This is my commandment

This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. John 15:12

I get a daily bible verse every day in my email that I like to read and then ponder on. Today's verse is one of my all time favorites. Every time I read it lately I think back to the movie The Passion of Christ where Jesus is telling his disciples to love one another at the last supper.

The two most important words in this verse to me is first "commandment". This word stops me in my tracks every time. I have to tell myself, "Self, it is not a suggestion it is a command. As I study God's word I don't find a lot of commandments and especially not from Jesus Himself. So the importance of what is being said is tremendous and not taken lightly.

The second most important word is love. I have loved someone before. I know what He is talking about. John 15:13 says, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends". Jesus showed His love toward us when He went to the cross and took our place, our punishment for our sins. He left us an example of real love.

I guess we could debate until the end of time who is "one another" but in most cases we are just looking for someone not to love. For sure we should love our Christian family. I admit that I have found some who have been hard to love at times. That is where the commandment comes in. All of us who truly want to please God will remember it is a commandment.

I believe the great Day of our Lord is approaching and our time on Earth as we know it is short. Let us love one another passionately and expect nothing in return. Love without being love back. Let the ones left behind carve in our tombstone, "He loved people with all his heart".

You're right. A command is not a suggestion, it is not optional. It is something we must do.

Hmm I think there are some people or persons whom I would not choose to love, that is why its good that this is a Command. Cause I think I would ignore it otherwise at times.

Yes indeed there are those that are hard to love - but as you so clearly pointed out - it is a commandment not a request or a suggestion.

Does it still count if you love the "unloveables" from afar? There are some I am struggling to "love" and almost actively avoid since they trigger a very "non loving" reaction...Why? Because THEY are unloving to me. To avoid hurt, I just try to limit my exposure. Good point though..expect nothing in return. That is where unconditional comes in and it is such an alien thought for humanity. Good blog...good reminder. God doesn't give us an option to love when it is easy. We think of it as who we need to love...wonder if there are people out there struggling to love US but do so because they are commanded to? hehe. We can also reap from this commandment!
