The announcement came over the intercom system just as the first buses were preparing to pull up to school. Effective immediately, we were under yellow alert. Students would be coming in a few minutes. We were all supposed to lock our classroom doors and no passes were to be given out for any reason until further notice. I wish I could say this was the first time this had happened. Unfortunately it is not.
Since the Columbine High School Massacre, the schools in the US have become very different places than what most of us remember. In my school district, you are given a second badge along with your ID badge. It contains emergency information in regards to instructions the three alert system we now use... green, yellow and red. I have fortunately never been involved in a red alert but I have been in yellow alerts since the system was implemented four years ago.
The yellow alert occurred yesterday when threats of an attack against an unknown school within our district were made. Due to the nature of this threat and reports that this threat had also shown up online in various places, the police were taking it seriously. We went into yellow alert immediately.
All outside doors were locked. All classroom doors were locked. Students were not permitted to leave the classroom for any reason unless accompanied by an adult. Recess was canceled. We were to be aware of our surroundings at all times and if there was anyone in the school without proper identification, we were to report it immediately. In short, we were on watch. Thankfully nothing occurred but I cannot help but wonder if that would have been the case if schools would have ignored the warning.
Too often as Christians, we forget that we are on "alert" in this world. I Peter 5:8 (NLT) tells us to Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. As we do life together with God and one another in this world we must never forget that we are in a battle!
Rather sobering, isn't it? Whether it's our schools, airlines or attending a large function we are all ever on "yellow alert." Much of the region where I live was brought to a standstill yesterday when we had the blessing of a Presidential visit.
Everywhere we turn we are being watched by video cameras. Yes, our world has changed.
The ONE thing that has not changed is God!
THANK GOD for that!
Good message, I am reminded of what Jesus told us his disciples in Matthew 10:16
"Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
In todays ever increasing world of danger and evil, we must truly pay head the words of our Lord and be sure to raise our children to do the same.
I guess I should add that although they think they have located where the threats have come from... it is not local or even in the US (they think), they still put us on yellow alert today as well. :(
This is just an example of what students and their teachers face in today's world.
