorious. We also give thanks for brethren cheering us on in grace.
The Lord made clear I must attempt three times to resolve any offense. The blog, In Him All Things Hold Together, God considered a start but passive, leaving to you contacting. Now per Matthew 5:23, 24:
Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering. (NASB)
I shall send friend requests and mails, attempting to identify offense(s) and remedy. My desire is forgiveness, restoration, and renewal of fellowship. There is no excuse of medical condition or medication. I am not so far gone in coherency of thought, to recognize words were written thoughtlessly and with damage. I am truly sorry and grieved believing done so. The proverbial 'elephant on the table' needs to be addressed by me. I will obey Christ's command. Your consideration in Him is gratefully sought.
AS you walk this journey that the Holy Spirit is leading you through I rejoice that I am counted as one who is witnessing this pathway that you are treading for it is true that the word of God is a light to our path and a guard to our steps as we grow unto unto him who is our head; Christ himself.
