No, Never Alone

When in affliction's valley I tread the road of care,
My Savior helps me carry the cross so heavy to bear;
Though all around me is darkness, earthly joys all flown;
My Savior whispers His promise, never to leave me alone.

No, never alone, no never alone,
He promised never to leave me,
never to leave me alone.

No, never alone, no never alone.
He promised never to leave me,
never to leave me alone.

The words from this hymn rang through my head earlier this evening when I was alone, completely alone for the first time since having my stroke. I had urged my husband to go off and take a break with our son. He has so tirelessly been beside me through this ordeal just like he was when I was in cancer treatment, just like he always has been these 28 years. However, I also realize it is important for him to get a break.

After he left, Fear walked into the room and sat down beside me. He brought some company along with him... the What If's. Oh they are a noisy bunch aren't they! Although I was very tired, they all kept making such a racket!

"What if you have another stroke? There is no one here to help you this time!"
"The last stroke happened in your sleep. You were lucky you got sick and it awakened your husband. Who will help you this time?"

As I found myself fighting against sleep the arguments grew bolder and louder.

"You know, most strokes occur when people are awake. You could have one this second. Yes, I know you have titanium in your head and I know the neurologist said there aren't anymore aneurysm but you know, people make mistakes! God? Well yes, He may have delivered you the first time but perhaps this time... "

WHOOSH!!!!!!!!!!!! The Holy Spirit came to my rescue! Don't you just love it when He comes in and shuts the lions mouths? I do!

He reminded me that I am never alone for He is always with me and He directs my path. The God who was with me when I had my stroke is the same God who was with me now. As a child of God it is impossible for me to be alone.

As I felt His peace descend upon me, I realized that my enemies had fled. I curled up and slept peacefully for a couple of hours confident that He was keeping watch over me and regardless of what happened, I was in His hands... no matter what!

Oh it is good to know that we are never ever alone!
