For nearly a week, they tell me I was only able to respond to questions by saying yes or no. I could not initiate conversation. I know this is consistent with someone who has suffered from a stroke. Trapped in your own body and fighting for your life, you go into survival mode and higher level thinking skills, that which differentiates the human brain from that of a mere animal, take a back seat. You are fighting a battle for your life.
As I fought this battle of reconnecting myself with the world around me (God obviously wasn't ready for me to come home yet), I felt like an oxygen-starved swimmer trying to break the surface of the water. Then I heard it. Carolers were passing my door. Were they going to stop and see me? No! I was in ICU and they were not going to stop for those presumed to be unable to hear/respond.
I screamed out in desperation and they heard my cry. "Please, can you sing Joy To The World!"
They came into the room and found me sitting in bed crying. "Please," I sobbed. "Please sing Joy To The World". They smiled at me and I smiled back through my tears. "Of course".
To their amazement, as they burst into song, I joined in providing the alto part. Tears of joy filled their eyes as well as mine. Oh, how we sang!
Joy to the World! He came. He saw. He conquered sin, death and hell. He is the Joy-Bringer and Life-Giver! God breathed upon me as I sang and His glory filled that darkened hospital room. God broke into that room and penetrated the darkness! I am sobbing now as I recall His glory in that place!
He has come and we no longer need to be bound in darkness. Regardless of your circumstances, regardless of your weaknesses, regardless of where you are, The LORD has come and He heals the broken-hearted, sets the captive free and we NEVER need to be in darkness and bondage again...for God turns our darkness into light!
