Being an effective parent can seem overwhelming to most parents these days. Through the constant barrage of technological advances that make our children incredibly mobile, their exposure to all kinds of influences via robust social networks, and a society that encourages us to do whatever makes us feel good, how can Christian parents lead and not follow? How can they keep God in their home? The Bible refers to the devil as our adversary, and his goal is to seek to devour us (see 1 Peter 5:8). He wants to attack our home and destroy our marriage and the entire family. He can use all of the things I mentioned above to accomplish his end. But here is a novel idea: the Word of God, properly applied, still works and causes us to prevail. The question is, how can we use the Word of God to protect our home from the onslaught of our society? First of all, it has to start with the parents. Consider what God said to the parents prior to taking His people into the Promised Land: "These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts"€ (Deuteronomy 6:6, NIV). The parents are the spiritual leaders of their home. Imagine if your pastor, being the overseer of the local congregation, did not have the Word of God in his heart. Such a church would have no chance of success. The same is true for parents as spiritual leaders of their home. Secondly, God said, "Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road... " (verse 7). Clearly, from this verse, God is not talking about some passive teaching to our children. Rather, we parents must diligently teach the Word of God to our children. We must openly talk about the Bible around our home. This is not a call to fanaticism or legalism but to loving diligence. As God continued speaking to the parents, He said, "Be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt" (verse 12). The reason He said this was because He was about to take them to a land flowing with milk and honey, a land with houses they had not built, and vineyards they had not planted, and wells they had not dug (see verse 11). You see, parents, as we walk with the Lord and He blesses us, one of the ways that we safeguard ourselves and our children from forgetting the Lord is by first getting the Word deep into our heart, and then diligently teaching them to our children. People who have a deep relationship with the Lord can enjoy His blessings without forgetting Him. God also said to the parents, "Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you" (verse 14). You see, when God brought His people into the Promised Land, He did not drive all of the inhabitants out. Those who remained were serving their own gods. The Israelites back then were where we are today. At school, at work, on the park, on the Internet, wherever, our children are exposed to people who serve other gods. The only way we can safeguard our children from this land of unlimited gods is by getting the Word of God in our hearts, and then diligently teaching the same to our children. When we obey God in this regard, He will bless our efforts, protecting our home from the onslaught of this society. Frank King
This is the 2nd blog I've read about taking care of the children! Yes -a healthy realation with the Lord and sharing God's Word, lovingly! Thanks for sharing and God Bless you mightily! Dave
Brother Frank, yes it is so essential to teach our children about God and to be examples of His love and His character. Yet I know of Christians who do not tell their children about Jesus. They tell them about education, about finance, about their life and their future plans. But nothing about God.
They leave the teachings to the Church, to the Sunday School teachers. How sad !! True teachings come from the home, from the examples set by their parents and by their parents talking unceasingly about the goodness of God. "Imagine if your pastor, being the overseer of the local congregation, did not have the Word of God in his heart. Such a church would have no chance of success."
No chance at anything beyond material success. I know many, "By the grace of God we are Rich!" type pastors who preach a gospel that would be foreign to the living God and profit by it immensely. What they consider successful for a church, (packed pews ready to tithe), the Lord considers abhorrent. Why does God let these deceivers succeed? Because their success is a false one and will not last. They exist only as an example to the true believers of the trap that people with great wealth fall into. The trap of believing social success has anything to do with God's consent for the behavior that lead to it.
The same of course is true of the home. If you teach your children that success comes through education and a good paying job then watch as everything they work so hard to become is destroyed by the inevitable weight of time. Educations do not last. Careers do not last. What is important to God can not be achieved through putting our faith in the vain systems of man. What God wants for each of us cannot be found in our culture of false promises and false values.
Deny the culture that claims you. You are not an American. You are not Middle class. You are not working to support your family. You are a child of God. God is your family. We should work to support God and God alone with every second we have on this Earth. If we put our faith in God, God will provide everything we need. If we put our faith in our despicable culture, (that we've been taught from birth by society to love), we will always want for something and thus never be truly happy.
Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, but remember that everything in existence is God's, and so let the Lord guide thee. Money is a false care implanted by an evil society to distract us from completing God's mission. The false dreams of our children stem from a built in love of the power that money gives them to fulfill their false desires. They feel they have power over their feelings. They think they can augment those feelings with products and services that can be purchased with money. They think this will make them happy. Economic freedom will not bring us joy. The only freedom that exists is humble servitude to the Lord.
Only by loving each other as God has loved us, only by sacrificing our false dreams of social success for the dreams of Jesus, only by serving our fellow man with all the resources at our disposal in the ways Jesus served us, can we bring God's light into the world.
Do not save your money as if your faith will not save you. Save yourself by turning to God. Serve only God. If your child has a dream let that dream be to become a slave to our Creator and nothing more. God demands it. The alternative is death. If there is one message I could give to the children of the Earth it is this, "Serve God and only God and He will let you live. If not, the Lord will kill you in a way more painful than you can ever imagine and that death will last forever." The choice is clear and clearly defined by God many times over in our Holy Bible.
For our safety and our salvation and the safety and salvation of our children this issue must be taken seriously. Living in Christ is not a compliment to a life well lived by the present standards of society, living in Christ is the point of life itself. It isn't just another issue to be taken into consideration like what clothes should I wear tomorrow or whether I should risk asking the one I like to the dance, living to serve our Lord should be our only concern. The petty concerns of everyday life are no concern for a believer. Our only concern shall be what we can do for God.
The rest of society has their vanity and has their reward on Earth. Ours is the life of Jesus. The life that he called on each of us to live. A life of poverty of things but richness in spirit, constant servitude to and for our fellow man, always dealing with the bad intentions of nonbelievers without resorting to their vile tactics and the everlasting life that stems from our basic utility to God and His love. That is the life that God demands of us all. Anything else is a dangerous distraction that does not add anything to life. As much as we feel indulging in our culture brings us happiness, this is not the reality as God sees it. Our feelings lie. God never lies.
We must bear good fruit to be saved. May our children never step from the rocky path of righteousness.
