Spring comes slowly up here in the upper midwest. Some of you have written about warming temperatures and things starting to grow. I've enjoyed that because I'm still looking at snow and ice. It reminds me that spring is somewhere, even if it is not in my own backyard! We haven't broken much above freezing this season but since March began, there are some indicators that spring is on its way.
Although high temperatures have only been in the teens and low twenties, the snow is starting to succumb to the strong March sun. I am starting to see some areas along the highways and under trees where some brown grass is showing. This is not occurring in my yard of course, but there are some patches starting show where the sun really beats down. I also actually heard some birds yesterday. It has been a long time.
There's a rumor going around about today. We may actually break 40 degrees! We've been told several times this was going to happen but it never did. I think this time it will happen. Why? Because I am seeing some evidence. Right now, at 8:42 CDT, the temperature is standing stead at 32 degrees (F). Although there are still high clouds, as I look out the window, they appear to be thinning and I am starting to see some shadows. If I look at the calendar, I know the time is right for this to happen. The sun is climbing higher above the horizon each day and the number of daylight hours are lengthening. Spring is not here yet, but I can see the signs of it coming.
Jesus tells us there will be signs of his coming as well.3 Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives. His disciples came to him privately and said, "Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will signal your return and the end of the world?"
4 Jesus told them, "Don't let anyone mislead you,
5 for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.' They will deceive many.
6 And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don't panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won't follow immediately.
7 Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world.
8 But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come.
9 "Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers.
10 And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other.
11 And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people.
12 Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold.
13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
14 And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nationswill hear it; and then the end will come.
Matthew 24:3-14 (NLT)
We need to pay attention to the signs. Winter will not last for ever. There is the promise of spring. Are you ready for it? Are you waiting and laboring with anticipation of His coming?
Spring is in the air, the birds were singing this morning. How wonderful to hear them again! The sun is shining and my daffodils are picking through the cold earth.
:coffee: drinking tea and longing for the warmth of spring
It got up to 50 today! I saw a bit of grass on the very edge of my yard and the snow is now off my deck but other than that my yard is tucked under it's blanket of snow. We're supposed to get some snow on Wednesday but they said it might turn to rain instead if we can just keep this warm air. It's going to dip below freezing all week but the highs are supposed to get up above freezing for the next four or five days.
Daffodils sound wonderful. I may get impatient and just go out and buy some daffodils and tulips to at least look at! As I said, we're a bit slow in Minnesota. Others may be further north in the U.S. but it's like we're at the end of an arctic tunnel or something. :)The jet stream is fond of forming a dip around us with us on the north side of it rather than the south side.
I just love the promise of spring! I've already mentioned the plum tree outside my window with pretty little pink flowers, and my daffodils are up and the forsythia are beginning to bloom. The maple trees are beginning to put out their red buds and so they look like hazy pinkish-red clouds.
Yes, the Lord is coming and we need to recognize the signs as plainly and as surely as we know that spring is just around the corner.
Thanks for making me smile!
I love spring!!! Those first few days when the snow melts and I can go outside without a coat are really wonderful...they make me feel so alive. I feel like it's been winter forever. Here in PA we've had more snow that we have had for a few years, so it's great that it's finally melting, the birds are singing, and the grass is finally visible! Now I'm just waiting for the flowers :)
