God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1 (NIV)
This morning, I turned to Psalm 46 and was reminded that not only is God our refuge and strength, He is our ever-present help. When God's Word tells us that He is our ever-present help, it means exactly that. There is no hidden meaning that we have to try to figure out nor is it a metaphor. God is not like an ever-present help. God is an ever-present help. It is as simple as that and we need to stop making things more complicated than what they are. God is our refuge. God is our strength and God is our ever-present help. Its as simple as that.
When I was a girl, I remember that there were times that I would cry out to my father when I needed help or when I was afraid. He always responded immediately. Why? Because I was his daughter. I had the utmost confidence that all would be well when he was beside me. How I loved to be snuggled up against him, tucked safely within his arms. I was safe and secure and as far as I was concerned, nothing could harm me.
Oh that we might feel that way about our Heavenly Father but far too often we worry instead. We worry that God might not respond to our cry. We worry that He might tell us to toughen up and stop bothering Him with our silly little concerns and fears. We worry that He has more important things to do and can't be troubled with our little cares, after all He does have all of creation to tend to. We need to stop worrying, start listening to what God says, and take Him at His Word. When we do, we too will be able to say:
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

"This morning, I turned to Psalm 46..."
Oh! Oh! Me too! (Well, I believe it was technically morning... )
"We worry that He might tell us to toughen up and stop bothering Him with our silly little concerns and fears. "
Yes we do, don't we? Isn't it stupid! Something my son and I were discussing a couple of hours before my reading of Psalm 46. This is all really weird.
I sort of think the bottom line is that God-who-sees-me ... well, he can see those big problems for what they really are, he sees how worried or fearful we are ... even when other people do not. Oh, Lord ... thank you.
"We need to stop worrying, start listening to what God says, and take Him at His Word. "
Yes indeed! Therefore, we will not fear. Amen to all this.
