God, the Lord God Almighty, ruler of heaven and earth, creator of all things, all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present, the one and only glorious God who is above all others is mindful of...us. This idea always completely blows me away. My mind cannot fully grasp this idea. It is to big. We get a glimpse of it but I don't think we will ever fully understand the magnitude of this until we are with Him!
Today I read a Sumerian creation myth. It seems that at the beginning of creation, the lessor gods had to do the grunt work for the greater gods. They had to do things like dig irrigation canals and be the hunters and gatherers for the more powerful gods. Finally, they rebel against the high god, Enki. The mother goddess, Nammu suggests that Enki forms a creature who could take over the work of the lesser gods, thus pacifying them. Enki agrees. He designs the form of humanity and has Nammu create a man and woman using a pinch of clay. In other words, humanity was created to be the slaves of the gods. The Bible contradicts this idea.
Instead, humanity is "God's masterpiece". I think in theatrical terms so I'll put it this way. The set was built according to certain specifications. The stage was set and everything was put into its proper place. The creator/director pronounced that everything was perfect. Now he could place the actors on stage.
We were not created to be the slaves some indifferent god. We were created to live as princes and princesses of God! Humanity, in the pre-fallen state was crowed with glory and honor. Man was set as ruler over all of the earth!
When we fell to the enemy, we began to live as prisoners and slaves in an occupied land. God did not wish us to remain as prisoners and slaves. He could have turned his back on us and told us we had our chance...we should have listened to him. Instead, God loved us so much that he came and dwelt among us. He made the ultimate sacrifice, He gave himself that we might live!
Is this not the greatest news of all? I can hardly contain myself when I think about this! There, I've had a moment of celebration! Truly we can say: O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Psalm 8:1 (NIV)
May we truly come to understand the love God has for us and allow him to make us into who he desires us to be; princes and princesses after God's own heart! Once we become a child of God, help us not to live as prisoners and slaves to the prince of this world rather let us live as princes and princesses of God and help us to let the world around us know they too can be set free from the bondage of sin!
