But, are you ready to grow?

We probably will all agree that it is important for Christians to grow. If a child doesn't grow there is a lot of concern. Failure to thrive is not a something we want written about us. No, we don't want to be simply surviving, we want to be thriving but are we ready to grow?

At my school we have adopted something called the Body Check. It is a classroom management tool designed to help children think about what they're doing or not doing in relationship to being prepared to learn.

When we introduce Body Check, we talk about the things we do to get ready for school. How do we prepare to go to school. What do we need to check for before we leave... because we want to be ready you know. Once we're at school, what do we need to do in order to be prepared to learn. Well, in second grade, we do the Body Check.

As I was teaching this today, I suddenly thought about how this relates to our Christian life. Bear with me for a moment...

We do a little song about the body check and then we run through our checklist. There are only four items to check off so it is very simple.

  1. Your voice is at rest.
  2. Your body is placido.
  3. Your eyes are on the speaker.
  4. You're ready to learn.

Okay, so what does this have to do with Christian growth. Well, if we're going to grow, there is preparation we must do. This really does apply to us spiritually. Now let's see...

My voice is at rest
Is my voice really at rest or am I doing all of the talking? No, God does mind hearing us talk but my guess is we do far more talking than listening.

Your body is placido
Is my body in constant motion, rushing here and there? Or am I talking time to stop and rest in Him. I need to be still and listen for His voice.

Your eyes are on the speaker
This is a bigger for me. Are my eyes on God or are they listening to everything new which hits town. Our eyes need to be on God!

You're ready to learn

When I quit doing the talking and listening instead, when I quiet myself before the Lord and when I stop to rest in him and when He has my undivided attention. Amazing things will happen and I will be amazed at what God will do!

If you want to grow, you have to prepare for it!

Wonderful thoughts here K. We do need to prepare ourselves to grow. If we don't, how will we be ready?
