And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
While the Bible only records the death of James the brother of John, tradition says that all of the other apostles, except John, suffered a martyr s death. The words of Jesus quoted in the eighth chapter of Mark were not just pretty words to be spoken on a Sunday morning. These men came to understand that there was a price to be paid for following Christ and they were willing to pay it with their lives.
I wonder what their reaction would be if they were amongst us now? Would they ask us if we'd be willing to obey God and follow Jesus wherever He would lead us, even at the risk of physical discomfort and perhaps even out lives? They did. Would they ask us if we are willing to do the same for the sake of the Gospel? Are we?
