What About My Guarantee?
A woman sat still in disbelief. This couldn't be happening again! She had taken all of the precautions 20 years ago. She had been assured that if she had the surgery she would never have to deal with this again. Those who had told her that were wrong. Cancer had come back again twenty years later. The fact that it was growing right under her mastectomy scar didn't escape her. She had just come face to face with a bitter truth. There are no 100% guarantees aside from God.
I wish this story was fiction. Unfortunately it is not. I'd been following a discussion about cancer recurrence on another board over the past few days when I learned about this incident. Several women who thought they were safe were a bit shaken as they heard from more and more women who had recurrences even though they had bilateral mastectomies. They were learning that there are no 100% guarantees aside from God.
The possibility of recurrence is usually lurking somewhere in the back of the mind of cancer survivors. Every ache and pain is scrutinized. I've heard it fades with time but will suddenly swoop in on you when it is least expected.
True Or False?
As I contemplated my own situation, I began to think about precautions people take as a whole. Can we truthfully say something is 100% guaranteed. I'm not talking about purchasing something, it doesn't work and you get your money back. You may have gotten your money back but the fact remains that the item which was supposed to work failed to perform as promised and failed to meet your expectations. A replacement item may work but this particular one did not. Therefore the premise that item X will always perform as promised is false.
Consider the following premise:
If you look both ways before crossing the street you will never be hit by a car.
Is this a true statement or a false statement? While looking both ways before you cross the the street certainly reduces the probability of your being hit by a car, it does not eliminate your chances by 100%. We were once behind a car at a red light. We were facing west. The driver in a car heading north decided things were moving too slow (he was high at the time). So, he accelerated and passed the car in front of him on the right. Other than that being illegal, he was also on a two lane street with no shoulder. He didn't clear the other vehicle and his car was suddenly heading northeast, right into our car. There are no 100% guarantees except for...
I am so thankful that there is something or rather someone who is 100% guaranteed. Everything he says or does is 100% guaranteed. There are no exceptions. Peter writes:
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3-5 (NKJV)
23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, 24 because
" All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass.
The grass withers, and its flower falls away,
25 But the word of the LORD endures forever."
Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.
1 Peter 1: 23-25 (NKJV)
We are guaranteed God's love and mercy. If we confess our sins, repent and turn our lives over to Jesus, we are guaranteed a living hope; an inheritance which can never be destroyed. Other things will pass away but what God says will never fade away.
We can place all of our hope in Jesus Christ. We can believe everything God has said in his Word. We can be confident that he loves us and pursues us relentlessly and that no man can pluck us from his hand. God is 100% guaranteed!
