And They Will Become One Flesh

Today, August 22, 2010 is my 29th wedding anniversary. With each passing year, I am more acutely aware that my husband and I are becoming somewhat of an anomaly. Married at 20 (the day before his 21st birthday) just prior to starting our senior year of college, the odds of still being happily married 29 years later were not in our favor. However, with God's help... we are still at each other's side, 29 years later.

Last December my son had the opportunity to get a glimpse of what "one flesh" really means as I battled for my life. A few weeks later, he talked with me about those minutes and hours when my life was held in the balance as doctors tried to figure out exactly what had happened to me.

"Mom, I've never seen Dad like that. It was like... like he was almost torn in two." I wasn't the least bit surprised at that for I know that if things would have been reversed I would have experienced the exact same thing. In some amazing way, God has bound the two of us together... and we are indeed, "one flesh".

As I sit here thinking back over the years, I can only say that God has been loving, faithful and true. While we may not have faced some of the battles other couples have, we have indeed had our own battles to fight.

Over the years we have learned to take things to God in prayer, trusting Him for our provision, comfort and strength rather than ourselves. We have learned how to lift the other one up when they are weak and weary. If we both are down; well, we have learned to clasp each other tightly by the hand as we both clasp God's hand.

Loving me when I am unlovable, loving me in spite of myself, my husband has been my greatest teacher of God's amazing love. If this man can love me through all my ups and downs and everything in between, how much more so does God love me?

Having seen firsthand the strength of your marriage and how the two of you are so close, all I can say is HAPPY ANNIVERSARY and if the Lord tarries I pray you have 29 more years (at least) of being even more one flesh and of one mind. Congratulations and enjoy your special day along with your husband's birthday.
Blessings 2 you both!

Ditto the comments that B2Y and Silverpen made! I pray that the two of you will continue to stand as an example of what a Christian marriage is all about. We have much to learn from you.
