A number of years ago, one of my students shyly slipped a little card into my hand right before Christmas. I opened it up and learned that her parents had purchased a "gift of a llama" through Heifer International in honor of 6 people. I was one of the people. Needless to say, I was intrigued to learn that this lama would provide wool which could be sold or made into items which could be sold, thus improving the income and nutrition for a family. Some of the offspring of this lama would go to help other families. It is sort of a gift which keeps on giving.
Since that time, my husband and I have given gifts similar to this in honor of various family members/friends. Not everyone appreciates gifts such as this but over the years we have given donations to various organizations around the world in honor of people we love.
Last week, I informed a friend that my husband and I were giving a gift in honor of them on their spouse to an organization which was near and dear to their heart. My husband and I were also going to give a donation of our own to that organization as well. I am always a little bit nervous when I do this the first time. Not everyone embraces it and I suppose some people view it as "cheap" although I don't get why. I had no reason to fear, however. Their response overwhelmed me. I was told me it was the bestest Christmas present we could possibly give them.
As the Christmas season comes upon us, take a moment to consider giving to those in need. Don't just do it in your name, consider doing it in the name of someone you love and remember that whatever we do in love, is done unto Jesus as well.
