A Chance Meeting

I started to grab a grocery cart this afternoon. I only had a few items to grab and and knew I would be in and out in just a few minutes. Just as I started to grab a cart, I felt impressed to head for the restrooms. Huh? I didn't need... well... I guess it wouldn't hurt to head there before I started shopping. I mean, who knows? I might be at the store longer than I thought so okay. That might be a good idea.

Later, as I was exiting the restroom area in order to commence with my shopping, another woman and a little girl attempted to go through the doorway at the same time as me. We both stopped to let the other one pass through and then let out an exclamation because we knew each other. The woman is a friend of mine from church.

After expressing our surprise and pleasure at meeting one another (and introducing me to her five year old granddaughter), my friend suddenly looked very sad. Earlier that day, her sixteen year old grandson had been arrested and her granddaughter had witnessed it. The girl had already been dealing with one trauma in her family that had happened last month and now this had happened.

I put my arm around my friend and said a short prayer for her grandchildren as well as herself and the rest of her family.

"Thank you," she whispered as tears filled her eyes. "Thank you for your prayer."

While some people may say our meeting was merely a coincidence, I do not believe that. I live in a town of more than 50,000 people which adjoins towns of similar size. I had been out and about all day and had actually bought groceries the day before. The only reason I had stopped by the store was because I'd gotten an alert on my phone about a "Three Day Sale" today and I saw a couple of items on sale that I had decided to pick up. I had, however, decided that rather than go today, I would go tomorrow as I was tired and had wanted to simply go home. Instead of heading straight home, however, I suddenly found myself abruptly making a turn and heading for the grocery store instead. Then my "plan" got interrupted once again causing me to be in the right place at the right moment for my friend. Hmm...

After leaving my friend, I was reminded of these words:

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Psalm 37:23 (NLT)

I entitled this blog "A Chance Meeting" but I am reminded that there is no such thing as chance when God directs our steps. I am also reminded that when you feel those little prompts, we need to follow them no matter how small or insignificant they may seem at the time. Allow your plans, your agenda to be interrupted by God.
