Sitting here in the semi-darkness, I can almost hear the voice of my grandmother singing:
When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed; When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
Count your blessings name them one by one,
Count your blessings see what God hath done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your many blessings see what God hath done.
She definitely put this into practice. She followed started following Jesus as a teenager back in 1924 and followed Him faithfully until her death in 2005 at the age of 96. She raised eight children during the Great Depression and was married to a man who battled alcoholism. She had to leave the fine farm and large beautiful home which had been in the family for 70 years and moved into a tiny rat-infested house at the edge of a small town. How she struggled to try to provide food for her children! She spent the days praying as she cared for her family.
When you look at others with their lands and gold, Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold. Count your many blessings; money cannot buy Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
Her eldest child became a Christian at age 16 and eventually went into the ministry as an evangelist. One day, at the age of 23, he climbed into a small plane (he was a pilot) and prepared to take off on another mission trip. He suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage and died out on the runway. Her marriage did not survive this tragedy. Grandma didn't understand the whys but she understood that God was God and she would trust Him no matter what...
Are you ever burdened with load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings; ev'ry doubt will fly And you will be singing as the days go by.
Throughout my childhood and nearly all of my adult life (I was nearly 45 at the time of her death) she taught me by both words and actions joy is not dependent upon my circumstances. It is dependent upon my relationship with Jesus Christ! This was a critical lesson for me to remember as I battled breast cancer.
So amid the conflict, whether great or small, Do not be conflict, God is over all. Count your many blessings, angels will attend, Help and comfort give you to your journey's end.
May we learn to take our eyes off of our circumstances and fix our eyes upon our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! The more we look upon Him, the more we become aware of the multitude of blessings which He bestows upon us daily. When you consider those things, you cannot help but feel the love of God and the joy of the Lord in your life! With that comes that wonderful peace that passeth all understanding. This is how we must learn to live!
