The 27th Bag

I went to the second Saturday night service held at my church this evening. During the sermon a story was shared about a recent incident. Our church has several locations and a short time ago, some ladies at one of the campuses decided to make some gift bags for the wives of some missionaries which coud be delivered by some members of their congregation who were going to be traveling to the area.

I can imagine the fun they had as they selected the items and gathered together to assemble the bags. It is truly a blessing to be able to give to those who freely give so much of themselves expecting nothing in return.

Everything went fine until after they completed bag number 26. Uh-oh. They had miscalculated. They only had enough for 26 bags and they needed 27.

Fortunately, one of the ladies came to the rescue. She remembered that she uh... had a bag of candy in her purse. She would donate that to "the cause". Now if you are reading this and you are a man, that might not seem like that big of a deal to you. However, we women know that it is a major sacrifice to take candy out of your purse and send it half-way around the world, particularly if it is... chocolate!

The bags were collected and delivered to the women who were delighted with their gifts of love. There was one woman though who upon opening her bag, began to cry. You see, with the holiday season coming up, this woman had become very homesick. She knew she was doing the work God had called her to do and she would not turn her back on that but at the moment, she missed her family terribly.

This woman had received the 27th bag. The contents of her bag were different from the others but that was okay because you see her bag was filled with the very same candy she had loved since she was a little girl. It was her favorite and as soon as she realized that her bag was different than all of the rest, she realized God had just given her a very special gift of love and she was moved to tears. Life might be difficult at times and she might be homesick at times but tonight she received a lovely little reminder that God loved and cared about her.

Now some people might say that 27th bag was a mistake. Someone had messed up and not calculated things properly. I don't think it was a "mistake". I think it was simply a matter of God giving that woman what she needed when she needed it.

At the moment, I am staring at the "bag" God has given me. I look around the room and my bag doesn't seem quite like the other ones. It seems sort of plain and looks a bit beat up. All around me, people are exclaming over the contents of their beautiful bags. I look at my bag again and am almost afraid to look inside.

Then I remember that this bag, though different from others, was given to me by God, Himself. It may look different but it is not a mistake. God gives me what I need when I need it so, I carefully open the bag and slip my hand inside...

Blessings!

P.S. Amazing things happen if we dare to open Bag 27.
