Today I picked up a very special pair of shoes. While they might appear to fit someone else they will not fit anyone else the way they fit me. You see, they were designed just for me using molds made from my own feet. This is very important to me because due to chemotherapy in 2008, I developed chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in both feet and in my left hand. Three months after I finished chemotherapy, I developed diabetes. Since peripheral neuropathy can also be a very serious side-effect of type 2 diabetes which can lead to crippling or even the loss of limbs, they keep a pretty close eye on my feet.
In early July, I got this sense that something wasn't quite right. It was hard to say what was wrong because, well, my sense of feeling in the bottom of my feet is somewhat limited. It wasn't until things got so bad that I was actually feeling pain that I became aware that there was a problem.
X-rays just after the 4th of July at a clinic. Nothing showed up so that doctor (not my regular doctor), suggested that I had perhaps just strained something and would be fine in a few days. He was wrong.
A few weeks later, in desperation, I called my primary clinic and was scheduled to see a different doctor that day. This time, unlike the other doctor, when he heard the words chemo, neuropathy and diabetes all used in the same sentence, a red flag started waving and he promptly examined my foot very carefully before coming to the conclusion that I needed to be fitted for custom orthopedic shoes.
Last week I was seen and it was determined that this wasn't simple foot strain. My conditions had affected my left foot and in order to help and protect it, I needed to
Hey friend- Good to hear you have the shoes you need!
