Snipitz - Of New Years Eve

Do you have a little streak about you that likes to tease people just a little?

Never mean or malicious but just like to make people laugh and have fun?

I am that way, I admit it now and I am seeking help for it€.well, ok, maybe not, but I am trying to do it less often.

Most of the time, the person I pick on the most is me. A little bit of self deprecating humor or poking fun at ones own flaws is a way of coping with them or making others feel good about their own flaws. I tend to do that. Especially if it is a situation where I am uncomfortable or if the silence has gone on way to long, or if we all just need a good laugh.

I think I learned how to do this at a very young age. My Grandfather loved to tease us. No one was immune from his wit, except my younger sister. Grandpa would tell me towards the end of his life how he loved to make us smile and laugh. He never wanted us to take ourselves too seriously. He would tease anyone, except Judy. He learned quickly that she was the one that you couldnt do that to.
The rest of us however were fair game.

I have taken that approach in life as well. I have a bit of a mischievous streak.

I am not above taking a co-workers can of Pepsi hostage.

Leaving notes in the store, ransom demands like€

€œ€leave a Snickers bar on the counter or the Pepsi gets opened.€

I have been known to take the shoe of a particular child of mine, put it in a boat, and float it out into the middle of the lake at church camp. 

I guess what I am saying is that when it is all said and done. I am a kid at heart.

In the mid 70s until the early 80s I would spend my New Years eve at the Roller Rink€.Magic Wheels or Skateland. I enjoyed being on my skates. I lived on them. I had one of my favorite portraits of me taken with them€.I know pathetic isnt it€LOL.

New years eve was one of my favorite nights on skates.

On this night for about 6 years I ushered in the New Year by trying to keep hundreds of kids and young adults moving and happy as we had our €œAll Night Skates.€ From 8pm until 8am the next morning the crew and I would keep them rolling around the rink floor, or buying things at the snack bar, playing foosball or shooting pool.

I can hear the sound of wheels on the floor, the cries of laughter, the thud of someone hitting the floor.

The sound I most wanted to hear on a new years eve or early new years day?

SNORING! Or at least the sound of someone sleeping€€

The one rule we had about our all night skates, NO sleeping.

Finding said sleeping person brought out the mischievous smile€..

And

A spray bottle filled with cold water.

As the offending victim lay sleeping amidst the chaos of sounds I would raise the squirt bottle from my hip, put the nozzle on spray and

PFFFT!!!

A direct hit! And out would come the desired affect a scream of shock and eventually a smile.

Oh did I neglect to mention that they were all forewarned about the consequences of sleeping?

Signs were posted everywhere that sleeping during an all night skate will result in the dreaded €œWater Shot€

No one was spared! No one could escape the Water Shot!!! Young or old, man or woman, Rink Owner ( yes I did) or employee.(insert maniacal laughter here)

With the exception, of course, of a pretty girl here or there. As I have stated before, I am not a complete fool. 

You might find this cruel but, you try babysitting a couple hundred kids all night long and see how long your sanity lasts.

We did this more though as an attention getter, and a way to have fun.

Sometimes I think God does this with me. We have all listened for the still small voice of God.

Most of the time when God wants to get my attention he needs to use a spray bottle of cold water on MY face. I am not saying that God likes to tease me but, he did invent humor and give us the ability to laugh and I am sure along with the tears I have caused Him to shed, he has thrown back His head in laughter at my antics as well.

He wants US to wake up! To get moving! To roll across the floor of life. We may feel old or worn down by life, But in the eyes of the eternal one we are in our youth. God wants us to use the gifts we have been given. These gifts include laughter and youth. We will never be too old to laugh, and we will never be too old to serve our heavenly father.

This is my challenge to you today and this New Year. Do NOT be afraid to let the little kid in you loose once in a while. Find a new way to serve God this year, or be the best at how you serve him now. Dont take your self or life so seriously. Let loose in uproarious laughter at yourself one and a while. Listen for that still small voice of God€..but dont be surprised if you get the spray bottle once in a while too.

The song today is €œStill Small Voice€ By Randy Stonehill.

I have heard a Still, Small Voice
That's whispering, "I Am, I Am, I Am"
Have you heard a Still, Small Voice
Whispering, "I can, I can, I can"
"If you'd only believe"
"If you'd only believe"
"If you'd only believe that there is love"

I have heard a Still, Small Voice
That's whispering, "tonight, tonight, tonight"
Oh oh oh oh
And if you hear that Still, Small Voice
Whispering, "It's right, oh it's right, it's right"
"If you'd only believe"
"If you'd only believe"
"If you'd only believe that there is love"

Oh you can tell Him all of your sorrows
Come and tell Him your dreams
Tell Him your dreams
He could give you your dreams

I have heard a Still, Small Voice
That's whispering "I am, I am, I am"
Oh oh and if you hear that Still, Small Voice
Whispering, "Oh, He can, yes He can, He can"
"If you'd only believe"
"Ooh only believe"
"If you'd only believe that there is love"
There is love, oh yeah, there is love
And it's waiting for you
