"For the LORD your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you." Deuteronomy 20:4 (NKJV)
When you think about it, the world in which we live is really a dark and dangerous place. The reality of this is very clear to millions of people who live in areas ravaged by war and terrorism or are fighting to survive in refugee camps. Even those of us who live in relative safety aren't really "safe". Without warning, any time, any place, the well-ordered world we have built for ourselves could erupt into utter chaos. Apart from God, we are not "safe".
Even as Christians, we still live in a dangerous, sinful world and therefore we will be confronted with sorrow and suffering just like the person next to us. We are not exempt.
When the Israelites left Canaan, they still have to travel across the scorched and barren desert. The merciless hot sun was still overhead and it was still a dry and thirsty land. There were still dangers to face and enemies to conquer. However, God went before them.
The desert was unable to sustain that many people and yet they survived there for not just a few days but for forty long years. The presence of God covered them by day and gave them light, warmth and protection in the darkest of nights. God made the bitter waters sweet, caused water to flow where there had been none and fed them with the bread of Heaven. They had not been soldiers, they had been slaves and yet they were victorious against their enemies because God went before them.
The impossible becomes the possible when God goes before us but He is not merely in front of us, He is with us.
