Search Me O God

Earlier today, I was reminded of a lovely hymn entitled "Cleanse Me" by J. Edwin Orr. The lyrics are:

Search me, O God, And know my heart today; Try me, O Savior, Know my thoughts, I pray. See if there be Some wicked way in me; Cleanse me from every sin And set me free.

I praise Thee, Lord,
For cleansing me from sin;
Fulfill Thy Word,
And make me pure within.
Fill me with fire
Where once I burned with shame;
Grant my desire
To magnify Thy Name.

Lord, take my life,
And make it wholly Thine;
Fill my poor heart
With Thy great love divine.
Take all my will,
My passion, self and pride;
I now surrender, Lord
In me abide.

O Holy Ghost,
Revival comes from Thee;
Send a revival,
Start the work in me.
Thy Word declares
Thou wilt supply our need;
For blessings now,
O Lord, I humbly plead.

This song was inspired by a passage in Psalm 129:

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. - Psalm 129:23-24

Is this the cry of our heart? Is this really what we want God to do? Are we willing to lay our heart before God and as He shines His light upon it, do we dare to peer into every nook and cranny?

I believe that if we are honest, we realize there are some areas which need some cleansing by the Holy Spirit.

It isn't pretty when we are confronted with those dingy, dusty corners. However, ignoring them or denying that they are there will not get rid of them. It will only make them worse. The only solution is to acknowledge them and follow the Holy Spirit as He sheds light upon each area in our lives which needs to be cleansed and disinfected by the Blood of Jesus Christ and the Word of God.
