Laying It Down For The Joy Of The Lord

One of my favorite passages of scripture is found in 2 Corinthians 4. Oh how God has proved that time and time again in my life!

We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.

Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies. So we live in the face of death, but this has resulted in eternal life for you. 2 Corinthians 4:7-12(NLT)

Don't we see? Oh, it does not matter what happens to our physical bodies. It does not matter what we go through psychologically or emotionally. NOTHING can crush our soul, we are NOT abandoned by God and though we may be knocked down, we cannot be destroyed for Christ dwells within us! This is the power of God in our lives!

Over the past two years I have faced breast cancer and most recently on the evening of December 10th I suffered a brain aneurysm which resulted in a stroke. Where was God? Where He has ALWAYS been... right beside me every step of the way. Some of you were here at CB when I faced cancer and you watched God lead me through treatment. Many more of you prayed in the days following my stroke. You have watched me, talked with me and know that I am not just saying pretty words when I say that God is bigger and that He makes my darkness light. I am not just repeating sweet words when I say that the joy of the Lord is my strength. You KNOW that I believe those words with my whole heart for you have walked with me and know that they are a reality.

It is my prayer that in 2010 these words will not become merely words but reality for all of us. May we remember them as well as these closing words:

That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18 So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NLT)

May we not live as defeated slaves but rather as children of the King, keeping our eyes steadfastly upon Him and on Him alone. Where He leads I want to follow...what about you?
