Human beings love to strike up deals. It's in our nature. You don't think so? I challenge you to spend some time watching a group of children very closely. Spy on them for awhile and I can guarantee you will see deals being struck. "If you do this, I'll do that. If you give me this, I'll give you that." Think back to your own childhood, remember? On second thought, you may not have to look back quite as far as that, LOL!
This desire to "strike up a deal" is so instinctive to us that we even attempt to do the same thing with God. We promise God that we will pay tithes and/or offerings... if He gives us a better job. We promise God that we will serve Him forever... if He takes care of some problem we have. We promise to start a ministry... if God heals us. The list goes on and on.
You say you've never done this? Oh, I am so glad to hear that because I am afraid that I have!
It is an easy trap to fall into. We are used to making deals with family, friends, co-workers and even strangers. If we are not careful, we will even discover we are trying to make deals with God, Himself. We promise things to God with strings attached. We will do those things only if God comes through for us. What are we thinking? Do we realize who we are addressing?
God has told us what we must do to be saved. God has told us what He expects from us. Following Christ is not "Let's Make A Deal", we can't pick and choose what we like and throw away what we don't like. God's Way is non-negotiable.
