Count Your Blessings!

Count your blessings, name them one by one, Count your blessings, see what God hath done! Count your blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Although she has been gone for nearly six years, I can hear the voice of my grandmother singing this song which she loved so well. As the Great Depression was coming to a close and the U.S. was on the brink of war, my grandparents lost the farm which her grandfather had purchased and worked when he came to the U.S. 70 years earlier. The family of 10 squeezed into a dilapidated house which was far too small for them on the wrong side of the tracks. My grandma tireless worked in her garden and prayed as she struggled to feed her growing family.

She lost her eldest son to a cerebral hemorrhage when he was 23 years old. Her husband abandoned her. She was to lose two more children and three grandchildren before she passed away and did not have a home of her own for 40 years. She lived/visited with other family members. Yet she would sing:

When upon life s billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey s end.

Over the past eight months, it has sometimes been quite a struggle to do this. I think it is for us to thinking about what God has not done. That's according to our way of thinking of course and what do we know?

So what are some of my blessings? Well, let's see. First and foremost, God loves me in spite of myself. He loves me so much that Christ died for me and I am no longer in bondage to sin but I am a new creation in Christ! That is more than enough but God didn't stop there. Oh no, He has blessed me with so much more. I am married to a wonderful man who loves God (and me, LOL). My only child and his wife love and serve God.
Despite serious, life threatening illnesses over the past three years, God has faithfully brought me through them. He has given me a loving family and some very precious friends. I am not hungry, I am not out in the rain. I am not too hot, too cold or in pain. In a few moments I am going to curl up in a safe and comfortable spot. Despite my financial crisis, God has faithfully provided what I need, when I need it.

This is just a few of the blessings God has given me. You know, when I count these blessings, the problems of this world don't seem nearly as big and more. This is what happens when we count them. So... find a cozy spot, pull out your blessings and count them. When you do so, you will be amazed at what God has done.

Blessings!
